Hello there, D here. If you are wonding about the title I put it like that so no one would post and I thought I could edit it later but I was wrong, this title of this thread was sopuse to be "name that reference". I hope it can be change later.

Now you may have been watching Durarara and notice some things in the background or someone said something that sounded like you heard it before. Well after watching Epi. 3 I knew what it was, this anime is a reference anime. Whats a reference anime you ask, well a reference anime (lets call it R.A. for short) is a anime that has well references to other things, most of the time its a anime. There are a few R.A.s out there, but to keep things simple and legel CR has some animes that count as major R.A.s, Hayate no Gotoku !! and Gintama. Durarara does not have as many references as these two, no theses are more subtle, such as a movie sign or what I said at the beginning of the topic. Now this topic is to spot and list the reference.

the format

Here is format to use.

Frist- Get the time of it, this here will help others know where to click so they can skip it.

Secound- name how it was shown, background inamge or someone said something

Third- tell the name of the anime Durarara is referenceing

Last but not least - post a link or pic to support it, if its a sign or it shows a another animes charater post a link to a pic, if someone said something post a link to the anime from a anime database site that gives info that supports what was said or a vid clip (no full Epi.s just a clip)

Now the list, you can use this as some exmples too.

Yeah I keep checking this forum and no one's posting anything, so sad I know some references for the list, but I only pick up on the really obvious ones. Hopefully someone else will add some too and breath some life into this thread. This is such a good show, I can't believe no one wants to talk about it!

Episode One:

At 1:16 there is a Baccano! picture above the Cinesun of the funny robbing couple dancing, at 6:34 the Cinesun also features a clip from Baccano! of Jacuzi Splat on the train

There's also a chic at 4:49 that Kida and Mikado walk past and she's not greyed out like background people usually are. I'm thinking she may be a reference to something because her clothes look like an anime costume, not something you'd see someone wearing. Can anyone confirm that???

Episode Three:

at 7:46 there are some signs featuring Baccano! Characters, there is also a picture of the mute chic from Baccano! in the background around 8:36.

Episode Six:

18:15 the password for the Dollars web site is Baccano.

21:15 the mangas the manhunter has to choose his torture from are Ladies X Butlers and the Bludgeoning Angel you mentioned earlier.

Episode Seven:

The movie posters around Shizuo's brother's poster feature Baccano! and some other animes. The first shot of them is at 5:16, but they're seen later on too, same posters.

I don't really think that this is a reference anime but it does have some references(but it has to be the same company who published the same thing/series(in order to promote themselves)unlike hayate no gotoku it's very censored since the animes/mangas mentioned aren't from the same company
But Gintama have Shonen JUMP characters involved since Gintama itself it from Shonen Jump so it's like a sister company...?
Dengeki Bunko, the one who published the novel, also published Lady versus Butler and Bokusatsu Tenshi Dokuro-chan....so they're all from the same company basically, selfadvertisinglolDengikiBunko.

While on the manga version...it's gangan fantasy
...Gangan Fantasy....(kuroshitsuji,nabari no ou,it's also the magazine who published the same manga)And the refs there were different(kuroshitsuji kk) because kuroshitsuji wasn't being published by Dengeki Bunko but by GFantasy-square enix.

And they're in Ikebukero(real place idk?) so it's probable that it has some references but it's not a reference anime but it has a little references mentions.(or ads)

And the writer of this is also the writer of Baccano(and the animator team who did this was also the same as Baccano,so I've heard),I wouldn't consider it as a reference one since author sometimes have tendency to add some crossover/cameos of their own work...(xxx holic ,card captor sakura, tsubasa reservoir chronicle, magical knights rayearth?//cross game?//bakuman(mentioned death note and other series but it's not really a ref manga but it refs since it's from the same company)

So the most probably refs that you're only going to find is whether from Dengeki Bunko or Baccano!
I think...

@Raizoku
Yeah, Ikebukuro is a real place. It's the one place in Tokyo where you can go to buy tons of manga, anime, and see all kinds of movies. I've heard people call it the "gaming district" of Tokyo.

Most of the stuff that you see referenced is from the writer's other works or something not very well known.
