It's a paranoia movie, rife with guilty secrets, nightmare visions and gothic horrors.
I was so confused throughout the whole movie... Until the end.
Shutter Island isn’t one of those simple “love it” or “hate it” movie experiences – this is one of those films that makes you go, “Hmmmm…”
Though this movie was NOT what I was expecting. The dream sequences were the best I've seen for a long time. It's definitely a Sixth Sense type of movie, but the material matter is much more horrific and perverse. I highly recommend it, if you have a strong stomach for human tragedy / :

What did you think after watching it?

I'm going to see this movie this weekend. I've just finished re-reading the book (I love Dennis Lehane's stuff), is it faithfull to the novel? Of course, Martin Scorsese is one of the greatest American directors living today, so you can't go wrong there.

Yeah, It does. However, The transitions between “the real” and “the surreal” were often quite awkward? or clunky.
But taking into account that It’s a hard story to tell on film. And anyways, the photography and cinematography are simply spectacular. Haha, definitely can't go wrong.

i didn't read the book, but i really enjoyed this film. mostly because of the music. the music was...THE BEST THING EVER (ever ever ever).
i mean, it was normal for Scorsese, i suppose, but seriously, the music is intensly awesome. i've noticed the scores of films before, but this one, i remember.

i totally agree with this, it was the only part i was sort of disappointed with, i didn't think there was ANY difference between how the 'real' scenes were depicted and how the sequences looked. which i guess was supposed to be a device to fool the audience, but we could've known those dreams were dreams without being handed the secret innner workings of the story - which i and i'm sure lots of others guessed pretty early on, i think since 'Sixth Sense', audiences are trained to look for the twist, and yeah, in this one, i found it. but i still enjoyed the movie immensly and would recommend it. i'm gonna go buy the score!

Yeah, I found it to be very interesting from beginning to end. There isnt much going on in the beginning of the film but that doesnt make it slow, it actually builds on the mysteries of whats going down on the island. It kept me processing small clues throughout the movie till maybe 3/4 of the way in when i put all of it together and figured it out. AND although my first assumption of the story was correct, there were plenty of moments that threw me off a little and made me second guess myself which to me made the experience even more enjoyable.

I was really disappointed. It was creepy, but sooo boring. And the twist at the end wasn't that good and was confusing.

I like the themes though.

Loved it! I honestly thought it was great although the person I saw it with was iffy about it. Both of us usually agree on movies together so it was odd to be in contrast with her.

I've been waiting to watch this since... was it summer when the trailer first came out? Either way, a very long time. I think I'll finally get to see it next week.
