Hello everyone
Just a quick question. Forgive me if this question has already been answered.

I have been seeing some video lag/stuttering (when the camera pans) on some shows here.
Not all shows are effected however.
Newer shows like Naruto Shippuden or Durarara run perfect on 720p with no lag/stutter, while some (mainly some of the older ones) are riddled with stutter.
So i wonder; is that normal? Like the video is supposed to be like that for the older shows.
Or is it a problem on my end?
Oh by the way i run Firefox with flash v10 installed.

Thanks in advance.

I'm not certain what the problem would be, though it is hard to smoothly stream such high quality videos through Flash. I'd need examples with timestamps but it is possible that our previous encoding methods caused some stuttering or required higher CPU usage.

I get the same thing even on a high end system. It's the encodes. Example Soranowoto episode one is fine the others, constant jerkiness during panning scenes. Only decent solution, wait for a better player (ha) or try Flash beta 2. It helps, but then again it is beta so it's your call.

Ah I thought it might be something like that, but thanks for the response :)
on a side note i just watched a youtube video with flash at full 1080P with no problems and i'm wondering why the video jerkiness/stuttering was only happening here...

thanks again

I've been seeing the same thing for a couple weeks now - videos getting stuck buffering. Just now trying to watch Omamori Himari it got stuck at 1:19, tried again a half hour later, and at 4:00, 4:01, 4:03, and finally 4:07 it got stuck again, going nowhere after 4:07 even letting it sit there for a few minutes trying to buffer. The sad thing is I've watched 720p streams from CR with no problem in the past - but the freezing I'm talking about with Himari just happened with the SD feed - I resorted to SD hoping it'd be more likely to work, but no such luck.

It seems strange to me that YouTube doesn't have an issue but CR in craptastic SD still has it - I've been happy with CR for the past year now, but I'm a little annoyed spending $20 for something I can't watch in low-res, much less the 720p I'm paying for. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated...

If you are using openDNS, try a different service, like Google (8.8.8.8 + 8.8.4.4).

No problems here. SD or HD 720p.

My setup:

Core i7 920
12 gb DDR3
Windows 7 64 bit
ATI 5850
10/2 cable
Latest version of Flash
Latest version of Firefox and IE.

I am a recent subscriber and I have yet to experience "issues" regarding playback.

I have:

Core2 Quad 2.8ghz
4gb Ram
Windows Vista 64bit
16mb/s cable
flash and firefox updated

Watched Sora no Woto ep1 perfectly on SD or 720P, while shows like la corda doro was very stuttery.
No problems anywhere else like Youtube.
So im gonna go with what Endosanity said and say its the encodes....
Or get a comp as good as Rodelgez i suppose

unless someone has a better solution i dunno...

edit: also feed gets stuck on buffering sometimes too like suguru2005 but nothing major.
It always resumed after a few seconds.
Thought i wouldnt mention this because it was minor for me but if its happening to someone else
then i will "raise my hand" so to speak. (although its probably just my connection)

Something is funky somewhere. Hanamaru Kindergarten, all three eps so far are fine, Omamori Himari is fine also, but Soranowoto episode 2, Letter Bee, Saki... chugga-chugga. And CPU usage usually never goes higher than 2% whether it's 480 or 720 (if available) so it's not because these are "intense high quality videos"

Like others, I don't have this jerking around at any other media site either. Even FAILimation's beer-goggle vision player runs things smooth. I even have a subscription with Netflix and stream anime and movies there and the playback is great, probably the best of all the sites I've seen. But they use Silverlight now so maybe that's the difference but that's neither here nor there.

Perhaps better encodes with embedded subs would do the trick... soft subs for streaming just doesn't work so well. Or maybe just give the CR player an overhaul.

Out of curiosity i checked these video myself to see if i would get the same results and sure enough....
I get the same results.
And on top of that Soranowoto ep2 also froze every every few seconds making it totally unwatchable (laff) .sigh

Something is indeed funky.

I find the jumpy video to be related to network congestion. Depending on how much data traffic is occurring in your neighborhood, the data stream will experience occasional hiccups. Unfortunately, with the very short buffer duration in the CR player, a hiccup is enough to both freeze the player, or cause the player to jump over anything from a few seconds to a few minutes of content.

When panning from left to right or right to left, not a single hiccup... smooth transition right? I'm not talking buffering stutters either. Or start an episode of Saki, perfect fluid "camera" movement right? Absolutely no pauses between subtitles either?

Then again, most of us don't have systems powerful enough to alter the orbit of the Earth's satellites either.

Even 1st ep Saki at 720p. Smooth playback.

There is ONE PQ issue I noticed once I fired up my projector and that is the aliasing artifact that comes and goes. Its very distracting.

Its actually also very visible on my 24" LCD monitor. When watching the episodes in only 480p its not that noticeable but its there.

I have to sample more streams before I conclude the PQ issue is affecting all Cruchyroll's streams.
