Jyu-Oh-Sei (1993), Planet of the Beast King
Sci-fi, Romance, Drama,
Key Words: Twins, Stranded, planets, fighting,
American Licensed Publisher:

Book Volumes: 5

Thor and Rai are twin brothers who live on the Colony ship 'Juno'. There parents are some of the best Scientists in the solar system Vulcan and so the children are thought to become scientists as well. This all changes one day when their parents are murdered and they are sent to the harsh forsaken planet of Kimaera, the planet of the beast king. The planet is harsh and the people harsher as the twins find out, they kill to survive and get what they need. Thor learns fast that his life will be much easier if he looks after himself then his brother as well since he is the strongest but when Rai dies, he is filled with regret. Now he must fight, for himself and for the thought of his brother to get out of Kimaera and set his revenge on those who killed his parents and left the twins to die in this forsaken dump.

My Thoughts: I didn't really like it much, mostly for how strange the artwork is. This book seemed to have a lot of scientific things in it that made it hard for me to understand. They also thrust you into the story right away without building up any real reason why things are happening. It leaves me with a strange feeling that I am still not getting enough of the story. Another thing that bothered me was how useless the author made Rai. I know he is the youngest and the less of the two brothers but he should of had some use being the smartest. The tension between Thor and Rai makes things a little hard for me to understand since they seemed so close on the ship. Even the point where Thor almost kills Rai made me go 'WHAT THE FUCK?' I mean, sure he may be a whiner and a weakling but to try to kill your own brother? Ya... my thought is that I might not read the rest of the volumes in this.

Freaks of the Heartland (2004)
Horror, Sci-fi, Drama, American Comic,
Key Words: Deformed, Super Humans, Southern,

Book Volumes: Continuing

In the town down in the Gristlewood Valley, many strange children have been born, mutated and strange. Trevor Owen is the older bother of one of them and while he himself is fine, his brother, Will, is larger then he is and is very deformed. Even the 6 year old doesn't know what he is but he knows that he's not alone even before he was told. When one of the other children kill a pig, that's the last straw for Trever's drunk father and he ends up getting ready to kill Will. Trevor quickly goes against him and takes Will away, but where to for a 'freak' like him?

My Thoughts: I fell in love with the story, it’s rather beautiful. The artwork, though rough, keeps the grunge and darkness that the story needs. The muted tones do give it the southern feel as well as the language that is spoken with the un-educated shortening words. The action scenes are really crazy, flashing on the pages without rhyme or reason and then are explained later on. I am always surprised at the love that Trevor shows Will, even though he grew up with everyone freaking out about these children, he tries to help Will by giving him a friend, a actual loving brother. It is one to read if you like a heart wrenching story.

Salem Brownstone: All Along the Watchtowers(2009)
Author: John Harris Dunning
Horror, Fantasy, American Comic,
Key Words: Gothic, Surreal, Spiritual,
Originated: America
American Publisher: Walker Books

Book Volume: 1

Salem O. Brownstone Esquire never really knew his father after he left when he was 6. Threw the years, he had become successful in all that he did, mostly out of trying to outdo him but never got any contact from him. That's why he was surprised to get a telegram telling him of his father's death and to come and possess his house and things. Upon getting to the house, he meets the charming Cassandra Contortionist, a circus freak and friend of his fathers. She gives him a Serying ball that was his father's most treasured object but dark creatures are out to own the orb. Can he protect it and take over his father's plans before the darkness fills the world?

My Thoughts: I actually liked it though it reminded me of images I have seen from XXXHolic. Characters are long limed and hair flows unnaturally around the characters face most of the time. It is very surreal and all the images seem to move around you, not really any place with straight lines. Things are really dark, not many panels have been left with white parts. It gives the characters a very hunting feeling. The only real place there is light is in the astral plain where they seem to show more of the light surrounding the character.

Everything has a really heavy inking, and lots of the images have crosshatching and detailing, though none of it really looks like it had half tones. It is all done by pen and ink showing how much time the author put into her art. The only things that don't have much are the characters whom are rather pasty faced and seem to jump off the page. There is a lot of close ups to lips and eyes when they start talking, making everything feel important. It feels a lot like a Greatful Dead poster and seems like something that would be good if on a stoner dream.

