Elfen Lied is stupid. I really like gore, don't get me wrong. The creator has too many fetishes and the mentality of a 2-year old. That's how immature it is. Excessive blood and nudity do not make something 'deep, profound, and mature'. Quite the opposite. It's the most childish I've ever watched. Yes, that includes those magical girl animes. Then read the manga and LOL at how stupid the art is and how disproportionate the characters are. Then LOL as Lucy dies. Being a puddle of shit suits her personality.

LOLOL. Yeah, I didn't think the Elfen Lied anime was that great either, but for different reasons.

Well, looking back at it now, what I wrote does look like a rant with no legit reasons. But I have them, I swear. *hides in corner*

Why don't you like it, if I may ask?

I enjoyed the manga because it felt more like a complete story. I'm one that often get bothered by the little details.

I saw a comment once saying that they hated that the show was cut off halfway. Kinda the halfway point in the manga. But I read a few things as to why this probably happened.

1. They made the anime while the manga was ongoing, so the end wasn't like, canon yet.
2. They had to fit what they wanted to into 13 episodes (14 if you count the OVA [ep 10.5])

They switched some things up in the anime that essentially made it so there couldn't be a second season. Like Kurama probably dying with his daughter, when the bomb goes off. That part was very different in the manga. Kurama didn't have much of role in the second half of the manga, yet he was with Nana in the scene near the end. That bothered me. The biggest mess up by far though, was how Kohta had resolved things with Lucy even though she killed his dad and little sister. In the manga, that happens WAY later, AND Kohta WAS NOT so forgiving. Seeing how one of the central conflicts was resolved so prematurely was horrible and pretty much just completely turned me off to the anime.

I would have liked some realism in Kohta's character.
Let's go over some of the things he's done.
- Find a naked girl with horns on the beach, instead of EVEN THINKING about taking her to the authorities, NOPE, LET'S TAKE HER HOME.
- Find a homeless girl, take her home, no questions asked. (Maybe a bit more understandable, but still)
- So many advances on him by his cousin, yet he's so damn clueless. (Characteristic of a typical harem, which Elfen Lied didn't need)
- Find out Lucy killed your dad and sister right in front of you when you were a kid, IT'S ALL GOOD?!
If it were explained that he was religious or had some sort of brain defect that somehow made him ridiculously hospitable to random strangers, and so forgiving. Seriously, that last one just pissed me off beyond belief. That manga at least did that one right.

I think that the anime seemed rushed and they tried to throw WAY TOO MUCH at you. They should have left out the bit of the Kakuzawas having horns. That part just leaves the viewer with unnecessary questions, especially since they never reveal WHY in the anime. Some parts of the manga that weren't in the anime include Mayu's reactions. Having been sexually abused as a child, she reacted with disgust at some points when she saw Kohta and the girls conducting themselves in lewd manners. Taking that out kind of just made adding the back story of Mayu pointless, except for the part where we were supposed to feel sorry for her.

Even Lucy's flashback, which was in the OVA (ep 10.5) was done better in the manga. I could empathize more there because the story seemed deeper.

It would be better if they redid everything to match the manga IMO. It could be done in 26 episodes, I think.

You just described everything I was going to write about Elfen Lied.

Alright, there's Mirai Nikki. I don't want to re-explain things, so just read my review for a pretty basic idea of how terrible it is -
http://myanimelist.net/profile/noyoureinsane/reviews

Then there's Another. I'll just bullet everything since there's a lot.
- Insane use of shock value that never follows through. The dolls are insignificant the plot and only there to creep you out. Mei has no real relevance to the Misaki that died 26 years ago, and giving them the same name is just to creep out.
- Unrealistic characters. No one develops despite all the deaths happening. Kouchi doesn't change, Mei doesn't change, the people that do change turn insane and that's it.
- Unexplained plot devices. So Mei has a magic eye that can see the power of death. Way too plot convient and isn't even explained in either the anime or manga. She just has it to have it.
- Terrible main characters. So she knows that everyone is dying, she knows who the dead person is, she can PROVE that she knows who the dead person is, yet she doesn't do anything because she "never wanted to hurt Kouchi." BS.

I can name a lot more. It's just terrible.

26 eps would do it, seeing how damned short the chapters are. Not to mention that on every other page, some one is either, crying, dying, or naked.

Honestly, I think the manga is worse than the anime. The art is terrible. The scenery is decent, but I swear the artist is recycling it. Sure look that way. The proportions are way off, and every one has the same face. The mangaka just has too many fetishes. Lolis, a young woman who wets herself, really, what goes through your mind? He doesn't have the guts to kill off anyone either. No one dies. No one of importance, anyways. Except Lucy. You think a character is about to die, but then, OMG, he doesn't. Bando loses the bottom half of his body, we think he dies, he comes back with a bionic ass. Really? He's the only character with any sort of development, which really isn't that hard to do , seeing that he literally spends the first 30 saying nothing but 'fuck' 'kill','bitch', and 'balls'. It's just all too convenient. Am I supposed to understand that he's now walking around with a mechanical penis? All the chapters end with a cliffhanger which gets really irritating after the first time.

