6.6 Earthquake hits Japan
Posted 3/14/10 , edited 3/14/10

TOKYO -- A strong magnitude 6.6 earthquake hit off the eastern coast of Japan on Sunday, rattling buildings across a broad swath of the country, including the crowded capital.

There were no reports of casualties, with only light damage to structures near the epicenter, according to local officials. The quake hit at 5:08 p.m. and was felt most strongly in central Fukushima prefecture about 130 miles (210 kilometers) northeast of Tokyo, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

“It was fairly strong, but didn't knock over anything in the office,” said Ken Yoshida, a town official in Naraha, one of the hardest-hit areas. He said an earthen wall in town was partially toppled.

The earthquake was centered about 50 miles (80 kilometers) off the eastern coast at a depth of about 25 miles (40 kilometers), the meteorological agency said.

The government said there was no danger of a tsunami, although slight changes to ocean levels were a possibility in some areas.

It was strong enough to gently sway large buildings in Tokyo and was felt across a broad stretch of Japan's main Honshu and northern Hokkaido islands.

Japan's early warning system predicted the earthquake just before it hit, with public broadcaster NHK interrupting a sumo match to warn residents to take cover.

The country is one of the world's most earthquake-prone countries. In 1995, a magnitude-7.2 quake in the western port city of Kobe killed 6,400 people.

Japan Earthquake 2010 Another Big (6.6) Quake Affects Island. There is another earthquake that has rocked the Pacific area. Japan experienced a 6.6 earthquake on March 14, 2010. The event unfolds just weeks after Chile’s mega quake, and shows that the tectonic plate movement has continued.

Japan had a 7.0 earthquake off her coast on February 26, 2010 – just one day before the Chile quake. That quake unfolded without event – because it happened underwater and did not cause a tsunami. There were no casualties and no damage done.

Today’s 6.6 quake rattled buildings in Tokyo, but the reports of damage and casualties have yet to be released. The Associated Press reports only light structural damage near the epicenter.

Japan has state-of-the-art earthquake alert system that warned the country just before the quake hit. In 1995, a 7.2 quake near Kobe killed 6,400 people.

There’s currently not an alert for Tsunami but authorities are monitoring the situation.

Japan isn’t the only country to be affected by earthquakes today. Indonesia also was the recipient of an earthquake, registereing at 6.4 on the Richter Scale.

In addition to Japan, Indonesia, and Chile other recipients of recent quakes include Haiti, Turkey, Hawaii, Oklahoma, California, and other countries within the Latin American region. Everyone is holding their breath hoping that the quakes don’t continue.

There have been a lot of earthquakes lately, luckily there hasn't been any casualties yet.
I'd be totally scared if the downtown buildings started swaying.
Damn soo many earthquakes/natural disasters lately.

I hope you don't actually believe that. An earthquake in an area that is prone to lots of earthquakes (due to sitting on the edge of two tectonic plates) is hardly a sign of the end of the world.
