Agreed. Sometimes the first ep can be a little 'lack-luster' but could pick up in the next two or three. Which is why I have to go a watch Kanon. I watched the first ep and practically fell asleep, but I'm being told its turning out to be epic.

I like to watch anime completely recreationally. I have a wife and a full time job so I don't have the money or the time to get wall scrolls and box sets and figurines. Would I like to? Absolutely. Do I think it makes me less of an anime fan? Absolutely not.

And I would say that I've seen about 35 complete animes series since I started watching anime. Not a lot, but each one holds a special place in my heart. [/sappiness]

Hmm. . .this 5 episode thing is a good idea. . .I can't say i have ever limit me to just five. . .when i start something I just have to finish it even if it is the most irritating and boring anime i'll sit through it and see what is so good about it that it got produce. . .
by the way. . .inukami is way hilarious. . .it is also very ecchi and has a wierd sense of humor but all the same good characters and funny plot. . .hey, one piece is alright. . .not as good as some but okay when bored.

the 5 ep rule eh? hmmm ...sounds like a good standard. If i only judged a series on one episode i wouldn't have liked gungrave, air, the list goes on. In terms of the nuber of series i watched, i cant really remember but ive been watching anime for since i was 8, so that's about 14 years. My room is plastered in anime posters, and i do have a good collection of anime action figures like Berserk and DBZ. That's about it.

I don't know about Slam Dunk, but I love Naruto, Detective Conan and One Piece. xDD People have diffrent prefrences, it's stupid to think just because you don't think an anime to be particularly good that everyone will share in that opinion. =/ Sorry if I sound rude, don't mean to.

yea i know what your saying, but kyo has a point, any anime veteran would most likely never list naruto as being one of their top picks.

that is a good idea, but the first ep is supposed to be the one to snag your interest, and as an aspiring novelist, i know from first hand experence that the first ep/chapter sets the bar for the rest of the series

not always, but 85% of the time

waffle's got the right idea, i mean a novel is not an anime, and although the first ep should catch your attention, it doesnt need to give away the best aspects of it until the end

The saying "first impression takes the cake" really also work in anime and movies too. . .the first 35 minutes of a movie will either snag your attention or totally turn you off. . .Also a good example is the Melancholy of S. Harahi. . .that first episode totally turned me off. . .if I was like any normal person i wouldn't wanted to watch all the parts. . .since I am not I got through and i liked it somewhat. . .So i agree with whomever say that the opening of a book or a series is what will keeps an audience interested.

i can understand what your saying about first impressions, but sometimes patience really does pay off. As i said, if i i only watched and judged a series on the first ep, then i wouldnt have bothered to watch gungrave or air. As far as haruhi, i actually liked the first ep, it was pretty funny .. to me at least. Anyways, i think sometimes in anime a certain amount of leeway needs to be given for the creator to set up the story, the characters, the context and that make take a little while.

Everything great needs not be rushed, it takes time for a quality series to be understood fully.

I guess what im saying is that i dont want fast food anime, but substance, and sometimes a little patience is required to appreciate the overall meaning of a series as it may take some time for the episodes to catch up with the creator's vision.