Lucy as a whole bothers me. She is presented as the moral 'right', when she's clearly wrong. Okay, you have a crap childhood. Fine. That's acceptable. What's not is how she goes around murdering innocents, and we are told that is 'acceptable'. That is not acceptable in the least. She's insanely weak. When she was bullied, instead of standing up to the bullies, she slaughters them. That's weak. You can't confront your problem, so you get rid of it in an immoral way. Stupid. When the horned dude tells her to breed with him, instead of telling him 'no', and explaining it like a human being (which she is supposed to be portrayed as. She is supposed to be 'more human than the humans'. My ass) she slaughters him. The only time she actually says anything resembling human speech, she's saying it to someone she already killed. Well, geez, don't you think it'll be more effective it the person is, I don't know, alive? Pathetic.

Another thing is that the scientists seemed to know what would happen when Lucy lost her horns. Well, it you know that, why not just, I don't know, remove the horns off the babies born with them instead of chaining them to walls naked? Laughable. Not to mention physically impossible. Also the horns would not be white. They would be yellowish to brownish. I know they're bone, but bone generally doesn't stay white when exposed to outside elements for so long. But I suppose they would have to be while, otherwise they wouldn't look much like cat ears.

The only thing decent about it is the ending. God, I laughed my ass off when Lucy turned into a puddle of shit. So funny! (I'm being serious, I laughed) It suits her well. Not to mention physically impossible. But you know, the entire manga is full of physical impossibilities.

I agree with what you said about Kohta. Normal, sane, humans do not go around turning (not your) house into orphanages and, building harems of underage girls. Normal, sane, humans do not go off, marry their cousins, and name theri child 'Nyuu'. I have no empathy for cousinXcousin relationships. I pity the poor kid. 'Nyuu'. That is not what you name a child you that you want to have a normal childhood.

One thing (okay, one of millions) that bothered my about the anime is that it was never explained with it's called 'Elfen Lied'. The manga did, but I don't see why it would warrant it being the title. The manga and anime both insult Elfen Lied, which is a really beautiful poem.

Ah, some very good points. Also, the manga is more of a harem than the anime because there's an additional girl (who happens to pee herself). As for the cousin relationship thing, I think it's legal in Japan.

The Diclonius were just supposed to be murderous because it was supposedly in their genes. A lot of things were difficult to buy though.

Haha, this is one of the few anime that I have such a strong opinion about.

Yep, normally I don't write such long paragraphs about anime.

I heard it was cousinXcousin was legal in Japan, not sure if it's true, though. It'd be kind of wierd, because your mother's your mother, but she's also your first cousin or something...

Marriage between cousins is not only legal in Japan, but also in many countries throughout the world, including some states in the United States.

Frankly, the stigma against it is a bit strange, considering many of our taboos in the east originate from the christian Bible, and yet in the list of prohibited relationships in the Old Testament, cousins are not among them.

I kind of agree with you on "why is this exactly taboo throughout history?" as an oddity BUT now we know about genetics and how inbreeding is bad for the children (much higher rate of birth defects) so I think it should be a taboo now.

As for a terrible anime

If genetics were the real reason, we would require genetic counseling and/or testing for anyone getting married, as we let people get married every day that have a far higher chance of having children with heredity diseases than a random cousin-cousin pair.

Some Interesting info on the whole cousin-cousin thing:

I agree with part of this, interracial couples have a much better chance of having babies without birth defects but, using your website (the only fact that had citations btw), "Children of non-related couples have a 2-3% risk of birth defects, as opposed to first cousins having a 4-6% risk.". I even agree with you that the whole "Cousin marriage" is a bit blown out of proportion due to cultural bias but I still think finding someone not directly related to you or (i'll compromise) even distantly related to you is a better idea. I will say I doubt it will do much good on the whole perception of it in the USA though. Spoilers for Summer Wars
.
Honestly, I'm having a feeling of revulsion even thinking about marrying my cousins but I like to try and be a bit open-minded and I realize that isn't the case everywhere.

It is interesting reading up on it and checking the sources on wikipedia.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cousin_marriage#Genetics
Especially this fact "Put differently, first-cousin marriage entails a similar increased risk of birth defects and mortality as a woman faces when she gives birth at age 41 rather than at 30" o_0
well thanks for blowing my mind I guess LOL
I'll try and look at it a little less harshly now then.

umm .. terrible anime ehh.... well I personally didn't like Phi Brain very much at all and dropped it.
I have no problems dropping an anime if I don't like it or can't relate to it in anyway.
