A Secret on the Lips(Mar 24, 2012), Kuchibiru ni Himitsu wo
Author: Miman
One Shot, School Life, Shoujo Ai,
Key Words: Yuri,
Magazine: Publisher: American Publisher:
Originated:

Book Volumes: 1

Mizuki loves Honoka, a secret she will never tell. She is afraid that she would lose her as a friend so she keeps her mouth shut. But what would happen if that feeling was returned?

My Thoughts: This is a cute little story but again, it lacks. I find that a lot of One Shots are pretty much the same story line over and over again that other longer manga’s do so well; the girl who loves a boy but is scared to tell him, the girl who has a secret that she can never tell, the love of two people who love each other very much, and so on. There just isn’t enough there to make it seem worth reading.

The artwork is standard for Shoujo, detailed and light pen strokes. There comes a time where this stuff just seems really flat and like any other manga out there. Still, at least it’s not really bad and you can tell the characters apart.

For this one, I think you should find another that has the same storyline but if you don’t have the time, then I guess this one shot may be your fix.

Wild Kiss(2003)
Author: Nakajo Hisaya
Comedy, Mystery, One Shot, Shounen Ai, Supernatural,

Magazine: Publisher: American Publisher:
Originated:

Book Volumes: 1

Asakawa Tomoki has been a bishoujon all his life. He finally has received the ultimate confession from Yoshida Chihiro who is also a guy, but what will it cost him?

My Thoughts: The idea of the traditional vampire is pretty much thrown out the window with this one. In fact, the only thing I see in this is the need for blood. Everything else just seems pushed to the side as a half vampire seems to need blood from only one person. The story is much longer then any of the one shots that I have been reading and so the story feels much more fleshed out. You can really feel the tension between the two until the end which feels really rushed. Just because of one little thing, the story ended up going down a star.

The artwork is pretty much all bishoujo, with beautiful men and women throughout it. Still, the only three that ever seemed fleshed out is the two main characters and Tomoki’s childhood friend who I could never tell if it was a boy or girl. Other then that, we had really no interaction with other characters that would have an actual name (Uncle does not count).

I feel they could have made it longer or at least made a sequel to the one shot that would have been really nice. Go ahead and read it though, it is good.

Vampire Kiss(2001)
Author: Shouoto Aya
Fantasy, Mature, One Shot, Romance, Shounen Ai, Supernatural,
Key Words: Vampire, Yaoi,
Magazine: Publisher: American Publisher:
Originated:

Book Volumes: 1

After moving away 8 years ago, Shuichi finds himself back in his childhood town and goes to find his old friend Kura. Strangely, there is something a bit different about him though.

My Thoughts: THIS IS TO SHORT! It started out rather well done but then it ended so abruptly that it probably shouldn’t have been done at all or should have been made more. The story is confusing and basically all I got was that a boy comes back after 8 years and tries to find his friend who says he’s a vampire but all he does is give the boy a blow job instead! Is the guy a vampire? He hasn’t shown me any reason to believe he’s not posing as a vampire to get his love back.

The artwork is actually well done and pretty much standard for any manga that is high detailed. I know I say that a lot but after reading so many manga that is pretty much the same, my score normally goes to the storyline rather then the artwork.

I did like the manga, but PLEASE MAKE IT LONGER!!! Seriously, I want to see more of this and understand what the hell is happening.

April Fool(2000)
Author: Asato Eiri
Drama, One Shot, Supernatural, Tragedy,
Key Words: Death,
Magazine: Publisher: American Publisher:
Originated:

Book Volumes: 1

Haruki’s brother Hiroki was killed when a bridge Haruki built broke and he plunged into the river. Now 5 years later, he still blames himself for Hiroki’s death.

My Thoughts: Alright, this was actually a rather cute story about a family cooping with the loss of a loved one. I actually felt a lot for this one shot, more so then many of the others. It had taste, it had class, and actually didn’t need any more to it then just what it gave us. The store line is simple and rather cleanly made giving us all the information that we need. We get a good feeling of what Haruki is going through trying to be responsible and fill the shoes of his brother but always feeling that his brother may still come back to take his place again.

The artwork is beautiful and though it still has the same style as many of the other mangas, the story seems to make the artwork feel almost out of this world beautiful. It’s hard to figure that out but it does work out.

This is one that everyone should read at least once in their life. It’s short enough that it will not take up to much time.

