Ugent: earthquake of 8.8 degrees off the Chilean coast, several towns without electricity. The epicenter 90 km from Concepcion. Tsunami warning for Chile, Peru and Ecuador. Many old buildings fell down, for now they are calculating 78 deceased, this earthquake happened at 3:34 am Chili time.

At 3:34 am today there was an earthquake measuring 8.3 degrees on the Richter scale that struck the coast of Chile, according to U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The quake was centered in southern Chile near the town of Maule, about 321 kilometers southwest of Santiago and 104 miles from Talca, but felt in neighboring Argentina and triggered tsunami warnings.

The earthquake, superior in magnitude to that recently devastated Haiti, struck the central and southern Chile. The epicenter was at sea 90 miles west of the coastal area of Concepción. It was known that there is a tsunami warning along the coast of Chile

Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, was presented at the headquarters of the National Emergency Office (Onemi) and informed the media that at least 6 people have died earthquake victim.

"We have preliminary information that five of the victims were in the Maule Region and one in the Auracania" said Chilean President from headquarters in Onemi.

The people called for calm and announced that at six o'clock when Chile will be a strategic committee meeting to discuss the situation.

He explained that the first operations were sent three teams to the regions of Maule, Bio-bio and Auracania, "where communications are not standardized yet.

According to news agency Reuters, the local radio Cooperativa, citing officials from the National Emergency Office (Onemi) said one person died in the region of Araucanía, south of the country due to falling debris.

In Santiago and other cities thousands of people left their homes and are on the streets for fear of aftershocks.

"Many people are camping in the streets," one witness told Reuters. On the streets heard of firefighters and police sirens.

The witness said the quake caused severe fluctuations in tall buildings and power outages at least within the area of Concepción, in the south and the Chilean capital, Santiago, located in the Midwest.

In Argentina, several cities in the Andean provinces of San Juan, Mendoza, Neuquén and La Rioja, including the border with Chile, felt the movement, witnesses say also affected Argentina's capital.

The main airport, Arturo Merino Benitez, Santiago, has been closed after suffering damage, as the fall of a footbridge and a vehicular access ramp.

There are no departures or arrivals at this airport and TV Chile mentioned that the flights may have been diverted to other airports in Chile and the neighboring city of Mendoza in Argentina.

10:50 announced more than 100 deaths so far.

In Santiago, Chile, apartment balconies and had lost some plants were wrapped in fire, electricity and telephone lines were cut, local media reported. The movement also collapsed buildings in the resort of Vina del Mar.

That's terrible. ): God bless. I mean, first Haiti, now this? They happened so close together, it's kind of alarming. And the tsunami part, damn. I hate natural disasters.
