I must say after a lot of reading, this has been very poorly handled. I think everyone who aren't idiots and actually took some time to read what really happened would agree, and I really hope CR compensates the people who have had to take all this flak while doing nothing wrong.

I guess the only thing I personally can do to voice my discontent (although pretty insignificant) is to not give them my money.

My two cent's worth is just this: I've read everything (that hasn't been deleted by now) and the only one in charge here at CR that I've seen trying to figure out just what happened and who is sincerely apologetic is BasouKazuma. Shouldn't Shinji be the one trying to make things right and figure out what actually went wrong, since we have yet to see him say anything about this matter? CR should NOT have used Twitter as a means of any kind of competition or any other sites. And from what I comprehend of michana's post, they won't be using Twitter for any other contests in the future. If CR wants to do a competition, then find some method of doing it right here. Like giving the random tickets that it does in some of the anime contests to contestants for the drawing.

michana wrote:

Hey guys,

We all LOVE Utada Hikaru and would all love to see her in concert. Unfortunately, there seems to have been some discrepancies on who people believe to be the winners of this contest ever since they were announced. ¹ As a result of everything that has transpired (contest gaming, user complaints, forum arguments, etc), we will no longer conduct contests in this nature. While our goal for contests has been always to secure prizes to excite our users and give back to them, this contest caused user backlash which we would prefer not to see in the future.

Thank you for your understanding and we hope everyone continues to enjoy Utada's music.

*The disputed winners have been contacted privately.

I do agree with a lot of you that the picture that michana used is very misleading. I also think it was. She really should change it and apologize for using it. But if you carefully read her post and comprehend what she is saying, she's not trying to degrade anyone. I had to read through it a few times for my brain to click in.

¹What she is saying is that due to the mess that Twitter made of the contest (in my understanding mind), that CR will not be doing contests in that way anymore. She was just pointing out what had transpired in the other thread. But she really should have left out what she put in the parentheses due to the fact that it is misleading others into thinking what they are posting. And I've seen a lot of members posting that haven't bothered to read the other thread and then skimming over the first post and not really comprehending what it read (due to the fact that what was said in the parentheses they did comprehend) and posting things like sore losers, immature people always ruin it for everyone else, etc. when that isn't the case at hand. But she could have simply put in her post something to this manner, so that everyone wouldn't have had a bad impression and bad feelings: We all LOVE Utada Hikaru and would all love to see her in concert. Unfortunately, there seems to have been some problems in the way that this contest was set up and how the winners were selected. Therefore we will be trying to come up with a better way to hold competitions and select winners in the future. While our goal for contests has been always to secure prizes to excite our users and give back to them, this contest caused user backlash which we would prefer not to happen in the future because our members are important to us.

And I do hope that CR will make amends to those that were affected in the judging of this contest.

Haha, OMFG I called it the day they announced the contest! Such a shame that no mods on CR saw a problem with it the day they proposed the idea =] Makes you wonder about the brains beyond this operation we call CR.

Can't believe their are sore losers. I mean seriously I expected more from CR people. Aren't we all mature enough to admit we lost?

No... most active CR users are ignorant, childish kids. And I mean that in a good way.

The way I first saw the thread, it really translated to "We're stopping contests like Twitter because it didn't work out. We won't be sharing any details because it's our fault for not using Twitter's technology correctly. Here's a picture of a deformed kitty, now feel free to flame the participants of the last contest because it's their fault. "

"...this contest caused user backlash..."
I would say there was little to no user backlash. Instead, it was a bunch of participants sharing evidence and talking over the whole thing maturely. In some instances, an emotion or two might have popped up but it remained very civilized. The reason why this whole thing became a mess was because no one was answering questions or concerns. Many PMs were sent and most still have been unanswered. Using Twitter may not have been the best idea, but as you can see, still nothing productive has come out of this thread. Many have voiced concerns about CR's handling of this and none of those concerns have been dealt with.

Man this sucks I didn't think this little spat would go this far. now everyone involved is being called immature and the people trowing the stones don't even know what happen. Oh well the life of the internet where you can say whatever Bullshit you want.

I love you CR and dont get bend out of shape when people start saying you shouldn't use twitter for the contest they dont know that you might of had a deal with twitter or that you did think it out but missed a small detail no problem it happens.

