This is an idea from one of the News forum topics, that another member said they thought was a good idea, so I thought I would put out a poll on it.

As most members of Crunchyroll will be aware, there are still some old men in production committees in Tokyo that are reluctant to allow their shows to stream on Crunchyroll. Some of them may think that streaming on Crunchyroll will hurt their chances of getting a DVD license.

And one of the ideas they have is that having the streams deadline-free interfere with DVD sales. I don't think this is a correct understanding of the way the market works, but its their creative content, so they have the right to dictate terms.

However, it seems that some rights holders, both Japan content creators and the North American license holders, are willing to license deadline-streams. And that is the inspiration for the Summer Anime Matinée - taking lemons and trying to make Lemonade.

How the Summer Anime Matinée Would Work

The idea is that CR works out a deal with several North American digital rights owners to stream series out of their back catalog. Each series would release one new episode per day, and each episode would be available for 30 days. For the one and two season shows, when one series has finished, another series starts the next day.

For its part, Crunchyroll would work to get rights outside of North America to allow as many members as possible to see as many Summer Anime Matinee series as possible. Hopefully some rights holders will see the benefit of generating some royalty revenues from back catalog titles that might not be earning much of anything anymore.

Side-effects of the Summer Anime Matinée

There are three side-effects of the Summer Anime Matinée that might help Crunchyroll get a larger number of streams in the Summer and Fall Anime seasons.

The first side-effect is that the "use it or lose it" deadline streams will draw new viewers, and new viewers will spill over to other series that Crunchyroll streams. That increase in audience makes royalties from Crunchyroll streams more attractive.

The second side-effect is that the more DVD license holders Crunchyroll is seen to be cooperating with, the less nervous production committees in Tokyo will be about losing hopes for DVD licenses if they stream on Crunchyroll.

The third side-effect is that some people will see a favorite series is streaming on CR, and get a trial membership to watch it in HQ and ad-free. But then, as more people try memberships, some will decide to keep subscribing. And the bigger the subscriber base, the easier it will be for Crunchyroll to be able to "sweeten the deal" to land streaming simulcast licenses.

I clicked New Poll - are you telling me that it doesn't automatically go in the Poll Section? It would be silly to click the New Poll button and then have the post go into some other section. The silliest would be for it to go to the General Section with the intense discussions about what you would do if your crush saw you half naked or what is your favorite tree.

I wouldn't post this to Feedback unless it attracted some positive votes.

... Every poll thats in the "Main forums" goes to the poll section. Its not a silly way to click on new poll and then redirect it to another section because when your making the poll it says "Topic category" It shows you before time on where you can put this poll ,obviously the only choice is to put it in the poll section.. Anyways
Have anything else to say on how things should work? go to help/support/feedback section (link given already)

I think it should be in the feedback section because you never know if they will like your opinion. It sounds like your scared of negative comments since you don't want it to be in the feedback section unless its positive well just deal with it.. its life , everyones a critic and is entitled to their own opinion.

No, its just I normally see problems with accounts and how to do this and that in that section. I've already been reported to the moderators for misbehaviour in posting this poll, I wouldn't want to waste BasouKazuma's time ... he and the other tech support people obviously have a hard job to do.

I normally just watch the anime - its the first time I tried to post something outside the premium members area, and compared to political blogs like European Tribune or Daily Kos, its hard to get used to the fact that a link to the poll does not show up anywhere in your user account.

As far as negative comments, I more expect to be ignored, so I'm happy to get any comments at all, positive, negative, or indifferent.

But this is a test run. I'm happy to get any and all advice on how its done for when I try for my big proposal to add an autoplay option to the player, like Hulu has.

It might be obvious to someone who's used Crunchyroll's forums a lot, but to someone who has used lots of different forums and social networks, its not obvious at all. I saw the selection box, but nothing that looked like a place to put polls, so I left it alone. After all, the default setting ought to work - that's why its the default.

But when I went to edit the post to fix a typo, I didn't see the selection box anymore, which was unusual behaviour for a web forum editing system. I know a lot of the old BBCode systems used to be like that, years ago, but modern systems aren't. I guess its something that untrusted users can use to get up to mischief.

As for me, I think, this is a great idea!
Would be nice if CR could realize it.

For a more specific example, after Aoi Hana and Sasameki Koto, its a fairly dry Spring for Yuri.

With Nozomi just having released Aria the Origination and going to release Maria-sama ga Miteru Season 4 in July, they could show Aria the Animation and Maria-sama ga Miteru Season 1 and also experiment with something from their back catalog like Third the Girl with the Blue Eye, to see whether it has any impact on their back catalog sales from raising the profile of back catalog titles.

Not your type of broadcast, or not your type of anime?

As far as type of broadcast, its actually not my type either. I like the streaming back catalog, and I like watching the simulcasts as the show goes to air. Actually, I have one of the two votes for "not ideal, but ...".

If you mean not your type of anime, the answer to that is simple ... that was just one example. The ideal would be to have three or four R1 rights holders phone home and each one run a set of series. The poll is not for the Nozomi example in particular.

Indeed, there will be different region restrictions for different series, so the best hope of getting availability of some series outside of North America would be to have three or four running at once.
