yes i read the red "typically designed by the player" not always

RPG, J-RPG both have the words Roleplaying Game ur merely splitting hairs just because u dont get to have an option to change the features of a character roleplaying is roleplaying that's that.

In essence even games that you define as RPGs arent at all for the simple fact as u dont create a character u merely customize pre-existing constructs with sets of elements like hair and facial features that makes an illusion of uniqueness when in fact you will not be the only one with that particular set

i used wiki just cuz it was quick, and easy not as concrete proof, my words wouldnt mean much to u. RPG is wen u control fictional character(s) regardless if u made it or not and proceed through a story leveling or just improving the character(s). Zelda has some RPG elements with the whole heart containers etc.

bottom line fenix ur not the one that gets to decide how a RPG is defined, it is the game developers who make it that define it.

ONE. my little brother is a game developer. We both agree on the RPG and JRPG differentials
Two. I been a Gamer for most of my life. Easily over 20 years.
Three. The the fact is that Zelda has no RPG factors at all. At that Any Gamer worth his hide in salt will tell you that Zelda is a strait up action adventure game with no RPG factors.

o wow two ppl think theres a difference... look at this thread theres lots more ppl that think ur wrong

do u honesty think that wat u say will change anything? i can go online and find dozens of games that would fall under ur "JRPG" pseudo-catagory but r listed as RPG u know y.... cuz its the same thing

on retrospect y does this even matter to u? It shouldnt matter how its classified if its fun and ur parent r ok with it.

Yeah a person who has family that went to collage for, and there hole life revolves around the gaming world vs kids on the internet. Who do you think knows more about it?

Its to bad my little brother (26 years old) does not do the internet thread thing.. Because I love to see him and his friends who are all in that line of work pick you apart. (winks)

The fact is there is in their world two categories. RPGs.. like Oblivion and Fallout3, and J-RPGs (action adventure with some rpg qualities..). Like FF are separated into. Final fantasy are not considers RPG to those who test games, produce games, or program games. There in a different category like it or not that is the facts. (and yes they do categorize them. surprised there is no one working in the game industry on this site.)

lol my family went to college too, although my mom doesnt grasp games more complex than mario yes RPGs used to have u make a characters but these days its not a requirement to b classified a RPG as long as u roleplay even "jrpg" style characters its still a roleplaying game

do u even no wat jrpg stands for? Then again ur starting to sound like one of those religous nuts that think ur way is right and is the only way. So like i would say to them "where's your proof?" and i do mean outside ur family and all friends

RPG's are not that common due to the fact with todays gamer expectations require 1. Too much content, 2. Extremely good gameplay, 3. Big Worlds and 4. Good graphics.

The fact that RPG games can almost be be big as MMORPG but without the multiplayer side of it, it takes a hell alot of time to a. Translate it, B. Map the terrain.

Oblivion for example, its huge, there's loads you can do on it but it also took a while to make.

You really have to look at the game developers who think how long it will take to build a game to the current expectations we want.

and most RPG's that come out on Xbox are on PC so the Xbox is pretty much useless now.

Who wants to play Halo anyway? It's absolutely shit.

Another thing, why class Mass Effect 1/2 as RPG? they both hardly have RPG elements. It's just and evolved FPS. Its practically MW2, guns and possible upgrades to guns, different tech could be the same as perks. The only thing it has is the ability to select on how you want to talk to people.

Did you mother go to collage for Game design, programming, computer language, and game scripting? For six years. Like I said he works in the gaming industry, his friends and him work with games. that is his life. Some mother that went to school for who knows what does not matter.

No you play a role in all games from boxing to racing it does not make them RPGs, get that through your thick head. Even if It be cool to play a rpg football game. Think I try talking to my little brother about that. I have one of the games my brother made on the side for wen he was still in collage.
A simple space war simulator.

no but u say nothing bout goin to college for gaming if thats the case then only my older brother would qualify cuz he went to college for that and wen i asked him on the difference of a RPG and JRPG and the first thing he said was "one's made in japan" later i asked if it was a requirement to create a character to b called a RPG and he said "no". unfortunately i caught him in a bad time so i couldnt ask him more

so if ur saying that u play a role in all games that includes Oblivion if so then according to ur logic it doesnt make it a RPG at all

go to any game website for me gamespot.com and search for rpg games u get so many that u wouldnt consider RPG hell i saw three super mario games that have a tag RPG unless ur saying ppl on a professional gaming website r now wrong then i cant help but say u and ur brother r wrong regardless of how many computer languages he knows or wat ever.

a RPG football game? strange i cant help but think eyeshield 21 lol my bros first working game was one of those simple robot fighting arena( the robots looks like metal boxes with wheels and ur option of one of 3-4 simple weapons)

What so hard to understand there is no Game where your not playing a role.. Playing a role does not make it a rpg.. there is more to being an RPG than playing a role. Characters Leveling, Creating a character, placing him into and the game works around what you created.

