Kraftwerk is VERY well known among people who like so called "electronic" music and were highly influential. Just because the kids at school don't know them doesn't mean they're completely unheard of.
For me I'd have to say that for being old and influential Can, Captain Beefheart, Diamanda Galas, and Suicide are unfairly overlooked. Zeitgeist is great as well and there are several local bands I support
