This FAQ was formulated from a composite of questions/statements I have seen through email, PM and forum posts. Hopefully this will clear the air on the situation.

If you feel any additional topics should be covered here, feel free to post about it but do not use this thread to argue and be crude about it.

----------------------------------------------

Did Crunchyroll "steal" Naruto and Bleach from Dattebayo?
In order for Crunchyroll to have stolen something from Dattebayo, we would have had to forcibly taken it away and they would have had to have ownership of the material. So no, Crunchyroll did not steal Naruto or Bleach from Dattebayo since they dropped these projects of their own free will without any direct action or coersion from Crunchyroll and they do not own the distribution rights to any of the series they distribute, which makes it illegal to download from them.

Are VIZ Media's subtitles for Bleach as good as Dattebayo's?
The answer to this depends on your personal preference. Many like Dattebayo's subtitles due to the addition of swear words, how they keep the Japanese honorifics intact and how some other Japanese words are left untranslated. VIZ Media's subtitles do not contain swear words, mainly because there are few swear words in the Japanese language and merely ways of saying things in a rude manner. But I just heard that VIZ's subtitles will keep the original Japanese attack names and include Japanese honorifics (not sure if this is just for Simulcast episodes or if it will include previous catalog episodes) . So, strictly from a translation point of view, VIZ Media's subtitles are most likely going to be comparable to Dattebayo's and not "terrible" as many seem to think.

Can Crunchyroll provide subtitles from Dattebayo for Naruto and/or Bleach?
This is something that is up to our Publishers. We currently have no control over this and there are no loopholes that will allow this to be done. So no, we can not provide alternate subtitles since we are only allowed to offer VIZ Media's subtitles at this time. If we are ever given permission to provide subtitles for them, we would provide an alternative which contains most of the elements that people have come to like from Dattebayo's fansubs. We already have a system set up to provide multiple/optional subtitles but we need permission from our Publishers in order to utilize it.

Why aren't there subtitles available for the Opening and Ending theme songs?
Usually there are rights issues with Japanese lyrics rights holders, so we can't provide English translations for those portions even though we would like to provide them.

How is the video quality of Naruto and Bleach on Crunchyroll?
Normal (non-paying) users have access to our SD quality videos which is decent quality but you'll see some pixelation. Premium Members paying users have access to our 480P and 720P videos where available, which are great quality. You can sample our 480P and 720P qualities by following this link:
http://www.crunchyroll.com/hd_demo?720p=1

Why isn't Bleach available in my region?
Region Restrictions are determined by our Publishers and is something we have no control over. More often than not, multiple broadcast companies own the distribution rights to a series for different regions which may block us from gaining the rights to host our videos for the people in their region. If any regions open up, we'll be sure to secure the rights for them and give the people residing there access to Bleach.

Will all of the episodes of Bleach be released on the site?
As of now, that has not been determined but what I can say for certain is that we are working on the rights to stream the back catalog. We may not immediately have the rights to provide all of the episodes here since it may take some time for distribution rights to become available for a chunk of episodes in the middle of the series. When we have more solid information, we'll inform everyone of which episodes will be available and when.

How much of the revenue, generated through Crunchyroll, goes back to the Creators/Publishers?
I can not disclose actual numbers but the majority of the money gained is distributed amongst our partners, based on the collective number of hours our viewers watched their videos.

Will a direct download option be provided for Bleach?
Unfortunately we do not have the right to offer Direct Downloads for the majority of the shows we have available to stream, which includes Bleach. We used to have a Direct Download service for the limited number of series we had available but this was unpopular and discontinued as of March 31st, 2010. So no, we will not be able to provide the option to download Bleach to your computer in order to watch it offline.

Why can't fansub watchers and supporters of legal distribution, agree?
It's all just an opinion based on circumstances. Many people, who prefer fansubs over legal streaming, like that it's freely provided in high quality (don't need to wait 7 days for lower video quality), like that they can download the video to their computer, don't like streaming videos, don't have enough bandwidth to stream, don't care about the legalities and/or like to have a choice with what subtitles to use. Many of the supporters of legal streaming do so because they think supporting the industry as it evolves is the right thing to do, have the bandwidth to stream our videos, like the ease of access, have a good enough computer to play the videos in browser and/or do not have any problem with the official subtitles. Each side will do what they feel is right and you can't argue with what a person firmly believes is right.

