People, ECCHI doesn't always mean CRAP, so stop hating. Or better yet, PEOPLE, DO NOT GENERALIZE.

Echi aspects are hit or miss with me.

I sometimes find full frontal nudity less appealing than a panty shot. For example. Queen's Blade. I'm actually interested in the story. but the suggestive perils the heroine keeps getting involved in... really do nothing for me. Nor do I find the lady who wears a live snake as a thong at All, attractive, erotic... whatever.

On the other hand, the campy, James Bond-esque adventures of the original 'Agent Aika' some 10+ years ago were amusing and perhaps a tad titilating to my then decade younger self. I was amused by the miniskirts that every female character wore as well as the odd camera angles. It had several moments that made me laugh. and i thought the Aika herself was kinda hot.

I think the worst kind of Ecchi is censored ecchi. Panty shots may or not be annoying depending on the rest of the components of the show but floating two dimensional teddy bear heads or cutsey bats or signs with smartass slogans about "no panties for you" are More so.

If you're going to censor out ecchiness, either redraw the anime with longer, physics defying skirts... or don't bother showing it at all.

Exception: hiding Shinji Ikari's thingy behind a package of Toothpicks in Evangelion was gold. Mind that was more like the classic convienient whisp of steam or the physics defying skirt than the sort of censorship I was decrying above.

(edit, noticed a couple of spelling errors.)

i'll pretty much watch anything if the characters are interesting enough it doesn't matter if its ecchi or not. however i don't understand why many ecchi titles always go with the tentacle groping and i agree with papagolfwhiskey that for censoring there's no need for the signs just find some other way to censor the image. the mosaic thing bugs me too either don't draw that scene and leave it up to the imagination of the viewer or leave it as drawn because its too distracting to me as a viewer

I don't generalize. Ecchi=/=crap.

Ecchi titles can actually be pretty good if there is a good story and character development going on. Agent Aika is one of my favorite series because it was fun to watch. The only ecchi titles I can't stand are the ones that don't seem to be going anywhere and are rather pointless to watch.

AYE! I know ur reasons...there are a lot of good ecchi animes out there...Mahou Sensei Negima...To-Love-Ru...Love Hina...Kampfer...Seto no Hanayome...RosarioXvampire...it's just so mean to generalize...and I read all kinds of mangas/watch all kinds of anime EXCEPT Shounen Ai and Yaoi...and I daresay, ecchi mangas/animes no matter if shounen, shoujo, seinen, there all AWESOME

There are TONS of ecchi animes that have shallow a storyline and their main magnetic effect is the ecchi in it.. I honestly hate it and that's why i USUALLY go over those series, of coarse there are quite a few enjoyable ecchi animes from the new ones, Ichiban ushiro no daimaou is a great example, the ecchi in it doesn't disturb the story too much and is brief, but there are tons of animes where the story sucks and ecchi (Well moe is also a thing that pulls people to watch, it doesn't have to be ecchi. ) is practically after every 2 minutes.. And I hate characters that don't have realistic thinking..
Great examples (HUGE SPOILER WARNING!) :
Beating to death dokoru-chan.. Seriously everything the anime is about is a girl who just smashes a guys face every time he sees her naked body parts... SHE FUCKING TAKES A GUYS FACE OFF JUST CAUSE '' Kyaaa it's embarrasing'' .. I WILL FUCKING PULL HER FACE OUT, LETS SEE HOW SHE FEELS ! .. Fuck it... Any guy would just show her his middle finger after she does shit like that for the first time..
Kjubiki Unbalanced... This is a moe anime, shallow storyline, the comedy there isn't anything too funny and it's the normal usual thing.. Boring.. It was one of the main animes the otakus in 'genshiken' talked about..
Mahoromatic: It is one of the great examples for ecchi animes that have UNIQUE SETTINGS.. Nothing too great, but fools a lot people into thinking that it has a GOOD STORYLINE . A female android who becomes a maid while escaping from her previous life and than she meets a guy who she falls in love with and suddenly there were the old people who want her to become the war android she was before.. It's unique but the way it's drawn and the feeling it gives, is repulsive...
Lyrical nanaoh (Or what ever..) ... Is one of the most 'popular' series with the anime otakus while it doesn't have ANYTHING to offer with it's storyline, characters or anything.. Ooohh it does have something to offer actually and it's, ecchi..
Sekirei.. Another unique storyline, the characters AREN'T UNIQUE and it has a heavy load of ecchiness in it.. Though i don't like the storyline at all and all the 'bouncing' has made me feel pissed off...
Air Gear.. Well this is a great anime with interesting characters, unique storyline, great fights and decent amount of ecchiness, but a big load of pervertedness.. Well i noticed, that sadly the artist tries to show naked skin everywhere where possible and a lot of those ''clothes'' aren't too nice... Otherwise a great anime..
Seto no Hanayome... The only moe and ecchi anime I liked cause of it's unique humor and likable main character that from time to time stays for himself.. Well in overall, quite a few unique and likable characters, unique storyline, quite funny and unique humor..
Gantz... I think no one could call this a ecchi anime. Cause the characters are made to be realistical.. So desire for sex, love, violence and everything has to be in the mix in a gory anime like that..
Rosario + Vampire.. The amount of ecchiness is decently big (In the manga atleast.. Not so sure about the anime though..).. Storyline is pretty unique, characters aren't too unique, but nothing too bad.. The only thing that is annoying is the helplessness of the main character and how the women in his harem behave with him, it's rather annoying if i may say so..
Well i will bring a conclusion here.. Though i didn't bring out all the ecchi animes cause there are WAY TO MANY OF THEM.. I brought out some of the most popular ones and my point is, that most of the ecchi animes AREN'T GOOD, in both story- and character-wise.. So I think people have reason enough to generalize ecchi animes as bad animes.... 60%~75% of the ecchi animes are pure crap.. -.-
Keep away from the series if you see pictures like..

