Posted 1/12/10
People need to be careful with their thoughts and learn to be grateful for what they have in reality.

After seeing Avatar, fans have become so depressed that they cannot live in the fictional word of Pandora that they are contemplating suicide. A forum opened up for like-minded individuals of this topic and received over 1,000 replies. These are people who are depressed that the Earth sucks, but aren't doing anything to make it better but whine on the internet.

(CNN) -- James Cameron's completely immersive spectacle "Avatar" may have been a little too real for some fans who say they have experienced depression and suicidal thoughts after seeing the film because they long to enjoy the beauty of the alien world Pandora.

On the fan forum site "Avatar Forums," a topic thread entitled "Ways to cope with the depression of the dream of Pandora being intangible," has received more than 1,000 posts from people experiencing depression and fans trying to help them cope. The topic became so popular last month that forum administrator Philippe Baghdassarian had to create a second thread so people could continue to post their confused feelings about the movie.

"I wasn't depressed myself. In fact the movie made me happy ," Baghdassarian said. "But I can understand why it made people depressed. The movie was so beautiful and it showed something we don't have here on Earth. I think people saw we could be living in a completely different world and that caused them to be depressed."

A post by a user called Elequin expresses an almost obsessive relationship with the film.

"That's all I have been doing as of late, searching the Internet for more info about 'Avatar.' I guess that helps. It's so hard I can't force myself to think that it's just a movie, and to get over it, that living like the Na'vi will never happen. I think I need a rebound movie," Elequin posted.

A user named Mike wrote on the fan Web site "Naviblue" that he contemplated suicide after seeing the movie.

"Ever since I went to see 'Avatar' I have been depressed. Watching the wonderful world of Pandora and all the Na'vi made me want to be one of them. I can't stop thinking about all the things that happened in the film and all of the tears and shivers I got from it," Mike posted. "I even contemplate suicide thinking that if I do it I will be rebirthed in a world similar to Pandora and the everything is the same as in 'Avatar.' "

Other fans have expressed feelings of disgust with the human race and disengagement with reality.

(Just so you know, you're getting the abridged version. Yeah, there's more
.)

Within the fan community, suggestions for battling feelings of depression after seeing the movie include things like playing "Avatar" video games or downloading the movie soundtrack, in addition to encouraging members to relate to other people outside the virtual realm and to seek out positive and constructive activities.

Wow....very interesting topic. ^.^ 1st, i haven't watched the movie so the closest i've gotten to it was reading an rhetorical analysis term paper on the movie itself. Did you find find any particular aspect of the movie that caused the whole "hysteria" thing going on or was it just the fantasy?

That speaks for itself...

OMG this is tottally GENIOUS!! the same could be done with avatar and disney's atlantis

you have to be mental to wanting to kill yourself just because you can't live in a fantasy world inhabited by intergalactical giant smurfs who can litterally plug into trees

the only thing that iwas drepressing about avatar was how unoriginal the story is and how akward that sex scene was, and how the epic cgi made people forget about all that.....

lol that movie was great. i can understand what those people are thinking, i used to think similar thoughts when i saw this anime a long time ago... i became depressed that life sucked so much and it was so great in teh anime, but i was more depressed that i had to accept the realization that it could never be. i think it was at least a week or two i was like a mindless zombie and spent a lot of time in my room undercovers(hey, i was an immature brat =P) aaaand eventually i came over it, never rly had suicidal thoughts tho. it was a learning experience :o

tho srsly, isn't accepting that life aint fair/sux and u gotta do shyt u dun wanna do and whatnot something u learn as a child? o_o well, im not going diss them bcuz they are different for that, but i think it's a waste to be depressed bcuz of the movie. instead, they should enjoy what there is of life, and maybe on their deathbed if they still even care they can dream of pandora lol.

Am I the only loser here who haven't seen the film yet? Jeeez, I feel so behind.

Heard from many people that this movie was great. But oh, for people to be feeling so depressed up to the point of having suicidal thoughts? Hey, that's just so....not normal. Talk about being pathetic.

your not the only one, I haven't seen it either I heard that it was long and then didn't feel in the mood to watch it. but onto the topic if you just now realized that your life sucked and now you want to kill yourself after seeing a movie about blue people living in touch with nature, then theres got to be something wrong with you.

Err... the hell?

I don't want to point any fingers but... most of you who are calling these people "pathetic" or "losers" are apart of an online community that absolutely loves animated cartoons that live in fantasy settings. It would not be far off to say that some of you are probably so obsessed about a certain anime that it would totally ruin your day if something unplanned happened to your favorite character. What's more, some of you crazy fanatics even dress up as your favorite characters in the hopes of being them for a short while.

Doesn't anyone see the irony in this?

Remember when we were little and wished we lived in the pokemon world? And depressed everyday when we'd wake up at 7am to go to school instead of traveling the world for free catching pokemon? Yeah..well..it's something like that. Don't worry. Those losers will eventually grow out of it.

God, I loved avatar. It reminded me of Pocahontas.
lol I remember my dad coming home after watching avatar.
"man...I wish I lived in Pandora. Our planet is shit."

The movie only made us humans look like idiots for doing horrible things. But it's no reason to get depressed over it. Overall, the movie was worth my money =]

It does have a lesson to it, yes. But I mean, it had a happy ending. And yeah, it was worth the watch.