Why can't fansub watchers and supporters of legal distribution, agree?
- download vs streaming
- old in the subtitle world vs new
- over all quality
- professional typesetting vs yellow text on video
- taking money for cheap quality streaming
- Crunchyroll releases faster than subbers...
- Ruining our fun to fansub, which is a real issue. (E.g. What should we sub this season? We cant do "that" show cuz' Crunchyroll will do it! )
- Some even think flashy karaoke is one of the disagreements, but is think karaoke only needs to be there and be as simplest as possible.
- Crunchyroll getting all shows = Fansubbing changing or Death to fansub. Let me explain this one... Soon fansubbers will become rippers of crunchy and edit+typeset+encode to a better raw. OR Fansubber will just vanish.

I could think of more, but this should do it.
Don't get me wrong I support legal anime distribution but they have to rethink somehow the way they do it.

This is turning into a drama....what does CR have to do with fansubbing? DB wants to support "legal" means of watching anime so they dropped Bleach and before that Naruto, were they forced to? no, were other fansubbing groups forced not to sub some shows? no, could they still continue to sub Naruto/Bleach/etc? yes, is the subbing world dead because a group choses to drop a project? no, could fansubbing groups continue their "work" even while there are legal means to watch those certain series but thir fans prefer their certain way of subbing? YES.

Stop with the drama people, if fansubbng groups want to keep their fans and they feel that their work is appreciated they'll continue, nothing changes "legally" when something they do gets streamed on several legal websites, what they do is still illegal and CR has nothing to do with them, if they just rip from CR then you know that those guys are really good at what they do....and you should not continue to watch their "subs".

Subbing groups aren't going anywhere and they won't die, if they cease to function is because they wanted to not because they were forced to by other websites that have absolutely nothing to do with them.

Thanks for the information I guess, but wouldn't this be appropriate as a stickied thread? And did you make this thread partially because that new member said you're stealing shows?

I'd love for it to be translated as Soul Reaper because it sounds bada$$ but I personally don't watch anime to get the bada$$ feeling and part of the reason is because it helps with the language, it's easier to learn some basic words while you watch something that you like, fansubbing groups translate in a very informal way some go as far as turning them into slang, we all need to remember or...find out, that Japanese people are very veeeeeery polite even their informal way of talking could be considered strict for Europeans, Americans, etc and imo their words shouldn't be butchered because some people like swearing (baka is more like fool or stupid at most but some translate it like idiot...etc and this is just basic some go way too far with other words) or because they want to feel awesome watching them, you're watching the anime, not the sub, the sub is there to make you understand what's happening.

Sometimes I wonder if..western kids would love Pokemon for example if they keep the anime as it is but put some nonsensical sub over it that revolves around a DBZ fight something with lots of blood and action....

I have no problem with the change, I'm just a bit sad because my region (France) isn't listed for where Bleach will be available. I realise it's not a CR issue, but is there any precedent for when or how titles have become available in additional regions in the past?

Breaking News: Just heard that VIZ's subtitles will actually use the original Japanese Attack names and will be using Japanese honorifics!

.... updating FAQ.

Really sad news for me!
It´s like i thought: Germany is not in the list and Dattbayo will drop the show!

Thank you CR for shutting down one of my favorite shows!

I know it´s not your fault, but there is nobody else to blame right now...

Who subs and how they sub videos is always going to be a point of debate. I know CR can not change subs because of legal issues.

Maybe CR could change the streaming video player however. Make it able to include fan subs that play with the streaming video, but are not part of it.

We could then still support the industry by paying to watch, but also see our preferred subs or subs in additional languages.

Best of both worlds maybe.

Originally Naruto Shippuden was not available world wide since some regions were blocked but, within the month, we gained worldwide rights. Technically 3 countries are still blocked unless you are an Anime Member. These were blocked due other broadcasting rights that were given out in certain areas. So it's still possible for more regions to open up further down the road, just not for launch.

Fair enough, thanks for the reply!
