Jeon Ji-hyun turns down Runaway

As soon as Rain confirmed his drama comeback in Runaway (the next project from Chuno’s writer-director team), speculation arose about who would be cast as his leading lady, and Jeon Ji-hyun’s name rose to the top of lists as a likely prospect. However, a source with her management company, Sidus HQ, has now stated that Jeon has declined the offer.

Now Lee Na-young’s name is being discussed as a top possibility, which was confirmed by her management, BOF, who stated on June 3 that although no decision has been made, they are looking favorably at the prospect. If she accepts, this would be Lee’s second time working with writer Chun Sung-il; Chun is the head of Harimao Pictures, which produced her recent film Dad Likes Women, a heartwarming family comedy in which she played a transgender character. (The character fathered a child while a man, but doesn’t know of the child’s existence until he comes knocking on her door, only to find that Dad is now a woman.) It would also be her first television drama role since Ireland in 2004, which she did after making a splash in the huge mania hit Ruler of Your Own World in 2002.

Runaway is planned for a late-September or early-October broadcast, which means that producers are in a hurry to lock down casting and begin filming soon.

Rain And Lee Na Young To Star In Drama

Korean super star Rain is set to come back to the small screen this fall alongside Lee Na Young in the KBS2 drama tentatively titled “Fugitive.” The drama is slated to be a romantic comedy with lots of detective-work action.

Unexpectedly, pictures were released for the drama today showing Lee Na Young and Rain in a nighttime setting wearing dark-colored clothes. The production team behind the drama stated that filming was conducted in secrecy to allow them both to concentrate completely on their acting. Lee Na Young’s character is supposed to be appealing to men because of her “pure and innocent” image. Rain, on the other hand, portrays a character with a happy and cheerful image. His character is supposed to be involved in an unsolved case.

Though it was their first filming for the new drama, both actors seemed at ease with each other. They were playful, energetic, and enthusiastic.

“Fugitive” will air on KBS2 this fall. Other filming locations include Hong Kong, Tokyo, Osaka, Yokohama, Beijing, Macau, Thailand, Shanghai, and so forth

Lee Na-young confirmed for Runaway with Rain

Lee Na-young has been finalized as Rain’s co-star in the action-spy drama Runaway, which makes it her first drama in six years (since 2004’s Ireland). Having played quirky characters in the past (and a transgender role in her most recent movie, Dad Likes Women), this drama will give her a chance to showcase a completely different image from her previous roles.

Lee stars as Jin-yi, who approaches main character Ji-woo (Rain) under false pretenses. In order to get close to her objective, she becomes entangled with Ji-woo, and afterward the two must lie to each other repeatedly to cover up their real motives. Naturally, he ends up falling for her in this “unique romance.” Jin-yi is a woman who appears innocent on the outside, but possesses a sexy charm and has a “cat-like” quality as she keeps her true intentions hidden.

According to Lee’s reps at KeyEast, she chose the role because “It stands out with its high-quality script and a female lead character who has a fresh appeal that hasn’t been seen before. After talking with producers recently and hearing that it would be a ‘well-made’ [high production value] drama, I’m really looking forward to it.”

Lee Na-young has already worked with writer Chun Sung-il in Dad Likes Women, and this project reteams Chun with director Kwak Jung-hwan of Chuno. The story actually sounds pretty familiar — it recalls Chun’s previous action-spy movie Level 7 Civil Servant, which by the way is ALSO getting a drama adaptation.

The drama will take place in a number of Asian cities, requiring location shoots in Busan, Tokyo, Osaka, Yokohama, Shanghai, Macau, and Hong Kong. Runaway will begin filming in mid-June. It is planning for a late-September premiere on KBS.

Lee Jung-jin cast as Rain’s rival in Runaway

Rain now has his rival for the upcoming spy-melodrama Runaway, and it’s 32-year-old Lee Jung-jin (of I Love You Don’t Cry and Bottom of the 9th Inning with 2 Outs).