The story line sadly is much to be desired. It thrusts Salem into the story without really giving any info as to what the heck he is even going to his father’s house. If he seems to hate his father so much, then why go there? And why would he care about anything about his father in the first place? If I was him, I would have just thrown the letter away. Another problem is that he always seems to have a stuck eyebrow, always looking like a stalker or pervert when he looks at anyone. And it’s not both, it’s just this one eye.

Elfquest (1978)
Fantasy, Scifi,

On Abode, a planet much like earth with two moons, a race of elves live in small communities. They are descended from advanced aliens called the High Ones. When the High Ones planet was overpopulated do to them never dieing of old age, they left to find a new world to live on. When they landed on Abode, there bodies changed and became smaller, and they ajusted to the world but still, many humans believed them as devils and wish to kill them off.

My Thoughts: It's hard for me to understand the whole story but the whole thing is rather pretty. My Favorite stories are the ones with Ember, when she became chief. I Love the story lines.

Kobato. (2005 - 2011), こばと。
Author: CLAMP
Comedy, Romance,
Key Words: Magical Girl, Spirits, Talking stuffed animals,
American Publisher: Yen Press

Book Volumes: 6

Kobato Hanato has one wish, there is a special place she wants to go. To do this, she must earn a bottle to collect broken hearts and fill the bottle up to get her wish. She can not do two special things; she can't take off her hat, and she cannot fall in love. Unfortunately, she has fallen in love with a man named Fujimoto and now must decide, give up her wish and be with him, or never see him again and have her wish.

My Thoughts: Ok... I will say this about Clamp, the artwork is beautiful. The characters are highly detailed and the costume work very lively ad visually appealing. Ioryogi-San is pretty cute as a little stuffed dog though he looks dangerous when he's angry though he is like that almost all the time. I liked the idea of the story, but not the way it was put down. It started out so slow, made even slower by the stupidity of Kobato. I wonder where the hell she used to live because it seems like she is not from Japan. In Fact, it doesn't give any history behind her. She is just... there. One bone I have to pick with Clamp is that a lot of the characters look exactly the same as others in other series they did. And the manager of the apartments is named Chitose Mihara... close to Chitose Hibiya who is the landlady of the apartments in Chobits... COME ON CLAMP! WHAT ARE YOU DOING? Is Mihara her maiden name? Is this her grandmother? I don't see any characters with big ears... and there are two girls, Chiho and Chise, that look like Chi and are the daughters of the landlady, there is the bake shop with the same people as chobits, and so on… ugg... I could not sit there and read this book without hitting my head against the wall. Where is the originality? Character designs need to be looked at more I feel, I don't want to be reading a new story with the same character of another but changed a little.

Avalon High Coronation (2005)
Romance, Fantasy
American Licensed Publisher:

Will Wagner was a average high school boy. He was the popular Student President, the quarterback of the football team, and every girl wanted him. Elaine Harrison was also a average high school girl, smart, popular even though she was new, athletic, and doing good in school. It seemed logical that she would fall for Will and he would fall in love with her, right? Well, that and the fact that Will is the reincarnation of the legendary King Arthur and she is the reincarnation of a Celtic Priestess. Will's half brother Marco hates Will and wants to kill him, just like the story. Can Arthur live threw this trial or will history repeat itself?

My Thoughts: It's pretty good, and at the end of the first book, they kind of made me hooked. The story line is slow, but it explains a lot in the first book, showing a lot of back story and so I'm not so confused. The artwork is pretty good, more of a american version of Japanese anime with a small flare of its own. I think I will keep reading it.

My Boyfriend is a Monster - Zombie (2011)
Horror, Romance, Comedy, Sci-fi, American Comic,
Key Words: Zombies, Virus, Living dead,

Dicey Bell is a normal high school baseball star who is also on the honor role. Maybe that's why it seemed strange that she fell in love with a nerd like Jack Chan who was a science freak. The two ended up forced together for a Health ED project and ended up becoming close but there first date was a disaster. A virus that Jack's parents were working on eradicating turns deadly on the human race, killing people's brains and making them flesh eating monster zombies. Can Dicey and Jack get out of St. Petersburg, Florida and safe without their relationship and lives falling to pieces?