This dispute has become much less about the tickets themselves and more about how Crunchyroll has conducted themselves during this situation. I expect a site that claims to look out for its users to deal with mishaps with integrity and sympathy. However, in this case we have CR who, while trying to do a good thing, fell short. Instead of providing a good explanation and APOLOGIZING in a timely manner they decided to "call out" and blame everyone involved in the "user arguments". It is extremely disappointing that after all this it seems like CR has too much pride to take any responsibility for what has happened. I saw CR as a site that cared about its users but their actions have honestly left a lasting impression on me. If they would have addressed our concerns, which might I add were not all from the "losers" of the contest, this whole thing could have been avoided. Now CR has depicted themselves in a bad light, which is unfortunate for them, but when you treat your users indifferently what do you expect?

Hey cloud, isn't this ridiculous how it's escalated to this point? Instead of stopping Twitter contests altogether, CR can learn from it and improve it. I don't think it gets anymore complicated than that.

Well, CR may not have responded due to contractual stipulations with Twitter. However, this IS now a CR problem. Are they trying to work things out for the disenfranchised contest winners? If they are trying to get tickets for those people, that may take time, I don't know. In any case, CR has an opportunity to fix this and come out looking good. They should really start by communicating with the two disenfranchised contest participants.

I can see why those people are upset. I didn't participate in the contest, but even with my distaste for Twitter, I might have done so if the contest was for a "My Dying Bride" concert. If the same thing had happened to me as it did to eimiiho, I would be just as vocal. The issue is a performer who hardly ever makes U.S. appearances, this is a big deal for her fans.

I hope CR is able to resolve this problem. In a way, they should think of it as an opportunity to make a couple of fans REALLY happy and create some positive PR for themselves. But to do that, they should have better communication with those users.

@eimiiho
Don't let the "idiot" posts get you down. Something I've noticed about CR users is that they don't read through threads when they post. Many of them have literacy problems, and it would probably require days of reading and sounding out the words phonetically for them to get through a few pages of posts. Most however, are just lazy and start commenting without benefit of "the facts". It is noble of you to try to educate them, but I fear it is probably going to take up a LOT of your time to do so. The sheer number of those types of people in these forums is huge.
I hope things work out and CR makes it better for you.

It is a same that you guys did not do the right thing, apologize and make it right. You made a mistake and all you had to do was apologize and you could have avoided this. The person that was in charge of running the contest made the error and instead of putting the blame where it is due, you blame the contest participants and took the cowardly way out. You should put a qualified person to run the contests.

This is not about being sore losers it is the principle of the matter and your politically correct response or in this case incorrect response.

Hi, long time lurker, first time posting here after registering today. Like others, the provocative cat picture really drew my eye initially. When I read the "Utada Hikaru Contest Update" initially, my gut reaction was as the first two pages of the update: "Gawd, these stupid anime fans just messed everything up." What michana had written, really boiled my blood. I wanted to know who had messed things up. But after reading the previous news update and what transpired, I have to agree that CR did not handle this well at all.

They need to take that update down or at least heavily update it to reword/clarify the situation. As you can see, many passerby's, myself included, read the update from michana as a post that "blamed a few people who messed things up for everybody." I am seriously dissatisfied with this and hope that they will resolve this, the front page post and the contest winners dispute, before it becomes a bigger mess (read: internet backlash at CR because they f'ed up)

thanks for pointing out the fact the CR and Twitter may of had a deal and that's why twitter was use to hold the contest.
I have mention in other post that I though that was why CR used twitter.I really liked everything you posted and I can fully agree with you.

Nope i wasn't involved, i just dont like people being scapegoated due to negligence on the sites end, this post says there was a fight but if you read the winners posts it clearly shows only confusion and people attempting to get answers. My problem here is people like you who bad mouth people when you have no idea what you are even talking about. If people listened a bit more and formed their own opinions rather than taking whats fed to them as law immediately the world would be a damn sight better.

Also if you read the posts a bit more carefully most of the posts, are people speaking badly of the accused users. i am simply trying to stop them being harassed by peeps who may be upset by this post. I found out everyone involved and their user names after 30 seconds of looking, so i doubt many others would have a problem finding out. Quite frankly after reading the whole story, i saw none of the listed offenses ie contest gaming, arguing etc. So if your happy with the site scapegoating it's users thats cool but if or when it happens to you please dont whine to us. XD
