A sturdy kind

actually I'm not into that whole cellphone crap

I just have a basic LG flip-phone, no texting, no bells or whistles
I personally don't see that much need for texting except to cheat on tests or cause 20 car pileups (see texting PSA--seriously? Ppl text while driving? Someone new thread that plox)

Nokia lol. T-Mobile is cool but not that much signal so either Verizon or AT&T. Dont buy a sidekick lol.

Depends on what you're using the phone for. Like social reasons or business or whatever. Different strokes for different folks! I'd just advise people not to use Telus as their service provider. They're horrid.

Blackberry bold
Great for text messaging, instant messaging, some useful and good applications
(lots more can be downloaded in the blackberry app website, mostly for free)
It has word applications, internet, powerpoint, music, video, ... etc.

I personally prefer Blackberry than a iphone
iphones can freeze up oftenly during startups and use. (Some of my friends have iphones)

But if you dont text or whtvr or dont need all that app & just use it for calls,
It's not really reasonable to buy a Blackberry or iphone.

Depends on if your using it for business or social reasons.
I find blackberry to be really easy to use. I use it for school stuff when i'm outside (word / PWP app.), text..etc.

O2 Ice was good.
Verrrrry sturdy phone. I stood on it and turned with my weight on it, on concrete and the screen only got a little scuffed.
Shame it was limited edition.

I dunno about companies though. I've only had 4 phones.
- Philips Savvy (fucking brick of a thing xD)
- Nokia 6610
- O2 Ice
My current one is a sony ericsson, not sure what model though... don't remember. xD

I don't like these touchscreens though.
It makes me memorising my keypad for all these years irrelevant, because with a touch screen I can't feel my way around the keys when texting in my pocket.

HTC and their latest line of android phones are, simply put, magical. Sturdy materials and very customizeable. The android platform requires a bit of know-how in electronics to get its true potential out though, so its not really suited for everyone.
I'd pick an android-based phone over iPhone, Sony Ericsson (and Nokia in particular) any day.

Iphones are useful but I just hate Apple

You should only get one if you've got the pockets for it, $300 w/ a 2 yr plan, and like $600 w/out for a 32gb 3GS (3G has no camera) + 30/mo for that data plan which actually makes the phone worth anything.

Also, invest in something to protect it b/c I'm pretty sure those things break easily when dropped, and the charge to fix em probably won't be that nice (outrageous from what I hear)