Also, we finally get more on the story of Runaway, which centers around an “astronomical sum of money that disappeared with the outbreak of the Korean War, which resurfaces sixty years later in 2010.” What follows is “a lively chase” that takes the characters through various Asian cities.

The two characters played by Rain and Lee Na-young, Ji-woo and Jin-yi, are involved in this case but acting independently of each other. (She approaches him to use him, but the romance that develops between the two is an unexpected development.) Lee Jung-jin plays the chief of investigation who finds the case suspicious and pursues Ji-woo, leading to close confrontations between the two.

Lee Jung-jin said, “I’m definitely blessed to be participating in such well-made projects like my recent movie The Fixer and the drama Runaway. Viewers will have big expectations, and I want to leave them with a strong impression.”

Runaway just began filming this week and will air later this year.

Lee Na-young flexes her action muscles in Runaway

With its cast in place, the drama Runaway is getting busy with production, and Lee Na-young makes the transition to action star. These latest stills show the actress escaping from a high-rise building; Lee plays “Jin-yi,” a mysterious woman who looks innocent on the outside but hides her real motives for getting close to “Ji-woo” (Rain), whom she approaches with the intent to manipulate. Romance complicates matters. So do the pursuers on their tail.

One source said, “Lee Na-young spent several hours suspended in mid-air while filming. She threw herself into the shoot whole-heartedly, and although it was a difficult situation, she managed not to lose her smile throughout it.”

The all-star cast also features Daniel Henney as Lee Na-young’s protector, while Lee Jung-jin and Yoon Jin-seo are the officers in pursuit of the two leads. The plot kicks off when a huge sum of money makes a reappearance after being hidden for sixty years, ever since it disappeared during the Korean War.

The drama takes the actors through multiple Asian metropolises — Seoul, Busan, Shanghai, Beijing, Macau, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Osaka, and Yokohama. It premieres at the end of September on KBS.

Uehara Takako romances Rain in Runaway

To correspond with its foreign locales, KBS’s Runaway is also bringing onboard some name foreign actors, such as Japanese singer Uehara Takako, who will have a romantic loveline with Rain. She’ll play a top singer named Kieko who shares a “sad love” with his character.

In the ’90s, Uehara was a member of girl group Speed while she was just a young teen; the group disbanded in 2000 when she was 17, after which she went solo. Among other things, she appeared in the Japanese drama Koi no kara Sawagi (Much Ado About Love) Drama Special, which also featured Ryu Shi-won (Style).

Meanwhile, another well-known Japanese actor has been cast to play her father, a powerful figure in the yakuza underworld: Takenaka Naoto, whose projects include Tokyo Tower and Nodame Cantabile.

The drama, which airs in late September, has been beefing up its ranks with a solid cast that includes the likes of Lee Na-young, Lee Jung-jin, Daniel Henney, Yoon Jin-seo, Sung Dong-il, Jo Hee-bong, and Gong Hyung-jin. Let’s hope its story can keep up.

Yoon Son-ha cast as femme fatale in Runaway

KBS’s action drama Runaway sure is letting loose with its casting news. Next up: actress Yoon Son-ha faces off as Lee Na-young’s rival in a femme fatale role.

Initially, her character Mi-jin tries to approach Jin-yi (Lee Na-young) in order to kill her, as part of covering up her own past. However, in the process of doing so, she gets entangled with private eye Ji-woo (Rain) and Kai (Daniel Henney).

Yoon Son-ha received recognition for her acting in early projects Did We Really Love? and Snowflakes, and last took on a drama series with 2007’s Oh Lovers. Being fluent in Japanese, she also rose to popularity after acting in Japanese dramas, though she hasn’t acted in either Korea or Japan in the past few years.

Of her role, Yoon said, “I’ll be putting my innocent, pure image behind me and transforming into a femme fatale, so I hope you’ll look forward to it.”

Runaway will premiere on KBS in September.