Nekomori(2010),Nekomori-kun no Himitsu no TobiraNekomori’s Secret Door,
Author: Tsutsumi Kakeru
Comedy, One Shot, Romance, School Life, Shoujo, Supernatural,
Key Words: True Heart,

Book Volumes: 1

Ai Nekomori has never opened up and trusted anyone before since he has a power that can see the doors of people’s hearts. Then he meets Ritsu Sengoku who says whatever is on her mind. Can a cute little tomboy open up his own heart?

My Thoughts: Well this is kind of a cute little idea for a manga even if it is a one piece. Again like Wild Kiss, this is a little longer then some of the other one shots that I have read and as such is a bit more detailed in the story. The concept of having someone who can always tell what’s on someone else’s mind is a cool concept and a little jarring if it was in real life. Some of the things that the other characters are thinking about are really funny like the teacher in the first part of the story. Ritsu is also another interesting character who seems to change right as she meets Ai but never stops being really open until later on when she sort of closed the door a bit. Still, it was cute to see a person just be honest with the person he liked. Though there are misunderstandings, it’s a nice that they are ironed out fast.

The artwork is very cute and pretty much a shoujo threw and threw. The characters are well detailed and the boy is rather girly. I don’t really mind the cutely look though it is a little over done sometimes.

Yumeko and Satoru have two very different beliefs in the supernatural. Yumeko believes in the occult while Satoru is a skeptic. But what would happen if the skeptic became part of the occult themselves?

My Thoughts: So, what are the odds that someone would be struck by lightning and die? I have no idea but it looks like Satoru was one of the few in that percentage. I could have seen him getting hit by a car, getting sick, getting killed and it would have been better then lightening. Then it gathered sort of a detective feeling in the middle and at the end, it sort of switched around. It had an interesting idea but it did fall flat slightly. The story really needs to have much more to it. It could have been a great series. Now on the other side, it does have much more of a storyline as it’s a bit longer then most and doesn’t feel like it drags on.

The art style is hard to talk about it because it has a mix of Shounen and shoujo in it. It’s interesting but sometimes a little to detailed in some areas (Especially Yumeko’s room). Other then that, it was pretty well worth it.

Sana Tsukimori is a childhood horror star who can grab anyone’s attention except her older brother.

My Thoughts: Alright, first things are first, 10 year old main character and the word Ecchi. Just think of what I was going to say here when I first read the description on Mangafox. So Sana, a horror star, wants her brother, someone who hates horror stuff, to notice her. She really loves him and even says she has been in love with him for a long time, and now we get into the part where that just sounds wrong. Not to mention the guys are perverts at when she is on set saying things like she is really cute covered in blood and want to attack her. Then we also add that it seems all men freak out and go after her when they see her /REAL/ blood. After a bit, she tries to make her brother see her blood so he would fall in love with her. Yes… that kind of story. I’m glad it ended and didn’t go any farther then that.

The artwork is kind of cute and shows the difference between horror and non-horror but Sana is way too bright. She is almost always wearing something that’s bright white and her hair is also bright white so it just makes her more ‘ghosty’ in a way.

Fukuda Akimi is a rather scientific girl who believes the strange things happening around her are just her imagination. If that was the case though, then why would the Chigaya twins who deal in the supernatural think that she is there destined bride.

My Thoughts: This is pretty much the arranged marriage from the stars storyline. She is the destined person to marry one of the twins and they take no time in telling her and freaking her the hell out! The youngest is touchy feely, doing what he wants others to do for him, showing how much he cares and so on. The oldest is a bit more stuck up, always studying, and trying to keep his brother from going crazy. The story is rather nicely fleshed out and again, this one would be a really good manga to keep going because they left the ending open. I seriously would like to see who she would actually be with and the problems she and them may face.

The artwork is standard. It’s rather good but when reading many different mangas (I count one shots) for a long time and almost all of them looking like this, it gets a bit bland.

It’s worth reading but I really wish they would pick it up again.

The Fox Lover(2012)
Author:Puyo
One Shot, Romance, School Life, Seinen, Supernatural,
Key Words: Fox girl,
Magazine: Publisher: American Publisher:
Originated:

Book Volumes: 1

A young boy transfers into a school and meets a young girl who is also a fox. The two start a relationship but how long can it last?

My Thoughts: Alright, this is Spice and Wolf if the two main characters from that were in high school and talking about looks. Both of them look like the characters and seem to talk in much the same way. The only discussion they ever have is about looks and how the fox doesn’t care what she looks like and the boy cares too much. It’s a rather bland storyline and I didn’t feel much for the characters. They just didn’t stand out.