I believe my brother has a copy of his first game he did his first year in school someplace on the web.. I ask him about it.. You might be able to download it if you wanted to.

Well I have all my brothers School Text books, maby I study up on it and make a simple football game, where you create your character, get experience for tackling, sackes, interceptions, running, or catching the foot ball, or scoring. to place in getting skills... Like berserk that enhances your characters speed and strength 20% , or flash step, that gives your character X2 in speed for a short burst. and other skills like that. I try to make it so you can combine to skills together to make your own special skill. Something like adding flash step and berserk to make a powerful tackle skill for a line backer.. hmm.. I am a metallurgist.. not my area of expertise,,, but I am working on being a jack of all trades. So If I can not do it I try getting my brother to make it.. maby he let us work together on it and make it a online football MMO with the Japanese animated style. I have to see about adding in factors like strength, speed, size (yes size should be a factor.) reflex, int, wis, stamina, hands and jumping. as well. 'I think we might see a lot of all power/speed characters in it like shin from eyeshield 21. Or running backs that is all speed like mr. eyeshield21 him self.

a mmo where you create the football player and even how he looks.. can have him play to positions one offense position and one defense position.

Now that I am thinking about it.. I have to have a talk with my brother..

wat about Final Fantasy XI?is that not a RPG? u dont seem to get it... if u have two games parallel to each other with the only difference is that u make a character and have the character u have to play and the one u made go through the same quests, leveling, and story then wats the difference other then, as i said before "customizing pre-existing constructs with sets of elements"? ur still proceeding through a storyline, leveling, etc. u may not have created the characters but its a character none the less

how can u have a game design by "placing him into and the game works around what you created." thats impossible for the simple fact that they cant program all everything theres a certain level of independance sure but not on the scale as u describe.

ive seen wat programmer have to do to get a game goin i dont get that kind of patience nor the attention to detail to actually do it

the only way ill ever play a sports game is if theres fantasy elements in it like mario kart etc.

'in a rpg the game plays around the characters choices.. Its more open ended. Yes there is a story and a end to the most part, but the game it self revolves around your character and his actions. Its not tide down to a script that it must fallow. That is why Fallout, and oblivion = rpg, and FF7,8,9,10,12= action adventure with some rpg qualities.

As for the sports game, is not giving them special skills they can learn, or skills that you can combine to make secret powers (technique to make like some supper move not counted as a fantasy action element?) Similar to Shins spear attack, or any other combination to make monster power moves or evasive moves. ( I hate sports sim.. so I agree you not see me playing football, or a baseball game.. Unless it has something appealing to it.. like supper powers, or special skills. maby even leveling up, and character creators where you only play your character.

You're logic of what a RPG is and should be is mixed up.

An RPG consisted of strings back then. Giving the player a choice such as yes or no and effect the story in a small way. Stings are rarely used in games today because we have voice overs for everything. That many people have gotten confused with being part of the element of the genre RPG. Almost all games follow a set script/character actions. Even when we had strings. Also I think you are confusing that games could be considered a pure RPG. few games have ever revolved around the RPG genre only. Sorry if I left you a little confused there, but it's a pain to explain what a RPG is thoroughly.

Also Final Fantasy's main genre view is JRPGs and doesn't have the genre JRPG for nothing. It still consist of the basic character building for battles and so on, but of course it would be boring without a story and with some Action/Adventure to help spice things up.

ps. Get off those FPS games and play more RPGs, compare what they have in common, and you'll find that most RPGs are not some game that revolves around a single character and their actions. That would just be one way of expressing an RPG.

pss. I said FPS because FPS games are the most common in the current generation of gaming, forgive me if you do not play them much.

Persona is that the one with the EMO kids who shoot them selves to fight.

That is more of a school sim with some rpg qualities.

They are both JRPGs. The Persona's in themselves help greatly in forming that, especially in Persona 3.

There registered RPG by who.. That is what you should be asking. Not the creators. no there registered by people who are not gamers not creators of games.. But business men running a sight. the no nothing of it.. Hell I have seen Action adventure games like classic Mario and Zelda placed in the RPG section even wen there obviously not rpgs.
