AGENT ORANGE-Agent Orange and "Super Orange" were the nicknames given to a herbicide and defoliant used by the United States Armed Forces in its Herbicidal Warfare program during the Vietnam War.

Agent Orange was used from 1961 to 1971 and was by far the most used of the so-called "Rainbow Herbicides" utilized during the program. Degradation of Agent Orange (as well as Agents Purple, Pink, and Green) released dioxins, which have caused health problems for those exposed during the Vietnam War. Agents Blue and White were part of the same program but did not contain dioxins.

Studies of populations highly exposed to dioxin, though not necessarily Agent Orange, indicate increased risk of various types of cancer and genetic defects; the effect of long-term low-level exposure has not been established.

Since the 1980s, several lawsuits have been filed against the companies who produced Agent Orange, among them Dow Chemical, Monsanto and Diamond Shamrock (which produced 5%[1]). U.S. veterans obtained a $180 million settlement in 1984, with most affected veterans receiving a one-time lump sum payment of $1,200. American veterans of the Vietnam War were seeking recognition of Agent Orange, compensation and treatment for maladies that they and their children suffered from; many exposed to Agent Orange have not been able to receive promised medical care through the Veterans Administration medical system, and only with rare exception have their affected children received healthcare assistance from the government. Vietnam veterans and their families who brought the original Agent Orange lawsuit stated 25 years ago that the government "is just waiting for us all to die". They alleged that most of those still alive will succumb to the effects of toxic exposure over the next several years, before age 65. Elsewhere, Australian, Canadian and New Zealand veterans obtained compensation in settlements that same year. In 1999, South Korean veterans filed a lawsuit in Korea; in January 2006, the Korean Appeal Court ordered Monsanto and Dow to pay US$62 million in compensation. However, no Vietnamese have received compensation, and on March 10, 2005 Judge Jack Wei
nstein of Brooklyn Federal Court dismissed the lawsuit filed by the Vietnamese victims of Agent Orange against the chemical companies that produced the defoliants/herbicides. - wikipedia

Basically, we were in their to end the communism. In other words we go hey, we have the strongest army in the world so we can't lose. The vietnamese people said OK! We shall fight beside each other but please without you, we will perish. Americans and Non-communist Vietnamese fought. The democrats in America didn't want to go to this war. So through TV, radio, etc., started to turn America against the war. The democrats than DEFUNDED our military so much, that we eventually had to pull out. Just as they are attempting to do for our soldiers in Iraq. After the American military was pulled out of Vietnam, many Vietnamese people who we said we would protect, were slaughtered. My grandmother had a brother in that war, when he left and came home he thought he was goingto get a "heroes welcome" for fighting in the war. He was spat on. This pissed me off so bad,.

I can't say it was good or bad:
North Vietnam was full of communists, South Vietnam had a corrupt government; both were supported by the USA or the Sovjets, it was a kind of battlefield, just like Afghanistan...I think neither the US nor the Sovjets really cared about the people living there, so it became a big slaughter...sad but reality...

Edit:
@vangstr4life: one question: do you know about the people in north vietnam who where killed by the communists just because they didn't follow the ideology? the north suffered as well, the "war" was fought by either fanatics or ignorant guys!

this war wasn't declared as such, true...but it was illegal because of this fact. the president sent troops to vietnam without a declaration (the soldiers fought and died; so it was a war): he ignored the constitution which says you need a declaration of war to fight against or for another country (i don't remember this precisely, but that's what it roughly says)

America didn't declare war on Vietnam so its actually a "conflict" but whatever. The whole thing was an absolute mess and it just ruined all of Southeast Asia. It weakened neighboring countries and weapons were giving to those countries by the US. Government overthrows, genocide, corruption, civil war, etc all happened. And to this day they're still recovering from the effects (landmines, residual resistance groups, corruption, etc).

This is how it goes. Vietnam having their civil war going on. American butt in and then it became a thing where oh we needs to save our people from the Vietnamese people. Sent in more troop. Then goes like we need help getting out of Vietnam so get people who is not Vietnamese to lead us out of that country cause they know the land. And how after American left Vietnam everyone who helped US troop got slaughter including family and kid. Just look at US now with there troop in Iraq. Are they focusing on caughting that guy. Nope, pretty much they are after the oil. hahaaaa..... This is the truth pretty much. Well Vietnam war is noe like Iraq/Afghanistan. Only different is Vietnam=Jungle and forest. Iraq/Afghanistan=desert/poor housings

America and South Vietnam were winning the war, they had completely destroyed North Vietnam's hopes for winning. Until the government decided to defund the military and pull them out of Vietnam. They set up a plan where South Vietnam were to defend themselves against the North. That plan did not work out at all, and many South Vietnamese people were slaughtered. American soldiers came home and were spit on by the people. What a great way to respect your soldiers who just went to hell and back yeah?

Well, we lost because we did not have a clear set of goals. We did not have the equipment, intelligence, nor the proper doctrine for invading Vietnam. Their warfare and use of supply lines was excellent. They had support from China, Soviet Union, and probably Cambodia. Jungles and Forests are horrible places to fight a war. However, we have learned from this and have improved our methods. Air power no longer uses carpet bombing, but precision targeting. We have technology that could probably map out the tunnels. We have learned many valuable lessons from this conflict. It is because of these lessons that we are even stronger today.
