Unsurprisingly Princess Mononoke... But Porco Rosso comes pretty damn close.

~Damn, I love almost all of Miyazaki's movies! If I had to pick a favorite, I'd choose from the four: Spirited Away, Mononoke Hime, Ponyo, and Whisper of the Heart.

It's always been a tie between Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away for me. But that doesn't mean I don't have a soft spot for the first Ghibli movie I ever saw- My Neighbor Totoro.

Agreed on the earlier comment about Grave of the Fireflies:

- this was one of the best stories ever told. America had to dehumanize the people of Japan to fight their war machine to the bitter end in WW II and I think this film was a collective attempt at grieving the incalculable losses it suffered as a result. It also put humanity back into its rightful place in Japanese society -- a culture that had been told that their needs did not matter - only the emperor and the glory of Japan did. I did shed tears unashamedly while watching this film. http://www.imdb.com/video/screenplay/vi1017839897/

I also have a special place in my heart for Kiki's Delivery Service. So touching and gentle! Exquisite story-telling.
