I just want to know what kind of Otaku are you, I've seen mostly people who wears weird hats (ones with ears, and etc), weird fashion, wears big backpacks, tucked in shirts, long striped sleeves and they have a weird sense when it comes to socializing. They go above the normal conversation meter (or whatever that is that I'm talking about). I've seen them mostly in Anime clubs, cons and some video clips about Akiharaba.

Well, I'm different

I wear normal clothes, have a "cool" hairstyle, have a lot of collections in my room (posters, figurines, manga, studio ghibli anime dvds, too expensive lol), does not talk Otaku-ish but I keep up with conversations with other people. But I love Anime and Manga and I'd love to go to Akihabara someday. I'm also a hardcore gamer, I'm not good talking to random girl strangers. Since I wear differently, do you think I look like a wannabe? even though I've watched 250+ diff titles of Anime,Read 10+ types of manga (Ecchi and Normal ones), Played Galge, Eroge (Dating Sim games) watched all Studio Ghibli movies.

So.. what kind are you?

not an Otaku? don't love Anime/manga? doesn't care at all? Does not care about this thread? Does not know how to read this quote? then GTFO this thread if you just gonna bash us, we'll just ignore you

I like tomboy-ish kind of girls as long as their not les or hardcore les, if you know what I mean =P
I can't draw also, I can't hook up with girls but I can talk to them. I'm not good at socializing with other people in reality but I'm kinda ok when chatting. I lived most of my life infront of my pc (I thank Jesus and God for giving me a fast metabolism, if it wasn't for that I'd probably end up fat =p)

Let's get this straight, first of all.

Otaku means someone who is absolutely *obsessed* with anime. Thus you are talking about how much of an anime fan you are, occassional watcher being the lowest degree and otaku being the highest.

I've seen quite a bit anime and manga, and I like it, but I don't cosplay and I don't go around spouting wapanese, kthanxbai.

I'd like to cosplay someday~ When I have the money to waste lol, its not like I'd cosplay Niwa-kun (DN Angels) every time I go to a con lol~

I sometimes blurt out Nihonggo (Japanese words) because I have a Japanese Aunt, Japanese friends and Anime-obsessed friends even though I could talk to them normally, I'd use words like Nande, Doshite, Genki, etc

Well if you actually are Japanese, I don't see why you shouldn't speak it. And casual cosplay is fine.

But I feel bad for those people who don't realize how annoying they're being by pretending they're Jap and buying merchandise like woah. < Used to be there.

this is a bit off topic but no, im not a les, in fact, thinking that stuff freks me out, i just wanted to try short hair and since i wear glasses, some people called me harry potter when i got my hair shortened about a year back.........
but since it's much longer and almost below my shoulders, i say it looks good now :D
as for types of otaku, my brother is completely obsessed with naruto, trying to analyze each character, cosplay as kakshi and itachi...........
not wanting to be like him is probably why i don't want to be a complete otaku so much

I'm not actually Japanese, though I'm learning it for a special reason, I love this girl who's half Japanese and currently living in Japan (my friend/classmate in RL =) ) l I wanted to know how to speak the language so I can communicate with her friends/family add the fact that when I go to Comiket I can communicate with other people also and I have a lot of friends who live there already and Japanese Relatives.

The list is endless. There can be as Haruhi Suzumiya put it "mystery novel otakus" or whatever. It is self-defined.

I don't consider myself an "otaku", but i do watch and read a great deal of anime and manga. I own some DVDs and manga volumes as well. I have a cousin that claims everybody who likes anime is an otaku, and it took aLOT of time defining otakuism to her.

Wow... you guys don't really seem otaku at all to me ;

I consider myself a poor, closet otaku... because I don't buy expensive anime-related stuffs, books, dvds, etc (tho if you had the money to buy a lot of anime/manga, I doubt you'd be on crunchyroll to begin with :D). However, I do save up to go to small cons with my friends and cosplay in clothes we make ourselves and buy/make cheap plushies... I'm obsessed with bento box lunches and try to imitate them in cheap containers... I used to use wapanese but not anymore. And I like to sing badly in Japanese ahaha.

However, if you didn't know me or anything about anime/manga I could easily pass for your normal everyday student who likes to be active and have fun and who is obsessed with color, art, and philosophical things... and who will occassionally break out into anime-like hyperness and facial expressions.

Since it's hard to judge your own otaku-ness, I thought it'd be cool if anyone else replying could take this quiz too: http://www.theotaku.com/quizzes/view/256/what_kind_of_otaku_are_you%3F. My result was chibi otaku
