Hello, I would like to inquire if possible the use Crunchy Roll for an Anime Appreciation Society. Currently i have a premium membership, and would like to use Crunchy Roll to show One or more Anime once a week to a group of 15 to 20 people. Normally we would buy a DVD, then Request permission from the licensor. We have not selected a title for viewing yet, but would like inquire if we need permission from either Crunchy Roll, or whom it may concern.

Someone actually asked a similar question like this in the past, but showing content off the site to a group, like the way you describe, is already considered a "public broadcast", which is explicitly stated in the CrunchyRoll Terms of Service under section (i) of Proprietary Rights and Licenses:

(i) Crunchyroll and its licensors own all right, title and interest, including all worldwide intellectual property rights in the Site, Services, Crunchyroll Content and any other content made available through the Site or Services contained therein, other than your User Submissions. You will not remove, alter or conceal any copyright, trademark, service mark or other proprietary rights notices incorporated in or accompanying the Site, Services, Crunchyroll Content, any other content made available through the Site or Services or related products and services, and except as explicitly described herein, you will not reproduce, modify, adapt, prepare derivative works based on, perform, display, publish, distribute, transmit, broadcast, sell, license or otherwise exploit the Site, Services, Crunchyroll Content or any other content made available through the Site or Services (other than your User Submissions).

The section on Copyrighted Materials also further shows restrictions in public display of content on CR:

You will not use the Site or Services to offer, display, distribute, transmit, route, provide connections to or store any material that infringes copyrighted works or otherwise violates or promotes the violation of the intellectual property rights of any third party. Crunchyroll has adopted and implemented a policy that provides for the termination in appropriate circumstances of the accounts of users who repeatedly infringe or are believed to be or are charged with repeatedly infringing the rights of copyright holders.

In short, I believe public broadcasts are a violation of the Crunchroll TOS. However, I think it would be more appropriate for you to approach the administration directly, such as sending them an email to [email protected]. Additional contact details can be found here.

If you were to ask me, however, CR does not necessarily own the content it offers, here on the site; rather, CR is a distribution channel, while the content and its copyrights are retained by their respective licensers. In the end, you'll have to go back to the same licensers as you used to when you requested public display of DVD movies and the like. Still, I don't think it hurts in trying to ask CR through the aforementioned contacts. Good luck with that.

Streaming non-premium content with the ads showing to a group of people is alright but you'll need to work something out with us in order to stream premium content to a group of people. If you would like to contact someone about this, you should email [email protected] though I'm not sure if we have a system set up for it yet.

Forgive me bumping an older thread but I seen a lot of anime clubs obtaining permission to use Crunchyroll for their club viewings. Is it a requirement that it has to be linked within a school or can I start one at a local comic book store?

It doesn't have to be tied to a school but I'm not exactly sure what the requirements are. So you'll have to email us and the appropriate people will tell you how it works.
