Big distracting message
Posted 6/24/10
So I've got the premium membership, right? But you see it fit to put a HUGE distracting message in the middle of the episode, thanking me for watching it here. If you really want to thank me, don't interrupt my shit. It comes up in the middle of a slowmo fall with no sound, just this big, honking, annoying crappy ass intrusion.

I pay to enjoy and support anime, don't keep doing this, kthx.

I cancelled my subscription because of the message.

Such dire and contemptuous treatment of subscribers! I was on the last hour of my free trial, so I've not lost anything but the emotional attachment I was supposed to have had today

For someone who pines to lose themselves in Naruto for a good 20 minutes every week, this was an unwanted reality break. I feel as if I haven't watched the episode; like a night without REM sleep. A subscription killer if ever.

This is, of course, on top of last week where CR failed to encode the subs.

Where is your QC procedure? Or don't you want to broadcast the stark truth: you don't care, you're just a licensee bitch who pimps vendor supplied subs? I'm sure that if you check the fine print, advertising like you did - in a way which broke the envelopment of the viewer - is a severable event because it harms the brand.

I'm happy in the knowledge that the only people I'm hurting by my decision not to subscribe are CR... CR should never have been given exclusive distribution rights.

tldr version: Fuck you guys I'm seriously pissed and I'm taking my money with me.

Sorry about that, I'm not sure why that message was added but I'll have this looked into and try to at least come up with a compromise that appeases everyone.

I totally agree. I was really disturbed and disappointed by this message. It totally destroys all tension and emotion of the episode.

I've been a paying subscriber with mixed feelings for several months now but I'm really disappointed by this new "feature". I will see if they keep it in the next episode and will also cancel if they do.

On this issue there is no compromise. I don't need to know that I'm on crunchyroll watching anime, and I certainly don't need a big message ruining the episode.

Well a compromise was made and the message now shows up during the opening and ending themes. Also, if it ever shows up during the actual episode content, it will be show only in ways that are not obnoxious as was present in the first implementation of this (ie the annoying 2 minute long message). So now the message only shows up for a few seconds at a time.

Always remember. CR doesn't care about you. They care about your money. Deal with it, and watch the episodes.

You know what then? Fuck you guys. A few seconds at a time is a few seconds too much. You can bet your ass I'm going back to downloading fansubs. Better quality, better translations, and no bullshit.

Very mature, compromises are a part of life and how things are changed. I had the initial implementation of this removed since I agree that it was terrible. Now it's been replaced with a much less annoying method which I personally don't think is annoying at all so I do not see what the problem is. Though, things are still not finalized and are subject to change further judging by user input and other factors but we will be much more careful now to present it in ways that are not annoying to people.

If I didn't care, nothing would have been changed. So yes, resort to swearing at me for trying to help you out but it may make sense to not complain next time if you are not willing to compromise or provide constructive feedback. We value constructive user input and have made many direct changes to the site that have followed what users have requested. Feedback that is not constructive and makes little sense, will be ignored.

Edit: Also, I never said we had no control over this, nor did I imply it. We have full control over that message and it's just there for anti-piracy purposes so that more people are exposed to Crunchyroll and understand that there are legal alternatives to watching the video. Whether they choose to watch it legally or illegally is still up to them.

If you are still upset, please re-watch episode 166 and tell us exactly what you find annoying about the new position/times that the messages show up at (timestamps are 02:38 and 20:05, I believe).

What I find annoying is the fact that you implemented them in the first place. You guys had full control, and yet in your finite wisdom, decided to slap it in the middle of the episode, and only after the backlash do you decide to alter it. Poor judgment on your part. And yes, I still do find the new locations/times annoying, because I don't want them there in the first place.

Also, I'm willing to bet that a large majority of those downloading fansubs are aware of crunchyroll receiving the sole distribution rights, especially after it was announced on a major fansubbing site as to why they'd be dropping Naruto. Some choose to download illegally. Others, such as myself, made a good faith effort to support the people making the anime. What are we rewarded with? Large blocks of text to "combat piracy."

Congratulations, in your efforts to combat piracy, you drove one more person back to it.

Many people that watch Naruto, on illegal streaming sites, don't know about legal alternatives. If they're downloading via bittorrent, then yea, they probably already know. Good for them.

In the end, I think you are just looking for a reason to go back to piracy so there's nothing we can do to stop you but, for those who remain, I am ensuring that this matter will be handled a lot more delicately in the future and may not even be permanent. We'll just have to see how things go.

The new implementation of a short, small message during op/end is ok for me.

I doubt that the message will deter anyone from using a fansub, though. If I were no subscriber and would have seen the huge previous message I would have been like "wow, I'm glad I didn't pay money for this". It makes me wonder if the people who decided on and implemented this are anime fans like we are.

I think you are wrong about ehorte just looking for an excuse for piracy. I don't know him but I'm sure most of the subscribers are here out of principle and because they want to support the industry, not because they are to stupid to use bittorrent. If he would prefer pirating, he wouldn't be here in the first place.

I noticed the message in this week's episode of Naruto, but it didn't bother me that much. I kinda just saw and though "oh, that's new".

That said, I do think it was a bit intrusive as I think a few people would mistake it for some sort of subbing, which is why they would make the effort to read it. You could argue that it's good marketing in that sense, but I don't think people who actually pay for a subscription should have to see that sort of message.
