Wow, an awful lot in this thread.

Let me lend my point of view as a veteran of the US Military, and an adult.

The best things available for self defense are keeping your wits about you, and avoiding situations that put you at risk. Avoid confrontation, avoid dangerous situations. I fight not fought is a fight won, or simpler a fight avoided is a fight won. That's a little Tai Chi Chuan philosophy for you there. *chuckle*

That said, when it comes to weapons, a trained and practiced person wielding a firearm has a distinct advantage over all others. You can talk all you want about swords being capable of doing this, or martial arts and other forms of self defense can do well if you train well. Don't forget that people also train in 'gun fu'! Someone that carries a handgun legally likely practices with it regularly, and is prepared mentally and reflexively to use it, they won't be threatening you, they will simply shoot you, and if they have a serious firearm, you are probably dead right there. I know when I carry, I carry a Ruger GP100 .357 Magnum revolver with Rem hydro shock munitions. I am practiced and deadly up to about 25 feet. Any more than that, and you are not a threat to me, especially if you are running (Never shoot someone in the back) You won't get close enough to swipe at me with a sword, or grapple me, I will have my smokewagon out an pokerize you in a rather lethal way, because if I have it out, I am aiming it. If I am aiming it, I am prepared to shoot, and since I am well practiced if I shoot, I will likely hit. Real life is not the movies folks, real life is deadly. Avoid the confrontation at all costs, especially in states that have very lenient and inexpensive concealed carry permits, like Alabama. $15 a year, no felonies, over 21, and you can carry a concealed firearm most anywhere. Think on that.

I, by the way, rarely carry anymore, but I keep my license up to date. I used to have to be around large amounts of cash, and my job highly suggested I carry a firearm, so I went pure no nonsense with a solid 357 revolver and particularly deadly ammunition. One look at that chunk of steel saps bravery from all but the most crazy crackheads. And crackheads and their ilk is why I carried, since I had no choice but to be around money in some very bad neighborhoods. Even well concealed, most of them notice that bulge under your shirt and know you are no easy mark.

Anyway... sorry, to summarize: Avoid a bad situation to stay safest, and never try to tangle with a gun, real life is not a movie, you will probably get shot and die.

I believe both guns and knives have a credible role in life in defense of one-self.

Guns... lots of big bad-ass guns

kukri is too big guns are too loud and wastes a lot of ammo. smaller knives are best for everyday self-defense weapon. lighter, easy to use and conceal.

I think the best weapon for a civilian is a gun.. Shoot = BAM, dead.. why bring a knife if someone can outpower you? what if your a skinny girl and a big guy with big muscles starts to attack you and you only got 5 seconds left before he attacks you. that 5 seconds you have can be used to defend yourself.. 1 second to lift, 3 seconds to aim. 1 second to pull that trigger into that mofo's head.

funny, what kind of gun and how trained are you? i really find it funny how people overrate guns. they are deadly however they are not everything. self defense not only call for firepower and brawn you know... if you don't know how to use your weapon don't even wield it.

all weapons should be considered the same. bladed or blunt as long as they can kill... however, doesn't mean you have it does not mean you are going to show it off.

a short knife is great. lets not forget you don't always pick when or where the fight happens: often it comes to you when you're least prepared. a gun works well at range, but if your enemy is right in front of you then that is not a viable option. this is especially true if you're being robbed or assaulted. however, i've been to bars before, and damn, bottles make such great weapons too. sometimes the best weapon is the most clever one improvised from the surrounding area.

Well, we are talking about civilians here so I doubt every single civilian would become a knife wielding master. And just being in possession of a knife doesn't guarantee protection. Actually, a knife can easily be used against you or may become useless should you encounter someone with a gun. The best weapon for anyone is common sense.

It doesn't take a month to teach someone how to use a gun. Guns are not overrated at all, Its the best self-defense weapon and also the worst.

Best weapon for self defense is a firearm obviously, just get some experience by going to a shooting range or something and get a license to own a firearm. My experience is from hunting geese and ducks, which makes my shots more accurate because those little guys can fly pretty freakin' fast! You make it sound like knives are pretty good, and they are good if you know martial arts or somewhat fighting technique.
(I don't hunt for sport, I hunt on a reserve, and I'm Native American.)
(I think there was this knife that can shoot the blade out of the handle, pretty sick right?)
