Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama reiterated Wednesday that he has no intention of exerting pressure on prosecutors over their investigations into a scandal involving the fund management body of his ruling party’s kingpin, Ichiro Ozawa.
Hatoyama’s remarks were in response to a question by an opposition lawmaker at the Diet over recent comments by the premier that were widely taken as suggesting that he had urged Ozawa, secretary general of the ruling Democratic Party of Japan, to do battle with prosecutors. ‘‘Secretary General Ozawa is one of those in the DPJ who achieved a change of government, so when he said to me, president of the party, that he is innocent and will fight, I agreed that we should fight together toward a reform of Japanese politics,’’ Hatoyama said.
