There is an app for Android phones... but if you search crunchyroll nothing comes up <weird> I typed " watch anime" in the search key and crunchyroll's app appeared. The app is great and simple to use. However there are times where it lags but I think that 3G fault.

Yep, our Android app (Beta) is officially out in the market for devices with Android OS 2.1+ and is currently only for Premium Members until we get advertisement support coded in. It turns up when I search "Crunchyroll" in the Market but, if that doesn't work, search "Anime and Drama". Also, here's some things to look out for:

Annoying things you would notice with the first release:
- Data isn't always up-to-date so you may need to manually refresh (Menu > Refresh) in order to see new releases
- Rotating the device causes the app to reload the page
- Leaving the app while playing a video (even for a phone call) and then re-opening the app causes the video to start playing from the beginning
- Videos may play for a bit then prompt an error message and cause the video player to close or crash
- Not all of the videos have been encoded for Android yet

What kind of information does the app collect? I'm just wondering since there are many apps out there that send your phone number, phone serial number, location (without GPS like general IP address location or something else) and other information without the user knowing.

Hello, I I've just downloaded this app, and when I try to log in, it does say logging in, but when I suppose it's logged in, the application force closes. I'm using a samsung galaxy s i9000 running Froyo 2.2.1 (xxjpx)

Downloaded it to try out on both the phone (ZTE Blade / Orange San Francisco running Eclair 2.1 modaco rom) and the Archos A70 tablet running the latest froyo firmware (2.2.1 Android / 2.0.71 Archos firmware version)

I was initially getting the same error of a login that took a long time to complete followed by a force close, but I rebooted the tablet and it would then log in and display the list of streams fine... only to pop up an error saying "This video cannot be played" regardless of which video I attempted to play. Could be a codec issue of some kind although other than MPEG2 files I've not encountered anything the A70 has had trouble with so far.

On the other hand it works perfectly on the phone and doesn't seem to be dropping any frames or stuttering at all which is impressive on a 600Mhz cheap phone Just a shame that the 7" tablet can't view the same files at the moment as it beats the 3.5" phone screen!

Seems like I have the same problem as you had on your tablet, but rebooting my device isn't working. Currently running "Darkys Rom v6.0 JPX Gingerbread Edition," do you think this might have an impact on the crunchyroll app?

All Android apps tell you what they need access to before you install them. Ours needs full internet access and access to read your phone's current state. We do log IP addresses and determine your general location based on it since the content available to you depends on the country you live in. The app doesn't store your exact location, name or anything else from your device. All other information would be gained by asking you to type it in and is securely stored on our servers.

I would suggest backing up your data with Rom Manager and installing a Stock Rooted build for your Galaxy S just to see if the videos work. If they do, then it's a problem that you'll need to take up with the developer of your custom rom. You can probably find them on xdadevelopers.

We've tested our videos on multiple types of Android devices including the Samsung Galaxy Tab so we assumed our encodes would work on any Android device with Android 2.1 or higher installed. We'll try to look into this issue.

Thanks for the update. From the links I posted, the apps didn't ask for permissions for accessing the phone number, serial number (ie, IMEI or MDN), etc. Android doesn't have a particular permission category for it. While the permissions Android provides the user is nice and all, it doesn't fully tell the user everything that is being accessed. My IMEI example may not be a perfect example since it's technically under the READ_PHONE_STATE permission. However, Android doesn't exactly make it clear what the "phone state" is when presented to the user.

It's nice that the Crunchroll app doesn't do anything behind the scenes like many other apps (especially ones with ads in them).

I hope it doesn't take too long to get the ads in and open this app up to free members. This is something I would certainly use if I were away from my computer and wanted to watch episodes you have here. What kind of features does/will it have? Will I be able to get to my watch list and go to new episodes from there? That's typically what I do when keeping up with simulcasts. Thanks for the app and the great anime!

Currently the app is for logging in, seeing the list of series, selecting a series and watching episodes on the device. We haven't added the Favorites or Watch List to the app yet. I'm not sure when we'll be able to provide access for free members since our developers are very busy. I'll probably post here when I have a better idea.

BasouKazuma, is there an official method or channel for feedback when there is an issue that might need to be addressed on the next beta release? Plus I don't know what are known issues and what might be new bugs.

Before I list these, I just want to say I am HAPPY with the CR App and excited about being able to use it.

Observation of issues with the CR App:

1. Paused video does not prevent screen saver from kicking in, then the video becomes "un-paused" after the screen is locked

2. Video starts over when screen rotated (known issue).

3. Video & audio sync issue with video being about 500 or more milliseconds ahead of the audio. I experienced this twice with both a new release (Fortune Arterial Ep11) and also an older episode of Bleach (Ep54). I've restarted the app and it still appeared. But I didn't experience it with the latest episode of Letter Bee or Fairy Tail. I will test restarting my phone (Droid X) and seeing if it might be a memory issue. I do run ATK to keep misc programs killed off.

There are other issue, but I was wondering where would be the best and most useful place to submit issues and also to check on known issues.

Thanks for the APP!!!!!

It's a bit odd as it's pretty similar to a Galaxy S in terms of things that run on it. It's entirely possible it's something odd with Archos' firmware though as it's not quite stock (software buttons and removal of Mpeg2 / AAC audio plus a few other changes to tabletify it a bit) especially as it's still seems a WIP for them... still with flash installed the normal site is pretty close to working so once they get round to their optimised flash release hopefully the app wouldn't be needed anyway. If there's any info I can supply to help though let me know as until then I'll keep using the phone for it

This thread would be the official place to report bugs though we may be adding a bug report function to the Android app.

We use AAC encoded audio for all the videos. So if your device is unable to decode AAC, that would be why the videos don't work.

Edit: A co-worker just told me that Archos is known for charging people you for extra components. So I think you would have to buy AAC support from them, which sucks.
