It may not be such a popular subject but I was wondering whether incest might be a lot more common today than we assume. I don't mean that more people are choosing to be in incestuous relationships but people might not know for sure who they are related to. There is an increase in single parent families. The mother might not know who the father is or whether he has fathered any other children, and the father might no always know about the children he has fathered. Also there is artificial insemination, surrogacy and adoption. What happens when the children from both sides meet each other or other close relatives?

I think it's possible in today's promiscuous society that incest might be much more practiced than we or the people involved realise. So I wonder whether it's something to worry about. Mostly I don't care so much about who people have sex with but it might be something to consider when having children as inbreeding is related to increased number of birth defects.

What do you think?
should we care or worry about it?

Of course we should worry about it. There are limits to everything in life. Some may not think that we should worry about who people choose to be involved with sexually, but I do. Incest is probably on the rise along with everything else bad and immoral. It's horrible. *Shrugs* Let us just be among the better people of this world with good morality and sanity.
Good day. =]

I think ancient cultures practiced incest way more then people do nowadays. Personally i could care less, if someone wants to have an incestual relationship fine but i reccomend adopting a kid rather than having one.

i think it is just there was never much awareness about incestuous relationship, but it does not necessarily mean that these relationships does not exist or not as prevalent as today.

Personally i am uncomfortable with anybody having an incestuous relationship, especially if they are siblings. I mean, it freaks me out. But really i dont think i have any right to comment anything on this matter because who knows that they really are destined to be together? Yes i am a believer of destiny and of the existence of a fated one. I guess this issue is as controversial as having relationship with the same sex?

I think that royal families in the past practice incest in order to keep their bloodlne 'pure' or so they believe. I guess they just do not know the implications this have on their children. But now that we do know, i guess less people actually WANT to have an incestuous relationship right especially if they do want to have children together. Perhaps there is a probability that they 'accidentally' fall in love with each other and thus have this kind of relationship?

P.S. Found one case of an incestuous relationship

wow, you have approached this question in a serious and interesting light. never have i considered that i may, against all odds, be related unknowingly to a woman i might meet. each of your points are well taken. however, i think the likelihood of this happening is quite low for there to be any unusual fear. but bringing this topic up and to peoples attention is beneficial and gives one something to think about. i think though, it reinforces the fact that before you have children with someone, you need to both know each other thoroughly, meaning one's personality, talents and yes family history concerning all sorts of things including relatives.

again, great post.

I think it would be quite awkward for me to be in a relationship with my brother.

Some people might not know they are related.

Ignorance is on the rise. If two people share romantic feelings no matter who they are, let them be in love and stop insulting them. Stop being so ignorant. It's like people that hate homosexual people for being "immoral". :/

Also, who are you to say someone's love is wrong?