The artwork as I said reminds me of Spice and Wolf a bit (The anime, not manga) but it is heavy on the ink. Many times, the characters are darkened. While I know that the boy is rather tanned, the rest of the world is also either in dusk or shadows when they are together. There is a lot of detail as well but it doesn’t seem to take away too much from this I guess.

XXX Kiss Mark(1996)
Author:Miyasaka Kaho
One Shot, Romance, School Life, Shoujo,
Key Words: Camera
Magazine:Shoujo Magic Publisher: American Publisher:
Originated:

Book Volumes: 1

Kumi hates guys that are pushy and flighty but when one forcibly steals her first kiss, Miyazawa Takafumi captures it on film. He blackmails her to become his model for a photo contest in order to get the film back.

My Thoughts: Fist off, XXX does not mean this is a hentai or any sexual one shot. The story is pretty much a girl doesn’t like a boy but falls for him after a bit. In this case, it consists of a boy with a camera. I’m a bit put off by how pushy both men are. They force her to kiss them or blackmail her to go out with them. I did like the idea that a camera is a way of kissing the model but other then that, it’s still a normal high school romance, plain and simple.

The artwork is rather detailed and shows almost every strand of black hair in away. I look up to those who draw like that though it still feels like every other manga out there in the style.

A normal romance with a normal artstyle means a rather bland manga. If you like this type, then go ahead and read it. It’s only going to take about 4 minutes of your life.

Love's Final Place(2004), Ren’ai Saishuuchiten
Author:Wata Nobu
Drama, One Shot, Romance, School Life, Shoujo,
Key Words: High School, Marriage life,
Magazine: Publisher: American Publisher:
Originated:

Book Volumes: 1

As a high school girl, Jyun’s mind was far from marriage when her family forced her to marry Setsuna. Now trying to get into married life, she tries her best but does her new husband not care for her?

My Thoughts: I’m sort of glad that they went a different way then just the high school romance. In this one is more of a family life style. She married the person she loved but he doesn’t show love back and the only one that does show he loves her is her old love interest who is now pretty much a bad boy. This love triangle is normal in high school life but I guess there is something more to it when the girl is actually married to another. It gives a forbidden feel to the story as well as she is torn between a younger man that likes her and the older man she loves. They never really say how old Setsuna is but I am guessing he is rather old for being the president of a company. In the end, its both predictable and also not predictable in that what they say is predictable but what they do wasn’t.

Artwork is standard. Is there more to say about it? It’s well done but looks like every other show out there.

I say go ahead and read it. It is the perfect length for the story, not dragging on to long or feeling it could be summed up in two pages. It’s a good little one shot.

Tokyo Mew Mew(Sept 2000 – Feb 2003)
Author:Reiko Yoshida
Drama, Romance, Comedy, Low Fantasy, Shoujo
Key Words: Magical Girl, Animals,
Magazine:Nakayoshi Publisher:Kodansha American Publisher: Tokyopop, Kodansha Comics USA
Originated: Japan

Book Volumes: 7

Ichigo Momomiya is a cute, well to do young girl in middle school, with a crush on the cute boy named Masaya Aoyama. She always seems to have a hard time telling him how she feels so when they both went to an endangered species exhibit together, it was like a dream come true. But that dream seemed to turn into a nightmare for her and four other girls when a strange earthquake happened and the girls were bathed in light. Turns out that the light was from a strange contraption that Ryou Shirogane and Keiichiro Akasaka had created to infuse people with the DNA of endangered animals to protect the world from an alien race looking to steal the world from humans. Ichigo, infused with the DNA of an Iriomote Cat, must turn into Mew Mew Ichigo and save the world along with the other girls.

My Thoughts:This is actually a really cute manga. It’s the basic magical girl with a little underlining factor of endangered species. It’s not a bad mix actually in that the characters all have characteristics of the species but sadly it ends there. The girls don’t have attacks that symbolize the animals they were injected with and the colors also don’t feel like they make the cut. For a show that keeps talking about the characters given power from endangered species, they should have put a little more into it. Now that doesn’t mean that I didn’t like the manga. The characters are loveable; the names actually are rather remember-able (although I don’t understand why someone would call their child lettuce or mint of all things. Must be better in Japanese), and the storyline is pretty cool to get into. You do get to a point where you are wondering just who the bad guy is but if I explain why, I would be spoiling things. When the girls are together, they act just like a regular group of friends and seem to have even more chemistry then even the Sailor Scouts from Sailor Moon. It reminds the reader that even though they have been given super powers, it doesn’t mean they aren’t normal girls and won’t use their power for personal gain. I can only wish that some of the drama was taken out so that we could see more of the characters. It circles a lot around Ichigo and I would have liked to see more of the other girls too. The drama with Ichigo and the ‘love triangle’ just gets over used at times.

