Is it just me, or does anyone else like the names of the attacks put into parenthesis, translated at the top of the screen? This was one of the little things that DB did that I really enjoyed.
Now that it's missing, I'm a bit disappointed. |

DB stopped doing that a while ago,
And it doesn't take that much effort to go to Bleach Wiki (or w/e wiki related to that anime) to find out what they mean... |

Yeah, because they began substituting the original literal attack names for what the attack translates to in English. With Viz, they are leaving in the original attack names, with but aren't translating their meaning to English. In my opinion, Viz is only taking half a step into one of two paths. 1.) Leave in the original names of the attacks, but in small font, at the top of the screen in parenthesis, translate their meaning. 2.) Substitute the original names of sword releases/attacks for their English translation in all dialog. i.e. Instead of Renji screaming out 'Hikōtsu Taihō', he'll scream out Baboon Bone Cannon. I hope you understand what I'm saying here. I preferred when DB was performing #1, even though they eventually transitioned into #2. The transition from #1 to #2 was performed pretty seamlessly, so if done correctly there is no problem with it, and eventually people will become accustomed. All I'm really trying to say, is that if Viz continues to choose the first method, that they should either go all the way and add in the English translation, or simply abandon that method and substitute all original attack/release names to their translated counterparts. |

I'd like to see all of the attacks and powers translated. Otherwise it seems like they're being made by an amateur fansubber leaving all of their favorite names untranslated because they like them, instead of trying to make things understandable and accessible.

After all the DB fanboys were going on and on about how its an objective fact that translating attacks and powers was zOMFG VIZMEDIA RUINING the subtitles. There just is no pleasing everybody on matters of taste. |

I just don't see the point in leaving powers and proper names untranslated because there's simply no reason to. |

Sorry I have not found the quote yet, it must be somewhere after the 50th page in the announcement thread. Another 80 or so pages to skim through to find it, then. |

If people don't want it "ruined" by having it translated then they should learn Japanese. In the meantime the rest of us don't feel like hunting down wikis that may or may not be reliable in order to find out wtf the name means. |

I don't care if they do it either way, method 1 or method 2. I just want them to do either fully and not just go half way, leaving some of us either scratching their head or running off to a wiki. |

I've mostly been watching fansubs up until now, so I'm not sure how Viz actually did it before. Either way I've gotten used to the idea of translating everything. (Anime localizations aren't really fast enough for my tastes and I'm impatient, but I don't mind paying for a fast, legal translation, so eh.) |

Maybe it is just me but you guys may want to count your blessings and be happy they did this. As a Gundam fan I will be honest and say that if I had never heard the proper translation of the infamous shining finger my life would probably be better off. My point is that some attack names when translated just sound stupid.

My point is that some attack names when translated just sound stupid. That's part of the point I think. If some attack power was given a name that was meant to be humorous but it was left untranslated, it's a lot harder to figure out whether or not it's supposed to be comical if you leave it alone instead of just translating it, which can completely change the tone of a show. (And G Gundam was never really meant to be taken seriously, I mean Neo Holland's windmill gundam? LOL.) |