My Thoughts: I actually liked this book and the story line. It did leave a few holes though nothing I can't live without. The artwork is amazing and has a nice detail to it even though it is pretty heavy lined. The author really got the feel just right. I felt that even though Dicey and Jack were pretty much top notch students, that they were still normal teenagers that wanted a normal life, even trying to ditch school (though they fail at it) to have a little fun. It felt like a really good Zombie survival manga, it didn't do anything out of the norm except for the zombies. If they were going after thugs or something, I would see it as a everyday life for them. I could really tell the characters personalities threw the story and though they don't really change all that much, they still have this stay strong and fight will about them. I feel they may spend a little too much time on Jack's D&D Game though; it wasn't part of the story really so it didn't really mean much.

Squish - Super Amoeba (2011)
Author: Matthew Holm
Fantasy, Sci-fi,
Key Words: Childrens, Slice of Life,
Originated: America

Book Volumes: ?

This is a book all about Squish, a single celled Amoera who likes comic books and twinkes, goes to school and fights evil in the halls, and deals with every day life. He and his best friend Pod hang out a lot.

My Thoughts:Why did I look at this again? Oh right.... ONE OF YOU REQUESTED IT! Stop requesting it now, I read the first one... now get on with your life....The artwork is blotchy, the line work is clean but just not my type of work. The story line is bland. It's like a slice of life for a kid only on micro scale. Not sure the point.

Rating: Can’t rate since it was so catered to little kids.

BabyMouse (2005)
Author: Matthew Holm
Fantasy,
Key Words: Anthro, Children,
Originated: America

Book Volumes: ?

This story follows Babymouse on her adventures.

My Thoughts: Shoot me........ oh for the love of god just shoot me...... I am not a child book lover when it's like this. Artwork is ok, though worse then Squish. Don't get me into story line..... If I have to talk about it, I will shoot myself.....

Rating: Again, can’t rate it because its for young children.

A.I. Love You (Apr 6 1994 – Aug 21, 1997), A.I. ga Tomaranai
Author: Ken Akamatsu
Sci-fi, Romance, Comedy, Harem,
Key Words: Computers, Artificial Intelligence,
American Licensed Publisher:

Book Volumes: 9

Hitoshi Kobe was always bad at things, he couldn't find a girlfriend, was rather poor, and never was a good athlete. The only thing he was ever good at was making A.I.'s or Artificial Intelligence. One of his all time favorite A.I.'s is number thirty, a rather beautiful blond with a sweet personality. He calls her Saati and she seemed to be the only one that understood him. On a stormy night, a accident happens and she becomes a real girl, with a few special powers from being a computer creation. Can she help him turn into a real man or will things just get so crazy that he will sink farther into the computer world?

My Thoughts: I actually did like this manga. The artwork is a little harsh though and its created by the same person who created Love Hina. The characters feel a little to close to the ones in Love Hina that I do get a little pissed off reading it and thinking it as a different book. It just feels like he took the same characters and put them in a new story. Most of the artwork is rather detailed and flows nicely with the panels. Each turn of the page is a treat for the eyes because of the love that was put into the pictures.

Negima! Magister Negi Magi (2003)
Action-Adventure, Romantic-Comedy, Low Fantasy, Harem,
Key Words: Magic, Slice of Life, Middle School, Vampires, Robots,

Book Volumes: Ongoing

Negi Springfield is a 10 year old prodigy who has just graduated from the Magic Academy. He wants to be a Master Wizard but sadly, he is sent to teach English in a Japanese all girls high school. All the girls like their cute new teacher except one girl. Asuna had a crush on the teacher Negi replaced. When she finds out that Negi has magical powers, all hell brakes loose and she vows to make his life a living hell.

