I wonder if there are any anime in which the future earth is actually cleaner than the one today? Why must the environment always be destroyed or polluted? In both Planates and Aria earth's oceans are said to be unswimable, on Soranowoto all oceanic marine life has perished; in the Aria universe, man is able to create a pristine world - yet somehow is unable to clean up earth? People like living in an ecologically destroyed world??

It would be nice to see more positive environmental messages in anime. We are always told what we do wrong - never what we do (or learn to do) right. People save animals caught in (non man-made) fires, clean up messes left by our ancestors (who didn't know any better in many cases), and use our technology to live a higher standard of living with less environmental strain than at any time in human history; it is developing (or undeveloped) nations who actually cause more of a mess. Give us at least a little credit in your utopian futures!

What animes have positive environmental messages - messages that don't demonize mankind as a destroyer of all that is "green and holy"? In my opinion, the earth is better because we are here.

I guess "This Ugly Yet Beautiful World" could be considered an environmental anime since it deals with the subject of species extinction.

Saw it, hated it; calling the heroine an idiot for not instantly grasping esoteric truths and the destruction of Tokyo for no purpose are all that happen in this stinker that makes "Sinners in the Hand of an Angry God" pale in preachiness comparison.

This has the distinction of being the only short (i.e, less than 200 episode) anime I started but purposely never finished.

What I was looking for was environmentally themed anime (even if only in a 2 second reference) that portrayed mankind in a positive light. Arjuna's solution is for us to live like cavemen or indians (contrary to popular belief they devastated their environment). Although we can always improve, I think we deserve a little credit for trying to understand and take better care of the world we live in.

Shangri-La is another example of the genre. And some of Miyazaki's films.
