Just watched the first episode of Rainbow: Nisha Rokubou no Shichinin.

Quick summary from Anime News Network: "The anime adapts George Abe and Masasumi Kakizaki's acclaimed manga about six junior delinquents and their mentor at the Shōnan Special Reform School near Tokyo in 1955. The story follows the boys' lives during their time in the school and the years after they leave. The manga won the Shogakukan Manga Award in 2006 . . ."

Fair warning, starting from the first episode this anime is brutal (as in, violent and disturbing).

It's not as gore infested as Elfen Lied nor as brightly drawn, it's much more dark and sinister visual style. A bit like combining the feel and visuals of Shigurui and Monster 'cept set in an asylum / prison / "reform school" with 7 main characters.

So far, the first episode does little more than introduce the setting and the characters. Which is fine as it conveys a promise for much more to come through the artwork, directing, and, well, mature professionalism is how I put it. Plus you know almost immediately these kids are definitely in a living hell.

It's not quite brutality to children mind you, all the characters are young adults (16 - 18), with perhaps the lead being older. All of them have committed crimes. Many morally justified, some not.

I suggest this anime to any who: Like psychological and mature themes, don't mind dark brutal/violent scenes, any lack of cuteness what-so-ever, can handle shows that are disturbing at a base level.

I for one, am definitely going to watch more. The first episode of this show impressed me more than any other new anime this season.

Totally agreed, this anime look like it's going to be amazing. You really know that it's gonna be hell right from the OP, especially since real "reform schools" were absolutely horrifyingly terrible.

Hehehe true. Perhaps I should have written a different topic title "Amazingly dark disturbing 'effed up anime: Rainbow: Nisha Rokubou no Shichinin." But then people might think it's a joke

I watched the first episode a week ago, was looking for the 2nd ep today but couldn't find it. maybe it'll be out tomorrow?

still not sure if I want to watch the whole series if it's going to be as depressing as other viewers describe. The first episode was not so sad, I was kinda surprised. I was moved, sort of. but you can see some major tragedies are ensured later.
