Persona is that the one with the EMO kids who shoot them selves to fight.

That is more of a school sim with some rpg qualities.

thats perosna 3 persona 4 doesnt have that shooting thing

all ur doing is splitting hairs this wont change the fact that its registered as an rpg along with many other titles that u claim to not b rpg

There registered RPG by who.. That is what you should be asking. Not the creators. no there registered by people who are not gamers not creators of games.. But business men running a sight. the no nothing of it.. Hell I have seen Action adventure games like classic Mario and Zelda placed in the RPG section even wen there obviously not rpgs.

i would assume that the developers would iron out what kind of game they r making before hand...

this is tiresome i seems u wont budge nor will i so ill leave it at that

sigh... haaaaaaaaaaayzzzzzzzz.......

leveling up, learning skills, strategies, designing (weapons, armor, etc) ur character, fighting = RPG

create character, free roaming, pointless monster hunting, leveling up = RPG

@ Darkphoenix3450

your just a western kid who loves to play rpgs that has a lame storyline. basically you love the type of rpgs that has no character values

well 2010 looks so good for RPG's for me and my PS3

Final Fantasy XIII
Star Ocean 4: International
Last Rebellion
Ar Tonelico 3
Resonance of Fate
3D Dot Heroes
Alelier Ronoa
Tales of Vesperia(possibly)

I know all of these are JRPG, but that just how I roll!

Those are elements of RPG, but its not an RPG as a whole. Also, many games of different genre spectrum utilizes those elements of RPG but are not RPG.

Eh, I wouldn't brush off Dark's meaning of RPG aside so quickly. What he said is actually quite true. RPG back at its origination on Pen & Paper is all about creating your character, story, abilities (pros and cons), and so on. RPG is also meant for multi-playing with a small group to a pack of ppl.

JRPG tends to not allow players to create their own character, cannot choose where the characters originate (along with their backstory), and usually thrusts the gamer into their characters' story with no control of its development. Games like WoW, Dragon Age: Origin, and Elder Scroll are good examples of RPG that follows most of the rules of what real RPG is. The only three JRPGs that relate well to RPG are FFXI, Chrono Trigger/Cross (despite being unable to create your own characters)

So yeah... JRPGs have similarities to RPG, but you're not playing the story the way you want; you're playing somebody else story.

i don't know what you are thinking, but those are the main things that make a RPG. And of course a game won't be called a RPG just because it includes maybe one or two of the things he mentioned.

Story really doesn't have much to do with an RPG. Truth be, an RPG doesn't actually need a story at all. Also sure creating your character is something you usually find in RPGs, but it is not a necessary factor. There are many ways to approach making an RPG, but i would think leveling up is one of the most important necessities of an RPG, not saying that any game you level up in is an RPG of course or is needed.

I think jedd_grace09 made more sense then you did in his short but straight to the point post, though you are right that Darkphoenix3450 also a a somewhat valid point. It's just his point wasn't completely valid, and jedd_grace09's point was more valid.

tl; dr

why would you get a japanese based company's console if you wanted a genre that's mainly produced in the US / EU?

And then complain that the japanese games that they call RPG's aren't what you want?

-_-''

If you haven't noticed, the market has changed. Today's industry is way more focused on the multiplayer experience so it kind of explains why certain genres are slowly dying out.

Slowly dying out? Even wen their older than most of the new games, they still make it to the top of the charts. So its not that there dying out, its that people in charge are not willing to invest time into real RPG's wen they can spend less money making half assed games, and make just as much money with 30 half assed games as they do with 1 great game.. I blame people who accept the companies corruption in doing this for the lack of good real RPG's Like Fallout3 and Oblivion.

i have always like final fantasy hint the name lol but not what it has become. The original series had more a rpg feel to it if you are really looking for some rpgs get a psp they are so many great choices to choose from it's amazing lol. The whole wrpg vs jrpg is also stupid we have a take on the genre on ways that we see but I will level you ff13 blew chunks I really really hated the game with a passion, if square wants to make a anime or cg animated movie go with that, and this is coming from a guy that plays visual novels all the time. Sadly most rpgs are not really on the next gen console, they are either on the hand-held which I don't mind or stuck on the last gen systems like the wii. I mean even the wii is getting games like arc rise, phantom brave and sakura wars. I wouldn't worry to much fallout newvegas is coming out in October and dragon age is also a good distraction if you like choice in your games.