The artwork was rather cutesy but in a way, I liked it better then some of the older manga’s I read where magical girls were involved. The designs of the girls clothing are out of this world and show off a cute style while still playing to the sexy in a way. The strokes are fluid throughout the manga books, and the way it’s laid out is rather perfect for the action that is placed in it.

A Holy Night to the Lost Lamb(2010)
Author:Kurumi
One Shot, Shoujo, Romance,
Key Words: Church,
Magazine: Publisher: American Publisher:
Originated:

Book Volumes: 1

Kondou Nagi hasn’t been interested in guys since being betrayed by boyfriends three Christmases in a row. Wanting to find love, she goes to a local church for help only to find that the priest has something against her. It doesn’t help that he’s also rather good looking too.

My Thoughts: Um wow. When I wanted something different, I found this. It’s a nice change from School life since it’s just a normal slice of life romance here; instead, we have a relationship of the church standard. A girl comes in to ask for help in her love life and is soon forced to work for the fee of confessing. Now to me, that sounds like a rip off for her having to work but in the end, it seemed to teach her something although I’m not sure what. In fact, I’m not sure what the priest did would have even helped her much. He kept saying that it was like finding a good guy but I didn’t get it.

The Art style is alright though a little lower scale then what I have seen before. Some of the art style made for a comedic affect doesn’t work well as it pushes the characters face to be rather flat and mall deformed.

It was a ok manga to read but not sure if it’s worth reading again. I like the concept but I still don’t get where it was going.

Beautiful Name(2005), A Very Good Name, Pretty Name,
Author:Katayama Kozue
Comedy, One Shot, Romance, School Life, Shoujo,
Key Words: Childhood Love,
Magazine: Publisher: American Publisher:
Originated:

Book Volumes: 1

Karin holds onto her childhood loves memory so tightly, she will have no other and still keeps her hair in much the same way that she always had to make sure he would be able to find her. Unfortunately, while delivering papers to the infirmary, she meets a prankster boy who can’t resist teasing her.

My Thoughts: Ok, this is kind of cute and kind of stupid. The boy who keeps teasing her acts more like a little kid then a teenager and is really dangerous with an anger problem. But in the end, he turned out to be a rather kind guy that took care of her when she needed help. Now is a one shot really called a one shot when there are about 64 pages to it? To me, this seems like a full manga rather then just a one shot but yet Mangafox calls it a one shot. The length of the manga really did bring the tension that was needed to keep someone interested but its not one I would read again. It was a little different storyline that was a bit interesting but in the end it was all about a childhood love interest.

The artwork is kind of good but the faces look a bit chubby. I like how they had some of the styles but there are times when they show them as kids that it looks really bla. I understand why they did that in that it’s unclear in her mind where her love is but when the kids look really low detailed and sometimes boney and long legged that pretty much breaks the love of the art.

Gokuaku Drop(2005)
Author:Tajima Mimi
Comedy, One Shot, Romance, School Life, Shoujo
Key Words: Childhood Love, Kissing,
Magazine: Publisher: American Publisher:
Originated:

Book Volumes: 1

Nami and Ryouko have been best friends since childhood but as they enter into middle school, he truly wonders what their relationship is with him.

My Thoughts: First off, what boy in his right mind at the age of 9 wants to kiss a girl? Boys I knew were always disgusted with kissing, even when their mother kissed them on the cheek so what the hell makes a boy actually want to kiss a girl and not care about ‘cooties’. Not to mention that he keeps forcing this girl to keep kissing him. That’s sexual harassment and it just keeps happening over and over again. At one point, she calls herself a masochist but I never seen her even do anything like that except for letting him kiss her and if everyone who lets someone kiss them is a masochist, then I feel sorry for the world (Nothing against if your into that stuff).

The artwork is standard. Not really bad but not all that good either. It’s bland considering all that I have read.

Again, not something I would read again, it’s just made me scratch my head a bit because they seemed to just have the wrong ideas going on.
