Sakura Kinomoto
Posted 6/22/10
Sakura Kinomoto from Clamp's Cardcaptor Sakura, and the variation(s) of her in Tsubasa...

Why is Sakura so popular?

I like her too, but I don't understand her enormous popularity. To me, she seems extremely Mary-Sueish quite a few times, and almost perfect. She's cute, kind, nice, charming....She basically has no bad traits at all.

Yet, no one ever calls her a Mary-Sue, instead calling other characters that are near perfect like Tohru Honda from Fruits Basket, or Belldandy from Ah! MY Goddess and hate on them. Sakura is pretty similar in that sense (and so, now that I think about it, are many of Clamp's characters.)

She gets a bit annoying for me with her always sweet and kind mannerisms, and her universal liked personality. What excludes Sakura from the common Mary-Sue's of anime and manga? Or do you think she is over-rated?

What are your opinions on Sakura Kinomoto?

She's so sweet and nice and she does have bad traits....she TRUSTS TOO MUCH....she's naive and also she's scared easily....

All in all she's still adorable....

Cardcaptor Sakura is the revolution of shoujo manga-anime, i think =P
the anime is just marvelous, it's a bit old story (1999) it could make me cry even if i watch it now. sakura is so sweet, innocent, cute, and everything. =333

I agree, she does have her flaws. Not only is she extremely trusting and easily scared, she is completely thick and oblivious to other people's feelings for her. But she is so young and adorable!

Anime Characters who bare the "Mary Sue"-Stamp are usually the Author's pet and "perfect" because of that.
But usually when this common super-adorable-smart-kind-and strong characters gets into the story
they seem "Fake".
Why? They have no flaws, always have a smile on their faces and they always have a solution in the most extreme situations.
And at a certain point in the story, their 'kind and gentle words' completely lost their meaning and feeling.

Kinomoto Sakura is indeed a kind, sweet and cute character, but she still has her flaws.
She is the kind of girl that sucks you completely in the situation with her troubled face, of makes you cry whenever she does.

She's not really perfect or she would have done everything right, and I mean she's cute and innocent, those other characters u mentioned are like already in high school so its kinda annoying, but if u consider her age and her situations, then well, she's just cute, u can't help but get a little teary when she's sad or something.

I don't think Sakura is a Mary Sue. She has to work hard to overcome the challenges in her life, and when her powers aren't enough, she has to reach further to try to patch up those flaws.