My Thoughts: This storyline is pretty fun. The 10 year old prodigy though makes me think more about Azumanga Daioh and Pani Puni Dash!.... It's not really a new story for me and so sometimes makes me feel a bit like I am running around in circles on the story. The only thing different is that this 10 year old can use magic, even if he seems not very good at it. I do have a small problem with the fact that this is pretty much a harem manga with a 10 year old, and they make it a lot like that with almost every style of girl that could be a student. You even seem to have a robot in the class that is as a girl. And what is with all the girls getting naked and with pantie shots? Really, shoot me.... Akamatsu-manga-ka is really pushing my buttons sometimes with his stories but I like the story line so I keep reading. The details he puts into the whole book is really nice and clean, wish the same went for some of the humor. Also, the 10 year old teacher sleeping at his student's house is just really creepy.

Ultra Maniac (2001), Urutora Meniakku
Magical girl, Romantic comedy

What would happen if you found out your best friend is studying to be a witch and you were becoming her test subject? Ayu Tateishi knows exactly how that feels. From the time she met Nina Sakura, she knew she was a little off but she didn't know just how off until she found a Portable Magic PC that Nina lost. Then Nina shared her secret and wished to help Ayu to make her life easier. Sadly, all her spells seem to backfire and end up making more trouble then they are worth, and to top it all off, Ayu's crush isn't all that he seems.

My Thoughts: I love the pretty Shojo artwork they have. Each panel is wonderful and the characters feel very colorful. Nina has a really cute childlike quality to her that makes her rather fun lovable character. Not so into Ayu's really mature side though it makes a nice balance between the two. The story line is the same as others but also a bit different. Instead of transformations and waves of the wand, its a small computer that helps cast spells. I do wonder about the characters turning into guys though. It makes it feel like a Ranma show then. It was like twice that Ayu turns into one from Nina's magic.

Excel Saga (1996) Ekuseru Sāga
Comedy, Action, Parody, Science Fiction,

Two strange girls have been brought into the organization ACROSS and given the code names Excel and Hyatt. They both are comanded under Il Palazzo whos dream is to concur the world starting with the one small town. The problem is that the only two he has under him are a crazy hyperactive girl and a very sickly girl. Well he actually take over the world or will this just all be for nothing?

My Thoughts: The story is much more dark then the actual show. The comedy seems more dark humor. It has everything from people spiting up blood to little dogs on the menu. The artwork is all over the place and the story line is out of wak. I really don't care much for it.

The Plain Janes (2007)
Action, American Comic,
Key Words: Slice of life,

Book Volumes: 2

Jane was a normal girl going about her normal life until a attack on Metro City turned her around. She decided to be different, to embrace art and went so far as to dye and cut her hair. Her parents, being scared that another attack would happen, moved the whole family to Kent Waters, a small suburbia as though they would be safe. Hating the way there was no art, she decides to get the other 3 girls in her school named Jane, Jayne, and Polly Jane to help her create the club called P.L.A.I.N. (People loving Art in Neighborhoods). At night, they go out and graffiti art all over the town but not everyone loves what they are doing. Can they really bring life into the dull town without getting into trouble?

My Thoughts: I liked the idea of the story but the actual progression was rushed. The artwork is alright though kind out there. I would of liked if she picked a style and kept it that way. It did have a lot of thoughts going around in my head and was somewhat interesting to at least pick up and read. Would I actually buy the book? I really doubt it.

Samurai Deeper Kyo (1999)
Chanbara, Supernatural, romance, martial arts, action, adventure, drama

During the Battle of Sekigahara, one Samurai master swordsmen left fear in the minds of many who heard his name, Demon Eyes Kyo. Now, the former master's soul is in the body of a young medicine peddler named Mibu Kyoshiro. But Kyo won't stay quiet for long as whenever Kyoshiro is in danger, Kyo comes out to play and will kill anyone and anything in his path. For some reason, he left the Bounty Huntress Yuya Shiina live though if she ever gets off her revenge path, he would kill her on sight. Can he fight off the past and move on?

My Thoughts: The artwork is pretty, Each character is a style all there own. Personalities are also pretty good, I love the mix of Kyoshiro's perverted craziness and Yuya's satanic craziness. It works really well together. Sadly, the story line seems like Kenshin's more then a original concept. The idea of a samurai wondering around doing good now is a old story line. There really doesn't feel much like a difference in any of it.

Book Volumes: 38
