Lee Junki confirms participation in new drama

It was revealed on March 12th that actor Lee Junki has confirm his participation in new SBS medical sageuk drama, God, scheduled for broadcast in the latter half of 2010.

The drama is helmed by famed director, Kim Jong Hak whose past works include Sandglass, Tae Wang Sa Shin Gi among others.

The storyline revolves around a young doctor, Kangsan and his lifestory in becoming a famed doctor who works miracles. Kim Hee Sun is in line to be the female lead.

Just like his previous fusion sageuk, Tae Wang Sa Shin Gi, big money will be poured into this new production and one can expect to see lots of beautiful CG scenes.

Kim Jong Hak expressed that Lee Junki was an unanimous choice as the male lead, because besides having great acting ability, his high popularity in Asia will help in exporting the drama overseas a breeze.

Lee Junki might have to give up Faith for army

Having celebrated his 29th birthday this past weekend, it was revealed that Lee Junki might have to give up on the chance of acting in the drama, Faith.

Lee Junki have already deferred many times in the past and according to Korean military regulations, the latest a fit male must enter the army is when he’s 29. Judging from the present situation, it would be difficult to defer once again if an enlistment notice comes his way this time.

While he is likely to be able to complete filming for his movie, Grand Prix, it looks impossible for him to take on the drama, Faith which is scheduled for broadcast in the latter half of 2010. With the drama having 24 episodes, the completion of the drama is likely to be at the beginning of next year.

Mentor Entertainment expressed,

“Lee Junki will be enlisting but because we haven’t got any notice yet, the exact date and time aren’t confirmed yet. We understand the time constraints for the filming of Faith but we are doing our best to coordinate the schedule. We will be filing for a deferment if we get the notice before the filming. But if it doesn’t get approved, he will have to give up on the drama.”

Philip Lee joins cast of medical sageuk Faith

Philip Lee is probably most known for his drama debut role as Cheoro (as pictured above) in 2007’s fantasy sageuk series Legend (Taewangsasingi), which he followed up by playing a man on a revenge mission in last year’s contemporary thriller Story of a Man. His next project returns him to the historical genre in Faith, a medical series starring Lee Jun-ki and Kim Hee-sun.

(However, it is noted that currently Lee Jun-ki’s casting status has become uncertain due to the issue of his upcoming military service requirement. The drama is planning to air later this year, but there’s not much room to play with, as Lee Jun-ki will have to serve by the end of this year.)

The drama is set in the Goryeo (Koryo) era, but it doesn’t sound like a straight sageuk (unlike, say, the current medical sageuk Jejoongwon), and is instead described as a “fantasy medical drama.” He plays a skilled and notable doctor whose cold personality gives him a proud image.

This reunites Philip Lee with director Kim Jong-hak, with whom he worked in Legend. (Trivia! Legend was written by Song Ji-nah, who also worked together with PD Kim on 1995’s Sandglass. Writer Song was so impressed with Philip Lee’s performance in Legend that she wrote him into her following drama, Story of a Man. Her next project, by the way, is the anticipated campus series What’s Up.)

Faith is being written by Jung Yoon-jung and Hwang Hye-ryung, who wrote for both seasons of the hit cable drama Chosun Police. Not a bad lineup.

Lee Jun-ki quits film and drama for army duty

Military service has been looming for a while for Lee Jun-ki, but in a surprising turn, he has announced that he will enlist next week, on May 3. As a 1982-er, Lee would have to enlist by the end of this year, but he received his papers shortly after beginning his new film project.

This forces him not only to drop his upcoming drama Faith, which would have paired him with Kim Hee-sun and Philip Lee, but also his film Grand Prix, which has already begun shooting. Grand Prix is the horse-racing movie that co-stars Kim Tae-hee, and because of Lee’s last-minute dropout, the producers are currently filming all the parts that exclude his character while hurriedly casting Lee’s replacement.

Lee had attempted to postpone enlistment, as he had filled his work schedule through the end of the year, but was unable to do so

Kim Hee-sun’s Faith up for a 2011 premiere

The high-budget drama production of Faith is going forward despite the loss of its star Lee Jun-ki to military service. (Lee had been cast, but was forced to drop out.) Kim Hee-sun, however, is still onboard, and the 30 billion won project (which seems insanely high for a drama series) will be produced in 3D.

Philip Lee (Story of a Man) is also onboard, but the lead character is still up for grabs. A “famous Hallyu star” is purportedly in contention.

Faith is a fantasy medical sageuk that deals with Oriental medicine in the Goryeo era. Definitely a lot of interesting things to mix into one project. Directing is PD Kim Jong-hak, who made notable use of computer graphics in the fantasy-sageuk drama Legend. According to once production source, they are using 3D filming techniques in order to perfect the visual effects. The drama is planning to hold its production press conference and begin filming in October.

Faith doesn’t yet have a broadcast station or a timeslot, but will probably air next year. Initially set to be an SBS show, it now has a strong chance of going with MBC instead, according to one rep with MBC’s drama department, who said that chances are good. They are, however, proceeding carefully in light of the enormous budget and the considerations that come therewith.