Or pictures of little girls who you think 'look cute'..

Or a series that has a female character looking like that.

Or something like that..

If people ignore pictures that resemble or look like that than you will have a higher chance of finding a anime that isn't too ecchi...

I found Agent Aika to be somewhat annoying, because I thought I was going to go snow blind.

Seriously, what is with the "all panties must be white" fetish?

The latest installment of the Ikki Tousen franchise had the same problem. I suspect the fixation on white makes the panty flashes more unrealistic and obvious, and thus disruptive. All I know for certain, however, is that panty flashes alone don't phase me, but make them all white and it gets under my skin.

I agree. Either just show, don't do it, or use the more subtle shadow/light/steam censoring. The blatant "buy the DVD" censorship disrupts the visual flow.

Nice, I throw an Aye up there. Most of the "Echi" shows are pretty damn funny. Ladies vs. Butler was for the most part hilarious.

I'm sorry I can't agree with your conclusion, your assertion that this anime or that anime is both ecchi and crap is based on your opinion. Thus, it proves nothing.

I also disagree with you on some specifics I'm really unsure what makes the Nanaho franchise ecchi. or what makes you think it has nothing to offer aside from ecchi-ness. Ecchi was certainly not what -I- took from that show. Which I happened to like.

on the other hand I have to agree with you on not finding certain oversized breasts or tacky outfits particularly attractive. I've encountered a few anime that aren't particularly Ecchi otherwise that have that annoying trait.

It's funny you mention Rosario + vampire and Ichiban ... Those two in particular are ones that come to mind when thinking of clumsy censorship also, I donno maybe I'm old but constant panty shots as the characters try to get into bed with the hero or get jealous because they think another girl is doing so are... welll ...trite.

I think at the time, I found it pretty unique. oddly Najica blitz tactics didn't do it for me at all and it was done by the same crowd. I do have to agree with the 'snowblind' part but ... I don't know.. it seemed like part of the humour to me. Aika only worked on campy humour level for me. I think also it was some of my first exposure to some of the strange interpersonal relationships and behaviours that anime characters do in the background.

Lyirical nanaho franchise had 9-11 year olds in rather perverted (Well you may have a different thought on what is a perverted cloth or not.. But my idea is that it's made to be watched and ogled by others..) clothes saving the world .... The whole point of the series is for people to watch it for it's girls, cause it doesn't have anything to offer story-wise.. Well it is actually more like a 'moe' anime..

Ichiban ushiro no daimaou has a interesting story, rather interesting characters and there isn't too much ecchi in it aswell and when there is, those moments are brief and don't take up too much time.... Point is that the Ecchi in it is just purely a brief fan service, which doesn't really disturb others who aren't into ecchi. Though if you see a censored spot, it may really pull some attention cause of the colorfulness of the icon (I don't really have that problem.)..

As i said, I can't say anything about Rosario + Vampire the anime... All my opinions are on the first few episodes and the manga chapters i have red.. I can say that the characters and the story in Rosario + Vampire are both unique... Though i really can't say anything about the ecchi part, the first few episodes were full of ecchi and I didn't like it.. So i can't really judge how heavy the ecchi in it is..

The animes i posted up WEREN'T MEANT TO BE BAD ECCHI ANIMES (Well the bad ones were there cause i wanted the people to know what a lot of those ecchi animes are missing..)... I just introduced a few ecchi animes and gave a basic view of it what you might expect from them.. The point of my last post was to actually say that there ARE good ecchi animes, but as i mentioned.. 60%~70% of the animes are bad, which is over half of them...So generalizing them into crap isn't that bad.. Though thinking that ALL ecchi animes are crap is a bit too much..

tbh as long as storys good and the characters dont annoy me ill watch it

I don't hate on them, but from my experience I'd agree with how the title of this thread is worded: "ECCHI doesn't always mean CRAP." The vast majority of what I saw, and dropped or forced myself to finish, was crap. The only charming one I liked was Ichiban no Ushiro no Daimaou.
