The woman who admitted to falsely accusing construction worker William McCaffrey of participating in her gang rape has been sentenced to up to 3 years in prison.
According to the New York Times, Biurny Peguero, 27, testified at McCaffrey's trial that he "was the ringleader among three men who raped her at knifepoint after luring her into their car" in 2005. McCaffrey was convicted and spent four years in jail before his conviction was overturned in December, 2009. McCaffrey was originally sentenced to twenty years in jail for his alleged role in the assault.
Other media sources identify the woman as Biurny Peguero Gonzalez with no explanation for the discrepancy.
At the original trial DNA evidence had been used to connect McCaffery to a bite mark on Biurny's arm. Subsequent DNA testing revealed that the wound was more closely linked to two female companions Peguero had spent the evening drinking with and subsequently fought with.
The woman's defense attorney attributed her recantation not to the new, conflicting DNA evidence but rather, to a religious conversion that led her to confess her false and injurious claims against McCaffrey to a priest.
Folowing her sentencing Peguero offered an apology to McCaffery, ""To Mr. McCaffrey, I am aware that nothing I do or say to him can bring back the years he spent in jail. I want him to know I will carry this guilt for the rest of my life."
McCaffrey's comments after the trial were more mundane, and more realistic. According to gothamist.com,

McCaffrey said he hopes Gonzalez "doesn't go through what I went though," considering that in prison "rape is the worse crime possible." He added that anyone who would "lie and paint somebody as a rapist is worse than a real rapist or a real murderer," but said he wishes her "the best of luck," the tabloid reports. "Jail isn't easy," he said.

This completly destroys the legal system for me. The word of 1 woman against 3 men with absolutly no evidence what so ever, and one man gets sent to jail for 4 years? The sexist flaws in the legal system are really highlighted in this case and it disgusts me.

the system is sexist for a reason- women only comment 10% of the crime in the USA. and all female prisons are wayyy more safe then ment prisons. Women just arent assholes like men peace over war

This story also similar to the story in Hofstra University. A girl claimed that she was gang raped by 5 guys. One of the guy recorded her voice saying that she agreed to having sex with those guys. She later confessed.

so what the guy doesn't get any compensation? he lost 4 years of his life doesn't he deserve something like money or since the woman accused him of rape she could like give herself up to him for like a week or something.
