And?

It's not that I'm not sympathetic to the girl nor angered at the cop nor dismayed that the jury cannot give the girl justice...

But all you've done is through up couple of links. Have you no opinions suggestions, on how to fix the problem? Do you propose something?

If I walked up to you and plunked a rotten apple down in front of you and then just stared at you with my arms folded as if inviting you to comment....

you'd probably say something like "It's a rotten apple? What do you want me to do about?"

Or maybe even "Get that Nasty thing off my clean counter"

and so with your post I say:

And?

I propose reactivity of local militia, as a first step in curbing the problem. NOT in the sense to violently go after abusive cops as the one depicted but to hold them accountable under court-martial proceedings.

Amendment 5 of Bill of Rights.
"No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia"

Under this, the abusive cop in the video would not have had "hung jury's" or for that matter have had to have the girl wait so long for compensation for wrongful action.

Under the court-martial proceeding in the constitutional-militia-structure, the beating occurs on Sunday, the charges or brought up on Monday, an investigation on Tuesday, the court-martial on Wednesday, the appeals of Thursday, sentencing on Friday, then execution of provided sentence on Saturday.
Another-words, all the comforts of civil trails for cops like that guy, go flying out the window for acts of violence as such.

It is because cops have the best of both worlds... Executive authority and power, and the right to civil courts in cases of abuse, whereas under normal conditions it would be held by court-martial proceedings by his local militia- Sargent, Captain or whomever would be available to handle the issue then.
Additionally for actions as the beating shown, their would be no "Paid-Administrative Leave of Absence" from the city treasury, from hard earned money, rather he would be jailed, or at the very least confined to his house, and removed from his duties until the conflict could be resolved.

I'd further recommend to educate the people serving in juries, that criminal activity is still criminal, even if you happen to wear a costume with a shiny trinket on your chest.
The fact that people mostly don't make the connection that police can and do make horrible actions, and even escalate conflicts, is a serious problem, that they seem to have forgotten the phrase "Equality under the law is paramount."
Anyone here knows quite well what would happen to themselves if they had did this exact same thing, but make contradictory decisions when a costumed-thug does the exact same thing.

So in summery...
Reactivate local militias to handle rouge elements in executive government, through court-martial.
Educate people the principle of "Equality under the Law."

Now see! that's something to talk about.

Don't think it would work in my country. we have a different constitution new minted just under 30 years ago. It was born of negotiations and modern politics, not a revolution. Certainly though After G-20 here in Toronto I'd have loved to see the local army regiments arresting Cheif Tony Blair and his goons. Maybe he wouldn't looked so smug as he failed to answer all the questions the reporters had for him this past week.

Why was she in a holding cell at the age of 15 anyway? Though it's terrible that a police officer would do something like that, I still have trouble feeling sympathy for a girl who got herself into that situation in the first place.

You been busted for something taking your shoe off by hand is and handing to the jerk would have been wise kick them out the door you get what you ask for. To bad there was no sound to go with it plus what went on in the hallway. Keeping your mouth shut is wise and not making any sudden movements also smart. You do not want the prick to have a reason to go off on you.

Maybe she was at a legal protest that the cops decided to bust up anyway. It's not like that ever happens (/sarcasm)
