THE LOST COLONY OF ROANOKE

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roanoke_Colony

In 1587, a colony of 114 men, women, and children became one of the earliest attempts to colonize the new world - America. Traveling from Britain to Roanoke Island, on North Carolina's coast, they were the first true attempt at colonization of the New World. They also became one of the Nation's first great mysteries.

The colony, led by John White, settled on Roanoke Island, off the coast of North Carolina. John White's granddaughter, Virginia Dare, became the first American born in this new land. But times were tough in the new world and supplies became scarce. Ten days after Virginia's birth, Simon Fernandes, a Portuguese sailor, was forced to return to England for more supplies. After much protest, John White was chosen to return with him.

Upon his arrival to England, John White found that his mother country was engaged in a grave war with the Spaniards. Force to assist in this wartime effort, John White was unable to return to Roanoke Island until 3 years later.

When John White arrived back in the Americas on August 18, 1590, he could not find a single trace of the colony. No people, living or dead, could be found anywhere. All personal belonging were left in place as if the people simply disappeared into thin air. His only clue was a carving on a tree - 'CRO' was all he could decipher. Thinking that the 3 letters may have been a unsuccessful attempt to spell out the word CROATOAN, a nearby island, John White sailed to Croatoan to search for his family and fellow Englishmen. No trace of the colonists has ever been found. Someday, perhaps precise evidence will be found telling what exactly did happen, but until then, the "Lost Colony" will remain one of history’s greatest mysteries.

that so spooky!!! I love reading about this stuff!!

I heard of this story before. Many said they were taken away by aliens on UFOs.

I believe in UFOs... But even so, thatd be pretty inhumane for them to take whole towns of humans... Then again, can it be inhumane when their disappearance might have been caused by non-humans?

There's only one rational explanation to this - The Government... Well for the places that had a government anyway.

And several Irrational theories, which would include; supernatural means and UFO's!!! :O But personally i beleive that the individual disappearances could be some sort of criminal thing too...maybe like a psychotic person or something?

damn i love reading about mysterious things. Gets me thinking XD

Edit: one more thought! Anyone think there could be like a multiverse and somehow these people got swooped into some sort of time or dimensional portal?? LOL C'mon this shouldn't be hard to beleive...if there are UFO's and supernatural stuff, there can be anything LOL

Very interesting stories, thanks for sharing. I've heard about the "Lost Colony" before, it was discussed during an American History class I was in. From what i recall my Professor said it was most likely that the remaining members of the "Lost Colony" of Roanoke were taken in by surrounding Native American tribes. Several years after the Roanoke settlers disappeared a tribe was found that had members with mixed heritage, and that is was very clear this Native tribe has been in contact with Europeans. Several tribal members had much lighter skin than the other members, blue eyes and much lighter hair color too. It is believed some of the Roanoke Settlers ended up with this tribe. It's also pretty likely that they tried to sail back to England and died at sea.

I've never heard of the Dyatlov Pass Accident, the disappearing Eskimo or Owen Parfitt before and those stories are all pretty creepy! The disappearing Eskimo gave me the shivers. Unlike with the Roanoke Colony disappearance I can't think of a single logical thing that would explain there disappearance.
