I really think that nowadays, fantasy stories are becoming popular. Comedy, though, has kept its audience since day one and has already planted its roots in the literature society. It has a growing audience. Drama, i believe is going to be going low this time around. The world is becoming less happy and more sorrowfull (with all the earthquakes, storms, hurricanes, crash in the stock market, unemplorment) people will put up a barrier between the real and the imagination. It is a humans natural instict to put up its guard when threatened. And so, instead of reading dramas, they will choose to ignore all the bad and focus on the good.

I don't know about adventure since I am not a big fan. But please, if you are, comment about it.
I am not a proffesionals analyst so all my reviews should not be deemed as the whole truth.
It is only my opinion.

As far as YA goes:

I know urban fantasy is currently quite popular with teenagers- vampires, werewolves, supernatural powers, that kind of thing. Books like Twilight and Harry Potter are obviously at the head of this fad. A few other big-name authors in this genre are PC Cast and Kristin Cast, James Patterson, and Melissa Marr.

Chick lit still seems to be popular with the teenage crowd, too: Meg Cabot and Sarah Dessen spring immediately to mind.

Not sure how the action/adventure genre is doing... I think Michael Grant's Gone and Suzanne Collins's The Hunger Games would qualify, and they're both bestsellers. I also adored Eoin Colfer's Airman although I don't think it was as successful.

Actually, mentioning Gone and The Hunger Games reminds me that post-Apocalyptic-type books seem to be popular these days as well.

Flippin' vampires. I used to like them fine, but it's gotten to the point where the fantasy/science fiction shelves are half full of bleedin' vampire and werewolf stories. It's been done to death and there's no end in sight. Enough already!
