I tried to find a topic similar in the forums but I couldn't find one. If the topic is similar to any other post and must be locked, so be it.
I have been recently watching kdramas (and animes too) and have been noticing during the subbing process the westernization of names (first name last name as opposed to the asian custom of last name first name). I am not Asian, although I am multi-etnic (and pretty multi-ethnic at that), but I somewhat do not like it when subbers do this. Now I do understand if you come to a country where the western convention of having you family name as your surname for legal purposes, that you obviously will have to follow suit, but to flat out westernize the name of a character simply because the westerner is not used to it is just silly in my opinion. I guess the crux of the post is this; am I a westerner in the minority that thinks that this is wrong (aside from the legal purpose as stated above)? And I guess I will also add this to those that are Asian out there in the CR community; even though you don't have a western name, do you feel that it is necessary/important/the in thing to do to have a western name? I would like to hear your comments, especially from the Asian CR community.

I don't think it's necessarily wrong to westernize Asian names. Asian subbers sometimes do the same to western movies and dramas. There is some logic to doing that - mainly to make it more understandable to those western viewers who are not so well acquainted with Asian cultures and customs. However, even though I understand the reasoning behind it, I do find it annoying. I prefer to have the names left as they are.

I agree.

People shouldn't get their mind influenced with random Japanese anyway. It's not like people actually understand a crap what they're talking in Korean / Japanese Drama / Anime without the subs.
