I only bother learning simplified, just based on what's most widely used. In theory, it would be nice to also know how to at least read traditional, but learning characters is already hard enough for me without having the extra burden. The only real downside is if I ever move to Hong Kong for work, but it's not as if English isn't used there or anything.

Also, shout out to restaurants/libraries/etc. in the US: stop using traditional characters! This isn't the 1950s or 1960s where all the native Chinese readers in the US came from Taiwan or had fled the mainland and had political reasons to bitterly oppose simplified characters. Simplified is more widely used in the world now; get over it. Maybe now that everything is typed things might switch over to more traditional again in several decades if mainland China ever decides to change their curriculum back, but that's certainly not the case now.

Well, everyone in mainland China uses simplified. Hong Kong, Taiwan, and some old expat people scattered throughout the globe use traditional. At least in the US, young students tend to learn simplified (or both) but traditional only would be very unusual. I assume that's the case elsewhere, but maybe I'm wrong. It's got to be at least 1.3B+ simplified-only or simplified-first vs. at most, what, 100 million traditional-only or traditional-first?

Alas, those few make the difference between me vaguely understanding and not at all. I assume I am not alone.
