When 18-year-old Pittsburgh resident Jordan Miles was surrounded by three disreputable-looking men on the way to his grandmother’s house, he did the entirely sensible thing: He fled, thinking that the marauders were criminals.

Unfortunately for Miles, his assailants weren’t common criminals, but rather the state-employed variety — undercover police officers. Street criminals would likely have left him alone. The police not only severely beat him but — in keeping with standard procedure — accused him of several supposed crimes, including “loitering,” “resisting arrest,” and “aggravated assault” (presumably by staining the fists of his assailants with his blood).

When the undercover officers materialized, the honor student ran three steps before slipping and falling to the sidewalk, whereupon the heroic guardians of the public weal attacked him with a stun gun and beat him with fists, knees, and a branch — and tore out a huge chunk of hair for good measure.

(See photos of the beating victim here.)

The hired thugs claimed in a criminal report that the 5′6″, 150-pound viola player looked “suspicious” and appeared to be armed with a “heavy object”; the weapon in question proved to be a bottle of Mountain Dew, an admittedly deadly concoction but one that is dangerous only to those who consume it.

As is usually the case in incidents of this kind, the assailants described their assault in self-serving terms.

The report claims that the tax-engorged bullies identified themselves as police, a morally inconsequential detail disputed by the victim. When Miles tried to free himself, the officers “delivered 2-3 closed fist strikes to Miles’ head/face with still no effect,” and then inflicted a “knee strike to Miles’ head causing him to momentarily stop resisting,” so that handcuffs could be slapped on the victim’s wrists. The victim later recalled that “I thought I was going to die” beneath the courageous ministrations of Pittsburgh’s, ahem, “finest.”

All of this abuse was justified, the report insists, because it was used only “to subdue the teenager as he tried to get away,” in the words of a CNN summary. A rapist who beats a would-be victim can make exactly the same claim, of course.

The supposed men responsible for this crime have been “punished” by being re-assigned to duty as uniformed officers. Their identity, unlike that of the victim, is being withheld from the public.

'As long as you understand that was not a race thing.. ' Just last night I was also attacked by the cop... because I was wearing long dark jacket taking a walk at night.. 'lucky for me at the time I was walking with a friend of mine (A COP) my friend slap his badge in the other state police officers face, and demanded his resins for his actions. He replied by saying in a rude way, I was acting suspicious.

It took all my strength not to just hall off and knock that fucker out. Nothing happen from that.. I called the state police office to bitch about it.. but they just gave me the run around... about there being reports of people braking into houses in that area. Later I asked my friend the cop (Olean NY, Patrol officer) He said that the he herd no such report through his station from anyone.

I was thinking of suing the state boys,, but the people I was talking with about it said I do not have enough of a case, do to it being broken up before he could do any damage to me. (he is lucky! he would have been the one being damaged.. I am Not a push over wen people try to jump me.. Cop or not.)

...Its not a good idea to fight a cop. Cops represent the most powerful minority in the world and 99% of them are armed. They r the most loyal group in America- they never rat each other out, and they get away with everything. They break laws and get away with them in front of other police. They hate the public, and the public hates them (no offcier has ever smiled at me in my entire life).

When police abuse you and take away your rights without probable cause, it's best to sit there and surrender and take the beating without resistence if you can. The only thing you should say is "Stop" or "I surrender". Or scream "Have Mercy". Usually this will be recorded by some camera on thier car or on a street light. It will also attract public attention (which was pivital in the civial rights era).

When they arrest you, you should have little to know charges if you keep your mouth shut (no cursing, threats, basically dont piss them off).At the end of the day, go to court and prove through video evidence that the police had no prabable cause to even suspect you. When your lawyer proves that all charges agaisnt u will have to be dropped. Then you can sue them for a ridiculas amount of money. the constitution was meant to protect (in a offcial way) the American people from this. Its a good tool to use to get legal revenge.

And it may have been a race thing, no way to prove it though, but police have been known to attack minorities to let off steam.Of corse this isnt limited to minorities, children can be victims and even the majority. It generally depends on where you live.If you live in some upscale nieghborhood where crime is low, police will treat u with kindness. If u live in the ghetto, they treat u like trash. There is a study that proves it. Basicaly the minority of a certain area will be subjected to the police's bigotry. (doesnt matter what race the minority is-in some areas white people are the minority subjected to black police's and white police's bigotry and vice versa).

Disrespect is the biggest factor in police brutality.Dont disrespect guys with guns. Its better to be a push over when facing armed people then to be pushed into a coffin.Only fight people who dont have guns.Guns= HUGE advantage. Cops + guns= OWNAGE.

The sad thing is the victim in the OP did everything right, but he happened to be black at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Btw, where u in a high crime area when you were attacked? peace over war

niether ex soldiers or military cops have juristiction or any real legal power in the civil world. Even if u utterly destroy a cop, it will be hard to prove self defense for a cop killer.Normal cops arnt very good fighters-they arnt allowed to be, so they rely heavily on thier fire arms, other cops, and the entire executive branch. peace over war

Not all cops are scum bags though some obviously are and if you have never had a cop smile at you in your entire life you either live in a very crappy place or you have never treated a cop nicely. These cops were obviously out of line, hopefully they got some kind of real punishment but it sounds like they didn't. That part of america it doesn't surprise me, there are too many inner city problems and too many cops who are trained to assume the worst from the get go.

It's not about whether individual cops are scumbags or not, it's about their role in society. The police were invented by right wing conservative Sir Robert Peel, in the early 1800's to keep a rising working class movement in England (the Chartists) suppressed. They were the Metropolitan Police, "Bobbie" after Sir Robert, or "Peeler's Bloody Gang", so-called for their love of the billy club. This was indirect contrast to the constabulatory and magistrates that had kept a disorganized feudal peasantry and nascent working class down by use of the saber and musket. Sabers and muskets were good for disbanding unorganized, uneducated peasants.

But, as English capitalism created, trained and organized and the working class out of the disenfranchised peasantry of feudalism, the constabulatory system proved wholly inadequate, because sabers and muskets created martyrs; good for organizing the next rally and keep a movement going. The Peterloo massacre, was the turning point, when a rising working class movement demanded democracy, and an end to votes only for wealthy property holders.

The constables and magistrates hacked and shot away, and the blood and bodies of men, and women stained the grass.

Instead of creating martyrs that could rally an entire nation, the police could use the billy club to humiliate the local organizer (bloody, but alive, no martyr and out of commission) and keep the working class passive and at their work benches and not in the street. The police patrolled, "spied", on working class neighborhoods and kept info on working class movements, whereas, the earlier constabulatory did not.

Many new methods of keeping the working class down and passive were invented by the police, but none more effective than that created Sir Arther Conan Doyle; the myth of the crime solver. It took fifty years after the police was created, but when the "Copper" became a "detective", capitalism finally found a formula that made the police a respectable vocation among the more easily duped of the working class.

If the police target blacks in America more than whites, it's only the expression of the history of racism in the US dating back to Reconstruction and slavery before that.

However, police brutality exist the world over. It's part of their social function in society and not because of 'rotten apples'. In fact, as the life of Frank Serpico shows, it's actually the other way around; there are a small few good apples in sea of corruption. And it's a struggle to prevent decay, when all the other apples around you are rotten to the core.

undercover cops = secret police

shouldn't they have approached the guy calmly or show a badge first? Or at least not surround him.
