To be honest, it does get on my nerves when I really don't understand what they're trying to say. It's rather I ignore them or make them understand their mistake and rewrite it again. I try to improve myself by trying to speak and type in ways people can understand. To be honest I have a hard time learning the national language here since when I try to read texts from people who butcher it I really CAN'T understand ANYTHING.

People may get lazy and tired to text using full words so they use shortcuts, but please. Just please... make yourself understandable!

Eeeh I get over abbreviations pretty easily
The things I can't stand are;

"wen dey wryt lyk dis". THAT IS WRONG. TOO FAR MAN TOO FAR.

"Or WhEn ThEy WrItE LiKe ThIs." ITS JUST UGLY.

It's not like I tell people to not do it, I just sit behind my computer raging, it's just a pet hate of mine. I use correct grammar and puncuation in texts too, which i wish I didn't since it takes that much longer. It's just something that I'm picky about. 8DD
Maybe the fact I take English Literature and English Language at A Level has something to do with it D;

What she said ^

I generally type eloquently most of the time, and I also do Eng Lit for A Level. Except when you are given character limit and thus forced to type using abbreviations. When people type like what you mentioned above, it is just plain retarded. That is butchering the English language.
Somtimes it is just better to type using abbreviations such as omg, wtf, and lol, or even when abbreviating drama names.

When you are online and typing to your friends, you are not going to always type in the "Queen's English".

I am not going to lie but I frequently make grammatical and spelling errors when typing yet that does not mean I am butchering the language - it means I just made a mistake.

A few text language in sentences online is fine, typing "lyk dis" frequently and all the time is just annoying.

I don't care. I'll only complain if it's too incomprehensible to read. if dey wryt lyk dis, I know what they're talking about, it's not really a bother.
The 1337/ all caps lock combination confuses me a little though.

Now on the cell phone, I will forget little punctuation marks because it is a bit of a hassle with my little phone. When I get a new one, that has a keyboard, I will include them. On the computer, I have a keyboard and I use it. Like the majority of people answering this, I too find myself peeved with 'internet speak'. If I can't spell a word, I will go to dictionary.com to find the proper spelling. If the word I'm speaking is in Japanese, I will in fact look that up too. I can't help it, it's just who I am. I just figure that since it's my native tongue, I should know how speak and write in it properly or I look like a bloody fool.

I don't mind the occasional "LOL" or "wanna," but when people tak lyk dizzz, it really irritates me. Be grateful that you aren't my age, and appear to be the single one of all of your friends who uses proper grammar.

I never actually could get the hang of text-speak. It's just so natural to write in clear English.

Oh! Oh! What really irritates me is when the writer put an apostrophe in "its" or a plural word. Does this irk anyone else?

i write like this cuz its more convenient for me how is it butchering? o suddenly everyone is an english teacher? sure i dont use heavy slang like numbers in long word (th only expection is 2 for to and 4 for for. i for one sucked at grammar and punctuation im not goin to force myself to do something im not good at. i will use better lang for offical documents however i will not conform to people who insist on using proper lang is the only way......next thing u know they will force us all to use cursive and have proper penmanship at all times.

butchering is wen u use non sensical phrases and words(in ur own native lang) that make u want to say what did he/she just say?

It could be because most people either don't care or are too lazy, and to be honest, it's of little importance to me. If I'm able to understand what you're conveying, then I could care less about your spelling. However, if you butcher the language so much to the point where it's incomprehensible, then I become annoyed.

Or have you ever thought of the fact that these people may not be fluent in the English language, even with spell check?

I am not fluent! I learn English through ESL, barely making out with passing mark. If I made the effort, why shouldn't they, especially when most of the offenders, and the worst of them, are native speakers of our tongue.

Who cares lol, I kno bu5in355 rep0rt5 4ren't written 1ike this. lmao

And you study for yourself not for others. And just because some people spell 'to' with '2' it does not mean that they are "bad" at English.
You'll find that out when the essay grade comes out.

This is a reason why we should disallow for improper spelling and grammar- I highly doubt anyone is able to understand this jargon.

GRAMMAR NAZI just like my friend...but some grammar nazis are nice I guess , she's helped me say , "my friend and I" instead of "me and my friend" but yea i dont like using a "U" for you, i used to back in the early days but i usually dont capitalize my "i's" as you can tell and I don't write in complete sentences/run ons. And i misuse the period and the commas alot, and I don't like people using "4" for "four" or "lyk" for "like" but you know using idk...is a whole lot simpler than typing I don't know......;D

An illiterate is a person who lacks the ability to read or write, the impression you are giving right now. If you do not want to dignify my response, then be my guest, I do not ask you to 'dignify' my response, nor do I care if you respond. Indeed, it would be best if you don't respond, as to save yourself shame and loss of face.

I suppose that you are entitled to the right to making yourself look more and more asinine by honouring me with that incomprehensability that is your responce to my posts and, to that, I have no objections. But my eyes are wearied by various attempts at dechiphering of your pappycock and, seeing as you can't be bothered with proper orthography or grammar, I will respond to you once you demonstrate a basic command of our language.
