Random facts about mathematics
Posted 3/24/10
I bet many have heard of the tragic love stories about mathematics before, now for those who have no idea what I'm talking about, here you go!

Tangent lines -
who had one chance to meet and then parted forever.
Parallel lines - who were never meant to meet.
Asymptotes - who can get closer and closer but will never be together.

See, math can be fun at times!

Anyone knows any other interesting facts about mathematics? Or should I ask, anyone loves mathematics like I do?

Math is a tool, it's something you have no choice in learning, no matter how mind-numbing, pencil biting, calculator banging, textbook throwing, random cursing, chocolate nibbling it is. I despise and refute it with all my being, but everywhere I go, math will be apart of my life...forever.

But either way, those were some interesting facts to know. Maybe next time when I look at parallel lines I will not cringe, but laugh a little, and what the heck are Asymptotes? I haven't learned those yet.

Perpendicular lines - Met and are now stuck with each other forever in a hate-hate relationship because the their slope is at -1.

Slope - Mathematics's limp wiener.

Hey... this IS fun. (:

Random facts about math?

142857 is a magic number.

142857 * 1 = 142857 (Unrotated)
142857 * 2 = 285714 (Rotated twice left)
142857 * 3 = 428571 (Rotated once left)
142857 * 4 = 571428 (Rotated twice right)
142857 * 5 = 714285 (Rotated once right)
142857 * 6 = 857142 (Rotated thrice)
142857 * 7 = 999999 (Just six nines)

142857 * 8 = 1142856 (Take the unrotated, then subtract 1 and prefix it)
142857 * 9 = 1285713 (Take the rotated twice left, then subtract 1 and prefix it)
142857 * 10 = 1428570 (Take the rotated once left, then subtract 1 and prefix it)
142857 * 11 = 1571427 (Take the rotated twice right, then subtract 1 and prefix it)
142857 * 12 = 1714284 (Take the rotated once right, then subtract 1 and prefix it)
142857 * 13 = 1857141 (Take the rotated thrice, then subtract 1 and prefix it)
142857 * 14 = 1999998 (Take the six nines, then subtract 1 and prefix it)

142857 * 15 = 2142855 (Take the unrotated, then subtract 2 and prefix it)
142857 * 16 = 2285712 (Take the rotated twice left, then subtract 2 and prefix it)
142857 * 17 = 2428569 (Take the rotated once left, then subtract 2 and prefix it)
142857 * 18 = 2571426 (Take the rotated twice right, then subtract 2 and prefix it)
142857 * 19 = 2714283 (Take the rotated one right, then subtract 2 and prefix it)
142857 * 20 = 2857140 (Take the rotated thrice, then subtract 2 and prefix it)
142857 * 21 = 2999997 (Take the six nines, then subtract 2 and prefix it)

And so on. This number repeats infinitely in the reciprocal of 7:
1 / 7 = 0.142857142857142857...

If you forget the number, you can find it by dividing 1 by 7 on paper:
....0.142857142857142857....
7 | 1.00000000000000000000
......-7
.......30
......-28
.........and so on

And that was a totally random fact about math.

Edit: Removed additional information that was partially incorrect.

the line that separates a fraction is called a vinculum

also ho
w to order the numbers 1- 9 in a 3x3 square to equal 15 in every way is like this
| 8| 1| 6|
| 3| 5| 7|
| 4| 9| 2|

add them diagonally, horizontal, or vertical and they all equal to 15

What? What? Math tales? I don't know any sad romances, but I do know that...

Some old horses can always hear their owner approach.

That's kind of cute.

I remember one of math teacher told my class and I how to do an algebra problem in order with this saying:

Please (first do the math inside the parentheses)
Excuse (second do the exponents)
My (third do the multiplications)
Dear (fourth do the divisions)
Aunt (fifth do the additions)
Sylvania (last do the subtractions)

Eso (esponentes)
Me (multiplicaciones)
Dicen (divisiones)
Super (sumas)
Robot (restas)

I took Spanish a while ago, and all I remember is these phrase como estas, muy bien, donde estas, perro, porque, mucho gusta, amor, and other simple phrase. ^ o ^ One of my favorite singer is Chayanne for his song, Yo Te Amo. I heard it from Meteor Garden, a Taiwanese drama show. The main characters was visiting Spain, and this song was playing, and I just love this song.
