Why do girls say "Like" all the time?

its not only girls that say "like" all the time, its present at both genders, however many movies have made this phrase a signature of the "stuck-up" persons.
In teen movies/series it is often used by the "bitchy, rich" girls, to make them sound well sorry to say: a bit stupid/funny.

my personal opinion: ask a girl, i don´t think guys can answer this question.

It's better than saying 'um' all the time.

i´d actually prefer a girl saying "um" in a conversation.
