Sounds like you need to go back and watch the end again... I was disappointed when the credits rolled too.. but there's just a tiny bit more after the credits that may change your mind too.

Time is weird in the after life....

If otonashi showed up last... how did and how long was Kaneade's life after getting his heart. or did otonashi stay lost in the general afterlife for a real long time.... before finding his way to Kaneade.

A good point, as she was there well before him. I get the impression that the school was more of a gathering place outside of time.

Regarding her comment about him not having a heart, if their afterlife bodies were affected by what happened to them after they died, wouldn't they all look more like decaying zombies?

Even if one argued that he was just brain dead, and his body was still alive when the heart was removed for transplant, this would mean anything that happened before the person died would affect their afterlife body, which would mean anyone that died a violent death would bear the results of that in the afterlife.

It looks like this is a significant plot hole.

that's not quite true

what about Yui and Iwasawa? didn't they each suffer some type of injury that left them stuck in bed for the remainer of their lives? wouldn't that carry over?

my thoughts on how kanade got there first is that this is similar to the sci-fi series pilot called Riverworld, people who died ended up in Riverworld but the people were from different time periods past, present, and future so it would make sense that the afterlife exists on a plain free from the concept of time

i think this was the creator of angel beats' way of saying that a piece of Otonashi's soul resides in Kanade that's why he doesn't have a heart then again if he's a donor then how many other organs is he missing?

They would've taken a most of his usable organs whether Kanade got them or not. She just knows he doesn't have a heart because she has it. She said she got lost along the way, so was she lost, or dead?

that is the question we will never know of kanade's life what happened after receiving that heart nor how she got there first

actually that scene confused me because from what kanade said it sounded like she wasn't actually dead more like she was comatose or something after receiving the heart because her spirit wanted to thank whoever gave her the chance to live, yet they meet up at the end so i didn't get it was it like a reincarnation or did it just not make sense and the dead guy some how came back and met the girl who was alive because of his heart?

i think it was that she just eventually died. Since his spirit was wandering too(i believe it was dont remember what they exactly said in what words) doesnt mean he had to go before her

im sure everyone just reincarnated im sure is what happened. else how would she meet him.

i remember the wolfs rain ending everything just reset

also the first eva movie stuff seemed to reset as well and these new series of movies are just the after reset(kowaru saying something about making shinji happy this time i believe)

I guess I can provide my observation. This is how it goes...

Otonashi was the programmer and Kanade was with him when they first appeared together. Because Otonashi have already fulfill his life, he don't remember his previous life. At that time, the two met and fell in love but Kanade disappeared. My theory, Kanade was temporary dead when she got a heart transplant with Otonashi's heart. Hoping for her return, he place himself as a NPC, created a timer for him to reawaken when Kanade return, and reboot the world. Time passed and Kanade reappears but Otonashi wasn't reawaken yet. Kanade wonders aimlessly, searching for something she is missing and forgets after a long period of time. I think timer wasn't really accurate and reawaken him longer than expected. And now, you know the rest of the story.

that makes perfect sense! referring to the programmer they mentioned in one of the episodes and that he had to wait for his "love"
and also all that confusing stuff about the love that wasn't there and also that he did not choose to become god

Your explanation for your first point is fine with me. That certainly sounds like it coulda happened. Your 2nd guess....well...I guess it coulda happened....just that I would never have thought Kanade was in the afterlife....got rezzed into the real world...then got back into the afterlife again. But hey i dont know.

And Kanade's regret thing. She mighta wanted him to say it to her since they were both gona dissapear and they didnt know if they were going to see each other again. But yes I do agree how it was strange how Kanade didnt say anything that would indicate that she was feeling the same way about Otanoshi. But hey who knows.

At this point in time. I think any guess on what happened in this show is worth while xD

I think that was because saying "Thank you" was her only regret
and she wanted to disappear but fulfill that and to do that all she did was to reply thank you because of the great amount of appreciation she wanted to express

ya i thought they re incarnated or something as it was the only logical explanation it's just the way kanade was talking it sounded like she wasn't dead yet and she had to go back so when i saw the scene i was like ok so she's still alive then i saw otonashi and i was like w8 a sec that's not right which is why i was confused,

i didn't really like how they did the whole reincarnation thing in wolfs rain i guess it was proper it just didn't sit right with me, and eva died for me with the last 2 eps which they tried to fix and failed at again so i just stopped trusting eva
