Cliche' main character weapons?!
Posted 4/27/10
This is just my speculation but most mainstream RPGs have the main character rely mostly on use of swords (I'm gonna throw daggers into this category too)

I do believe the whole symbol of a hero is a "sword and shield" but I'd like to see more diverse weapons... but with the up crop of more and more create your own hero type games I guess the age of the standard "blade and sword" will fade as time moves on.

Personally I'd like to see more Hand-to-Hand weapons like Katars.

o.o are their any games where people have cool hand to hand wepons?

suikoden 2 the charecter had this cool wepon and xeson(sp?) the charecter used fist but u dont see scyths or combination wepons

Well,for me,it's a toss-up between Swords and Bows :|

And I have to agree with you about that "Sword and Shield" symbolism thing. But I have a feeling that this standard of weaponry in games and the like will take a rather long time to fade away.

(OUT OF PLACE QUESTION)Oh,and in BioShock 1,I've read that your first weapon is a WRENCH. Now nothing gets more epic than that.

So tell me, what's the most common weapon in medieval times? Swords right? Not only that is an all purpose weapon but also it is one of the most easiest to train and the most easiest to mass-produce. Hence, it is a generic weapon both in rl and in games.

But aside from that it is a pragmatic weapon, writers also romanticized swordsman in their books thus making it even more popular.

EDIT: How about machine guns or Rifles with fixed bayonet. Wild Arms is one of the few games that the protagonist use such weapons.
