I don't know. Most of the girls and the guys I know have just gotten into a habit of saying it.
My English teacher got so sick of it, that she made a rule that every time you add an unnecessary 'like' in your sentence, you give her ten cents.
She didn't really charge us, but it caused most of my classmates, (including me :sweatingbullets:) to stop doing it.

A lot of people do it, not just girls. I once counted the number of times my friend said 'like' during a conversation and tallied up 23 or something.