Lee Min Young Comes Back to Drama Land with ‘Faith’

Just a few days ago, Korean actor Kang Ji Hwan (Coffee House) was chosen as the male lead (replacing Lee Jun Ki) in upcoming oriental-medical drama called ‘Faith’, now another Korean actress’s name has been announced to take part in this drama. She is Lee Min Young (Love and Ambition) who finally comes back to drama land after a 5-year hiatus.

There is still no details yet for her role, but she is mentioned as one of the main cast. Besides with Kang, she will co-work with ‘90s drama Queen Kim Hee Sun (Sad Love Song) who also makes a comeback after 5-year vacuum, veteran actor Choi Min Soo (Road No. 1), Lee Philip (Secret Garden), Kim Seung Soo (I am Legend).

The drama whose 3 billion won (approx $2.3 million USD) production budget will be directed by PD Kim Jong Han. He will use a CG (Computer Graphics) effects that was used in his previously mega-hit sageuk drama ‘The Legend’ starring Bae Yong Jun.

Faith loses its second leading man in Kang Ji-hwan

Hmm, another setback for high-budget medical sageuk series Faith, which has lost leading man No. 2, Kang Ji-hwan, who’d been called in after the drama first lost Lee Jun-ki to army duty.

The reason given by Kang’s management, S Plus Entertainment, was that he would be cutting back on all acting and industry activities, due to legal matters stemming from his contract dispute with previous management company, Jambo Entertainment. There had been reports that the dispute had been settled, allowing Kang to star in SBS drama Coffee House earlier this year, but the Korea Entertainment Producers Association has a different take on things. Since Kang didn’t abide by their request to stall all activities until a settlement was made, matters have dragged on over the past year.

The association has asked its members to keep Kang out of Faith; they did the same with Coffee House, which went ignored, but this time Kang has stepped back. His reps apologized to the association and acknowledged that this matter has become more than a company/actor issue and is now an industry matter.

The drama, directed by Legend PD Kim Jong-hak, is being produced in 3D for broadcast in the first half of 2011, and has cast Kim Hee-sun, Philip Lee, Kim Seung-soo, and Choi Min-soo.

Kang Ji-hwan doesn’t want to lose Faith

Blockbuster 3D fusion sageuk medical drama (rah, that’s a mouthful) Faith has lost its leading man, not once, but twice, and it looks like bachelor number two is back again for another round.

Kang Ji-hwan is reportedly digging his heels in, trying to iron out his ongoing battle with the Korea Entertainment Producers Association, so that he can stick with Faith, which begins principal photography next month. He had originally announced leaving the production due to the contract dispute that’s been hanging over his head for the past year. It’s also been putting a damper on a certain co-blogger’s penchant for dramas starring the man in question.

Kang’s side claims that his contract dispute with his last management company was settled, but the Korea Entertainment Producers Association claims that he starred in Coffee House without clearance, and has since pushed for him to take a hiatus, prompting him to finally bow out of Faith late last year. The hilarious thing is, the Producers Association is claiming that they never forced him to quit Faith. But…are you still boycotting? ‘Cause I’m not good at math, but that doesn’t add up, from where I stand.

Faith‘s PD Kim Jong-hak (Legend) released a noncommittal statement that nothing could be announced officially because Kang Ji-hwan’s dispute hasn’t been cleared yet, though I can see a multitude of reasons why he’d want to hang on to Kang, not least of which is the 10 million won blown on pre-production with Kang as the star, including test shots and promotional materials.

The astronomical budget of 30 billion won is mostly going to be funding the special effects, which makes me think that despite its description as a drama about eastern medicine in the Goryeo era, that it’s going to be much more action-centric, a la PD Kim’s last drama, Legend.

Faith boasts a star-studded cast including Kim Hee-sun, Philip Lee, Kim Seung-soo, and Choi Min-soo, and begins filming in April.

Yang Dong-geun is Kim Hee-seon's man

Selected as the leading actor for fantasy historical drama "Faith"...

Yang Dong-geun proved he has 'beautiful luck' once again.

He is very likely to be the leading male character in the fantasy period piece "Faith". Acting opposite him will be the actress Kim Hee-seon. His luck of being able to work with beautiful actresses such as Kim Tae-hee, Lee Na-young, Han Chae-young, Han Ga-in and more continues.

Yang Dong-geun leaned toward accepting the offer for the drama because it is more a fantasy tale than a historical drama. He is currently in negotiations with the producers. This is the first time he's appearing in a drama since "I Am Sam" five years ago.

He is going to take on the role of a genius herbal medicine doctor who is also known as the 'Hand of God'. He meets Kim Hee-seon, who is from the modern era, and they begin to develop mutual feelings. "Faith" has gone into official preparations with a large scale outdoor set and more.

Yang Dong-geun starts work on "Faith" after recently completing the movie "Perfect Game", which was released in December last year. It will be a long-term box office success, likely until the Lunar New Year. He will also be on cable TV channel OCN's "Hero - Drama - 2012", a ten-episode series.

"Faith" is produced by Kim Jong-hak from "Sandglass" and writer Song Ji-na. The cast includes Yang Dong-geun, Kim Hee-seon, Choi Min-soo and others.
