Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, although I did meet a kid who had heard of them. (His uncle is a fan, apparently.) I also kind of dig Columbia, which is this very Oasis-esque band from Vancouver.

Not completely unknown, but kinda new so not super popular. Here goes:
XLR8

An 8-member boyband from the Philippines, hence the name XLR8. All members are "full" Filipino save for Hideaki Torio (bottom right in pic), whose father is Japanese. I'm not sure if they're really "unknown" since I've started to see Korean comments on their videos, so it seems they're getting a little bit of international attention. This is their newest single, "It's Time to XLR8."

These guys are definitely unknown but they're the only new V-pop band I've been liking. Understandable though since V-pop is also pretty new and there's only a few bands out there. Also one of the guys is pretty cute! ^^ Here's their song "Ay yo."

RPM

They're a mix-gender pop group from the Philippines. They're good as far as their music goes. Not too crazy about the girls but the guys have some pretty good rap skills and man can they dance! I like that they're a mix-gender group though. It gives them a cool sound that's really unique. :3 This is my favorite song of their's, called "Play in the Rain." It really gets stuck in yer head!

That's all I can think of for now but trust me I'll probably post more.

One of my favorite emo/screamo bands of all time is Finch. They only had one mainstream rock radio hit in 2003, "What it is to Burn" and they haven't been that successful since. Not many people have heard of Finch but they're certainly one of the best emo bands of this decade. ^_^

He's written some great stuff, but I think my favorite song of his is 'Fresh Blood', which is surprising because most of his stuff is pretty mellow. Plus, most of these bands are unheard of for a reason, haha! Anyway, it doesn't really matter what bands one person has heard of because it's all relative, people have vastly diverging tastes and a person chooses to discover specific bands over others. Music, like anime is a path that has many trails and crossroads.

you are very wise my friend
I do love all of the Eels stuff, Fresh Blood is very different from his usual stuff, more powerful and raw
well the whole album that song is from, Hombre Lobo, is based on the concept of lust and longing
as you said, its the same with anime
there are some shows i like my friends haven't heard of
