actually they are true, if you're the one to believe in them. Just like the japanese superstions and traditions. Like Setsubun which is coming up on Feb 3. Setsubun is a ritual of purification/a celebration before the changing of each season, but it's more commonly refered to Feb 3. Mamemaki is one of the rituals, it's basically bean scattering, soybeans to be precise, and what you do is, you chuck a handful at Oni (japanese mythological demon) and it'll disperese the evil spirits and you'll enjoy good health. For men, if you're born in the chinese zodiac of that year, which this year is the rat (Mizushima Hiro, Koyama Keiichiro, Nishikido Ryo...to name a few) they throw or scatter handfuls of soybeans while shouting "Oni wa soto! Fuku wa Uchi" which means "Out with the demons! In with good luck! Also, if you eat the same number of beans as your age plus one more you'll have good luck and health for the rest of the year. There is also Yakudoshi, which is based off of yin and yang, where it is believed at some point in our life we will experience bad luck. (Which for me was last year) For Men it's ages 25, 42, and 61. Women it's ages 19, 33, and 37. So the year that you turn one of those ages, you'll experience ill luck, and trust me it's true. I turned 19 last year and that whole year was horrible. First the school lost all my credits and I had to extra courses before and after school to make up for the ones they lost...seriously! I almost didn't graduate, because of the lost credits, and I got fired from my job TWICE....my dog was stolen from me, but I got him back, and my garage was broken into and my lawn mower was stolen while I was in the shower...how scary is that, although I blame my brother for the last one, because he left the garage open.
