I won't lie, I downloaded fansubbed anime in my lifetime, that's why I came to CR to support JP authors. And imo I think fansubbers did a better job at subbing than JP, especially what I see on CR. Oh, and not to mention most DVDs subbed in JP are usually horrible quality. Let's face it, anime is getting immensely popular in the US and JP needs to keep up if they wanna sell their anime to us, and the US should be more interested in subbed anime rather than the dubbed crap you see on Cartoon Network imo. A lot of people prefer to watch subbed anime than dubbed these days as well.

I would pay of fan subbed anime before dubbed ones. JP subbed is bad too. I brought Saint Seiya JP subbed and i laughed my ass off. Dont cut a pie.

well isn't it a fan' s enjoyment to spread the sense of anime by subs? so why making it commercialized?

I would say yes......fansubbs are great......they dont make the subbs to formal, have cursing, and have little foot notes on things that are not so common to us

I have bought one fan sub in my lifetime. I will never do it again. I didn't even knew it was a fansub until I received it from ebay. It doesn't help support the anime companies out. If they want to do more fansubs they should make their own anime dubbing company and do it legally. That way, the anime company and japan would be getting paid. How do they get these anime to fansub it anyways. Is it legal for them to obtain it. If this keeps up there will no more anime to fansub. Then, what are you going to do then? You got to realize that Japan is losing money too. So, I say if someone wants to fansub they start their own business and make it legal.

mostly, fansubs are overrated. they often do weird things, and they sometimes exaggerate with their footnotes and explanations.
I highly recommend that you watch this video from a professional translator, so he knows what he's talking about:
