Many people have mentioned examples, but any anime with a tsundere pretty much fires the question back at you.

I don't understand what you mean with that? But then these '-dere' classifications confuse me...

There was an odd bit in the Guardian last month with a woman recommending strong female characters in anime. Sakura from Naruto turned up, as did the Major from Ghost in the Shell and Ghibli characters in general. And Satoshi Kon which, having seen only Paranoia Agent which takes a dim view of popular culture whatever your sex, I wasn't too sure about when it came to examples.

A couple of series I'm watching at the moment would certainly count - Nadie from El Cazador (Ellis doesn't do the screaming, but she's a funny case) and indeed most of the female characters are shown to be 'strong' in terms of being resourceful and able to look after themselves physically and otherwise. But then you'd expect nothing less from the people behind Noir. And on a completely different kind of anime there's Shikabane Hime, whose titular undead killers of the undead are uniformly both female and ridiculously capable in a fight, with Makina being the most prominent example.

Tetsuwan Birdy: Decode, and Ga-Rei -Zero- immediately come to mind. Also, Seto no Hanayome, Kara no Kyoukai, Spice and Wolf, Mnemosyne, and Phantom ~Requiem for the Phantom~.

Most fighting anime, even excluding bishoujo series like the "Mai" franchise (which I have seen) and Ikki Tousen (which I haven't), have female "good guy" characters that participate in combat. Only the older ones like Dragonball Z and Yu Yu Hakusho didn't.

One Piece and Naruto, two of the most popular shonen franchises today, have them.

As for female main characters, try looking up the Kaze Hikaru manga (haven't read) or the aforementioned bishoujo series.
