how are you going with the kanji? I'm having trouble just remembering all the hiragana and katakana quickly enough to read.

hello snow-san
i just found this place yesterday when i browsed some informations about japan

i dunno if it is okay to post this comment here
so, feel free to remove this post if it is violating this thread :)

actually, i plan to visit japan next year
but i have no idea where to go & what to visit there
not to mention, i can only speak some japanese words & know nothing about hiragana, moreover kanji
so i m doing some researches & here i am

i read your "tokyo-kyoto", "nagoya / dazaifu tenmangu shrine / mount aso" & "okinawa"
they really are a big help
saikouuuu!!
thank you very much for all the informations
at least now i have some ideas about what place to visit there

i wonder if you have any information about other cities like osaka, yokohama, hakone, shizuoka, kobe, nara & sapporo? :)
i'd like to visit tht cities too, but have no idea about tht places
of course i always can search in the inet, but your articles are so detailed & easy to understand
if it is not a bother, i really hope you can help me
thanks in advance

mchan!!

that's great you'll b visiting japan next year!!
hiragana/katakana won't take u long 2 learn. kanji's a whole nother ballgame. i study it in my free time and i know it'll b years b4 i get 2 some halfway acceptable level. kanji is a history thing. the only thing i see about it, is it saves space. i find there r more strokes in writing kanji vs. hiragana/katakana meaning...it's more work!
now get this. when using the pc, u type everything in romaji ~ hiragana, then hit the space bar 2 convert it 2 the appropriate kanji.
makes me laugh. it's no different then saying why don't we just get rid of either lower or uppercase in the english language. i mean we could, but it's all history. kanji really should b eliminated. anyway...that's my 2cents.

unless, u plan 2 live in japan 4 some time or just simply want 2 learn the writing...i'd probably focus more on just some simple conversational words ~ phrases.

opinions vary. with tokyo, i enjoyed Asakusa (fashionable shopping around the area too), the view from Tokyo Tower was really nice (but now keep in mind - the new Tokyo Skytree!). i haven't been 2 the Shinjuku ~ Shibuya area but from the pics ~ looks like hustling bustling fun? area Akihabara didn't do anything 4 me. unless you're into electronics ~ anime???
haven't been 2 the other areas except Ueno Zoo i know, i know. i just hadn't been 2 the zoo in a long time.

the Odaiba area looks interesting. that might b worth checking out.

on 2 kyoto. i enjoyed kyoto. beautiful place. Kiyomizu-dera is worth checking out. the street that heads up 2 it is lined on both sides with small shops. kiyomizu is filled with good walking paths. Kinkakuji - wat u c in that pic is wat u get. it's pretty much that and nothing more. makes 4 a nice postcard like shot.
Nijo Castle is alright. it's a nice enough walk.

on 2 nagoya. the castle is what u c. i went up and don't recall it being that big a deal. every floor is a museum.
Osu Kannon Temple is worth checking out because it's settled in among one of two big shopping areas in nagoya. plenty nice clothing stores, cafes, restaurants.
u c the places i visited marked with the asterisk *, so i can't comment on 2 many places in nagoya.

dazaifu was really nice. really enjoyed it. i didn't get out enough while in fukuoka.
mount aso's not worth mentioning. pass.

i did these topics when i had more free time and time 2 kill. gomen but don't c doin anymore anytime soon. probably not unless i hit mainland japan again. i think i'll just say the heck with any homework...pick a place i haven't been b4 & let's go!!

tokyo & kyoto r the obvious hot spots. hustle and bustle of the streetlife vs. natures beauty. if/when i visit the mainland again, i want 2 visit places i haven't been 2. several of those u mentioned, r those mentioned by people i've asked.

if u like the water, okinawa is surrounded by beautiful beaches.

even hiragana looks difficult for me
maybe i should take some lessons before i go next year
at least i have 9 months to learn, lol

thanks to your advices, tokyo - kyoto - nagoya are "must go" place & definitely on the list
for other cities, i m still doing some researches & would love to get any advices/tips :)
okinawa is tempting, but it seems tht the flights are pretty full
even if i decide to go, i dunno if i can get the plane ticket to go there

i hope you can travel again soon
i'd love to read your travel stories
they are all very interesting

alrighty. so i was at one me fav clothing shops talkin 2 couple the girlz there.
yoko said since the kanji characters can mean whole words...they just tend to pop out at u making things easier faster 2 read. ok. makes sense.

but as i still think about it. the writing part is still? more work. so though the reading part comes easier, it still appears to b more work on the writing side.

anyway... i'm still learnin' so...
